I think heroes would have been the perfect song for the couple in 1984. It works perfectly, because in the book they were trying to beat them, though nothing could drive them away, for a short time they could experience "love." and so forth. i'm sure it has nothing to do with 1984, but that's what i always think of.
by the way, your piccy does not work.
Hell has all the good bands anyway.

"Nothing will keep us together"
(The lyrics were largely written "on the microphone", so no wonder they do not make full sense).

It could go along with the mantra "live one day at a time"
It could also be a really bad come-on line by David

Because it's an affair. They only have the one day together, hence their time together is stolen time ("we could steal time just for one day").
You, you can be mean And I, I'll drink all the time 'Cause we're lovers and that is a fact.
At first glance this sounds like it's describing a rather destructive relationship between the two of them, but in my opinion, it's describing their relationships back with their respective partners.
We're nothing and nothing will help us Maybe we're lying, then you better not stay...
I could be a genius if I just put my mind to it.

That is the more accurate observation.

Well, maybe it's because they are common people and you can't be special forever. By this extraordinary moment of him being king etc. they are heroes, but just for one day.

In reply to:

I always thought of this as a projection of what their future would be like if they stayed together. After this, Bowie asks We can be Heroes, for ever and ever: What d'you say? suggesting that he is asking his lover whether she would want that kind of future.

because heroes are never eternel: Freddie Mercury, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan or Ziggy Stardust... "Nothing will keep us together" means that the link between an artist and his audience won't stay forever...i think
