Well, that's hardly the point. If you ax me, if you've seen one nonlinear-gothic-drama-hypercycle-video, you've seen them all.

No, the point is that nonlinear-gothic-drama-hypercycle-videos are a one trick pony. Only so much can be done. Kind of like Fantasy Island. It doesn't matter that Debbie Renolds' fantasy about being a saloon owner in the old west in the first season was before Rosemary Clooney's similar fantasy in the third. Clooney's was still more original.
And don't bother bringing up Johnny Guitar. We all know that was Joan Crawford's lesbian movie. Different thing altogether.

yes, but i like the bowie video more. simply because there are elements which are some kind of "plot" while closer is just a bunch of brilliant disturbing images (which get slightly boring towards the end). and i can't remember any other bowie video that does not copy the look of its time.

Are you kidding? Ashes to Ashes alone should make you eat your words. At the time there was _nothing_ out there like it. As for the seventies vids, I am too young to remember most of them, but I haven't seen too much out there to match, say, Look Back in Anger, or even Boys Keep Swinging for that matter.

look at any other video and you will have the same video look. and ashes to ashes - well - play around with a vectorscope and you will have the effect while calibrating a video recorder. i am sure something like that has been done before. there is not a lot creativity needed for that effect, really.
and look back in anger in fact looks like the usual bbc production of its time.

We're are talking music videos here, not BBC productions. Besides I'm not concerned with the technical brilliance of the clip, but rather the sheer artistic genius of it. As easy as it may have been to do, no one else had done it. Not in a music video. There was was nothing else like it at the time; nothing with half its scope, nothing so strange and so well suited to the song. It was mesmerising.
