The real Aladdin Sane
|
|
|
One must not overlook the deliberate pun contained in the title, "Aladdin Sane."
Aladdin truly has a mental disorder: he is possibly the most isolated character in Bowie's oeuvre.
This is a person who can't make contact with the world around him.
Do passionate bright young things fill him with joy, comfort and company? No. Beautiful women tear him apart because he is unable to connect with them.
That is why the question is repeated throughout the song, Whose love will make Aladdin sane?
The tragic answer is that no one will love Aladdin. All he has are dead roses and sad remains.
The music and lyrics combine to make a stunning portrait of autism.

Yes, revidescent, the lightning bolt on Aladdin's face does denote schizophrenia. This, according to Bowie himself. That is a more apt description of Aladdin's malady. Thanks

Who'll love a lad insane?
Nobody loves insane lads
Millions weep a fountain, just in case of sunrize
Millions sympathize with his pain, because they want to appear merciful. Don't fake it! They feign humanity in a desperate atte,pt to save their own souls.
From the societal point of view, people like Aladdin, are futile.Mentally disabled people have always been dashed out, just look at the term mentally defectiveAladdin has no other choice but to alienate himself from the world, because he doesn't need the world's brine and because he feels that the world doesn't need him.
Are mentally disabled people really defective, useless?Well in this day and age, where *normal* people resolve issues with warfare and flagellation, they surely are.Yet the protagonist is certain that A Lad Insane will make it.
The sunrise symbolizes enlightenment,an evolution of the mind. The protagonist is incorporating the idea that one day the earth will exorcise the bigoted from her orbit, leaving only the extra sensitive divine creatures and those who wept for them(only a few million out of 7 Billion),to built the new order.
And by the way, does anybody know what Terry Jones' illness was?

He was a paranoid schizophrenic. He ended up killing himself because of the paranoia and depression

Exactly. It happend in 1985 and Bowie did not attend the funeral, as he thought (probably he was absolutely right) it would turn into a media happening. Terry's suicide was inspiration for Bowie's song Jump They Say. Judging by the video, Terry must have commited suicide by jumping from a tall building?

Nope, threw himself on railtracks. My mother´s uncle died same way, I´ve heard that people who get ranover by a train are one of the ugliest possible sights that you could ever witnes... Mom´s uncle lost his head and the rest of the corpse was pretty beaten up also from what I´ve heard.
