NIN and Bowie vids....
|
|
|
this has probably been mentioned, but here goes anyway....
Late the other night i was watching the Nine Inch Nails video on tv for 'closer', and i noticed quite a few similarities with the Heart's filthy lesson' video. The first thing was the use of colour - lots of blacks, yellow, browns, dusty ambers.. Then the very strong 'art and murder' theme, with jars of strange things, pale people, body parts, stuff like that. im sure both used a large skull, too, like from a bull or something. I understand that the style of both songs is quite similar, and am aware tht Reznor and Bowie have worked together, but i was just wondering if there are any connections, or if anyone else noticed these similarities??

And Strangers When We Meet, too. However, as far as I'm aware, they were conceived separately by different directors. Also, if you watch the video for Dead Man Walking, you'll notice a bald woman wearing a blindfold which comes directly from the Closer video.

Even if by different directors, didn't the NIN video for Closer predate Bowie's videos from 1.Outside? Or was it the other way around. I though Reznor's vid cam out first. Am I right?

NIN's album The Downward Spiral, and the Closer single were released in 1994.
1.Outside was 1995.

As I thought. Bowie was the copy cat this time around.

Hardly. All the nonlinear-gothic-drama-hypercycle-videos looked that way that year.

Bowie was still a copy cat, though. Just because everyone else was doing it too is no excuse.
