Re: Word on a Wing new [re: Siddhartha Gautama o]

DB said in VH-1 Storytellers, that "Word On A Wing" was a cry for help when he was so drugabused in L.A.

I've always seen the song as his most religous one and I'm quite sure that it is about God. I think you can connect it with "Station To Station" where he sings about his drug journey somehow and then see "Word On A Wing" as a desperate cry for salvation.

Well, but when you only look at the lyrics alone they could also be about a woman.

By the way...is your signature a Spanish text? There are a few mistakes in it .

Just because I believe don't mean I don't think as well

Re: Word on a Wing new [re: Siddhartha Gautama o]

I think it is about belief in God. Somewhere I read that when Bowie had the worst cocaine crisis back in 1976, his friend/manager, lawer??? (don't really remember) gave him a crusifix. And he also told that this was the turning point. However he might say copletely other things in other interviews (it's Bowie!), so not very sure about it.

On the other hand I guess Bowie believed in God at least in some way. He has said that he rejects any kind of ORGANIZED religion, but he preferes one-to-one relationship with good. So, Word on a Wing seems to be a prayer

All in the same time, lol . At least for a moment: his name is Michael Lippman, and he's been 1st, his lawyer (Bowie called him when he decided to sue Mainman and DeFries), so he became Bowie's friend, then his manager (when DeFries was over), Bowie even lived in his house for a while. Lippman said that his wife and Bowie used to talk till very late at night, and it was after playing in The Man Who Fell To Earth that the Lippman gave the crucifix to Bowie, as after filming this film, he thought about God, belief and all that... Bowie felt he was "born again". And well, after there were problems between the two (Bowie even sued Lippman because he took more than his 10%), but that's another story.

The song now: seeing the "Lord, Lord, I kneel and offer you...", it's obvious that it's before all about God. I thought recently that the "Sweet name" part might be about a person too, this song could be a cry for help not only addressed to God, but also to people. But anyways, in 1976 (see here), he said it was an "hymn".

The advantage of being clever is that you can play the fool, while the contrary is impossible (Woody Allen)
