Well, my bf dragged me to the local video store the other night to rent Seven. While he was perusing the stacks of VHSs, I wandered over to the DVD racks and into the "Musicals" section.
Needless to say, I ran across the DVD release of Absolute Beginners. And although I was given much ribbing from my better half, I rented it. He didn't have to watch it anyway.
I just finished it a little while ago...and let me say, this just proves to me that if street gangs would learn choreography instead of actually fighting, fewer people would get hurt. Look at West Side Story, for instance.
Anyway, tremendous music in the film (although I still can't get over the characters' tendency to burst into dance). David really isn't in much of it I noticed sadly, but he's quite an interesting addition to the film. What is he doing with his speaking voice? Goodness! At the same time as I thought it was really weird, I found it fascinating.
Three things really piqued my interest with this film: -The sets-the recreated Soho especially had this intentionally fake feel to them, almost a sensation of forced perspective -The choreography-I'm not a dancer. But I do admire people who can dance. And I think Bowie put himself up front with the professional dancers with the "That's Motivation" sequence. -Lastly, Colin-I found it kind of interesting how much Eddie O'Connell looks like Bowie. At least to me.
Anyway, that's enough of me. I'm a horribly uneducated fan, I'm afraid. And I'm stupid. Back to the Ghetto with me.

Nice that you liked Absolute Beginners. I watched it on tv some time ago and I thought it was utter rubbish! It didn't have a plot, and the dancing and singing just got to my nerves (ok, I'm not a big fan of musicals...) I still love the song Absolute Beginners, though. But this is just my oppinion...

Oh, it's definitely plotless.
But most musicals are.
I used to totally hate musicals, but since I spent so much time backstage at them in high school I began to develop an appreciation.
The dancing does tend to get obnoxious.

Saw it once--after BUYING, not renting , the DVD. Didn't like it much at all. David tap dancing? wtf? I do like the song, though.

Has anyone read the novel? I found out that it was originally a novel a few weeks ago and, from what I gather, it's generally held in considerably higher esteem than the film. I intend to read it eventually. . .

So the movie is actually based on that? I guess that just proves again that most good novels never become good movies.

Bowie himself worked in advertising briefly after leaving school (and hated it), and he said that his boss had a mid-Atlantic tone of voice, a combination of English and American, and that's how he wanted Vendice Partners to sound. Well....at least I' m sure that's how he tried to make it sound.
