They'll Never Clone Ya

Although I've heard this song countless times, I never really paid any attention to the lines:

They'll never clone you
You're always first down the line
When you're a boy

I wonder what it means. Actually, what really got me thinking about it was this morning, as I was working around my house, I thought it said:

They're gonna clone you
You'll always pass down the line
When you're a boy

But anyway, I realized my error but I am still wondering what "you're always first down the line" means.

I think Bowie used a cut up technique when doing the lyrics on Lodger, which means many of the lines on first glance seem odd, such as this one "first down the line". But if i was to hazard a guess id say that it means the following....

The thing to imagine is a queue.
The male is regarded by society as having an advantage, having first pickings "Your always first". But Bowie is saying that in reality, the male is not getting better treatment at all, but worse...."Down the line".

I think it's more about male individuality and ability being reveared where as with women its more 'whats outside thats counts'-; there is more of a media set ideal/image to adhere to which restricts women expressing themselves as individuals.. this is hard to explain.. men aren't usually categorised into archtypes straight away but women are.

What, you mean...."You're always first on the line"!!!???

Yes, because this song is one i almost never listen to, i too assumed it "first down the line". But in interpreting that, i think it means, your always the one who has to put his neck out, as the stereotypically stronger sex, men are expected to risk more than women esp in violent situations (or so it was back then).

I think boys will be the first to be cloned. (as opposed to girls)

If it were "First DOWN the line" , i would assume that he means first down the line to get married, after all, the man DOES come out before the woman, right?

Maybe "First ON the line" .... the line being the line of fire = war. They didnt have many if any women in the army back in the seventies.

Andy! Can I have a cup of coffee? ..... And a drummer?

I always assumed it meant that as a boy you consider yourself tops, the best etc... as one does when you are young.

Time brings with it doubt.

I thought the song was against male chauvinism- so that 'You're always first on the line' wasn't sarcastic but showing that despite all efforts made it is still thought to be a man's world, hence boys are first on the line for benefits.

I had such a steady diet of riot control gas that I became a junkie, & I still get nostalgic for it on slow nights.
