The Loneliest Guy

A lot of people tend to think of this as just a whiny "feel my pain" song. I think they're missing the point (though they do have a point). Bowie is in character (Bowie has always been about artful artifice), and the reason he is so lonely is that he is, in fact, the ONLY guy left. The details of what happened are left sketchy, but it is obviously of an apocalyptic nature.
Or was that already obvious? Bah, I'm tired of typing.

No, it wasn't obvious, and I strongly disagree. The Loneliest Guy is lonely (or at least seemingly he is) because he has no friends in real life. His entire life is happening inside the internet. And the song just sucks big apples.

The worst thing about loneliest guy is that it reminds me of a moment when Jethro Tull hit an absolute rockbottom: "Punch my name and in case you wonder, iŽll be yours, yours dot com..." We need a law that prohibits songs about old men and their affection towards computers.
Give me your hate and do as the loving heathen do

I dunno, the only line that has anything to do with computers is the "pictures on my hard drive" bit (which, I'll admit, is pretty terrible). And do you honestly think he'd think he's "the luckiest guy in the world" just because he has a computer? Why are the "clouds green and low"? It's the apocalypse, I tells ya.

We need a law that prohibits all lyrics that mention things connected to computers.
And Grey_Nihilist, I admit that there is a point to your interpretation...

Aargh. You've been there too? I wouldn't call it their absolute rock bottom, but still I agree with you. I have yet to hear a song about computers on the internet that isn't apalling.

The Computer World album can be an exception to that rule.

Hmm... I haven't thought of the song like that, but if it could be interpreted that way (which I'm not sure about yet) the narrator could be Snowman from the novel Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood! Hey! That's a cool idea So, if you need to find out what happened before the song, just read book!
Day after day they take some brain away...
