The topic of the thesis was David Bowie's Outside: The Creation of a Liminoid Space as a Metaphor for Pre-Millenial Society. and it was done by Nicholas Greco at the School of Art, Drama & Music at McMaster University.

I recommend starting with Chapter 2 (it is very good read). Chapter 1 is not as Bowie specific.

Chapter 2 includes a lyrical analysis of The Hearts Flithy Lesson and Strangers When We Meet, a musical analysis of The Motel and other delights.

Very fascinating piece of work. I particularly find his musical interpretation of The Motel interesting, although, I don't play an instrument nor do I have a knowledge of music theory, so a good part of that section goes right over my head.

On the side: Perhaps this thread would have been better placed in the Interpretation forum?

Yeah, it's a bit of music theorey that also happens to incorporate the subject we love (Bowie). I've always wanted someone to write a book like that. Eric Tamm did one for Eno called His Music and the Vertical Colour of Sound but there is no real equivalent for Bowie. The parts on Bowie, he certainly speaks very highly of.
