Lennon quotations in DB songs
|
|
|
I thought of adding this post to 'Workers have struck for fame' thread, but eventually saw a new topic in it. I can think of at least two direct Lennon quotations in DB songs. They are: 1) 'Love is the answer' in Shake It - taken from 'Mind Games' and 2) 'I believe in Beatles' in Afraid - an antithesis to 'I don't believe in Beatles' sung on 'Plastic Ono Band' album. Can someone add to this list or identify any other people's citations in Bowie?

"I heard the news today, oh boy" - Bowie's 'Young Americans' and The Beatles 'Day In the Life'.
later, Chris...

Does the title Never Let Me Down count? A lot of critics seem to think it's a reference to Don't Let Me Down.
Bring back Bowie's moustache!

That "put a bullet in my brain" lyric was written in the 60s, though, not just prior to Lennon's death in 1980. It comes from the song "Tired of My Life," the precursor to "It's No Game." So . . . if David was prognosticating, he was predicting shit WAY in advance.

You know what? I'm not convinced about tired Of My Life being written much before it was demoed in 1970 on the bootleg we all know. So, Visconti said in 1980 that 'it's no game' was based on 'the first song he ever wrote' or 'something he wrote when he was 16', I think he was just over emphasising that it was an old song... and didn't mean it literally, even though it has passed on into folklore.
