Re: We Are The Dead new [re: nekoneko]

"We Are The Dead" has always been one of my favourites.
But if you want to love the song even more, you should read "1984" by Orwell. Suddely the lyrics will make complete sense, and the song will be even more beautiful.

We'll watch the crazy people dance around!

The whole album (which I learned to enjoy further after being carted away by the ministry of love) makes more sense if you read the book.

It's got claws, it's got me, it's got you

I think it's a wonderfull album, and I'm looking forward to reading the book as soon as i find it from the libruary (who says that music isn't civilizing? I never would have even thought of reading 1984 unless it was for Diamond Dogs )

Candidate new [re: nekoneko]

Funny, I was thinking of the album too... don't know what sparked it but I could not get these lines out of my head... they are so chilling.

Well, on the street where you live I could not hold up my head
For I put all I have in another bed
On another floor, in the back of a car
In the cellar of a church with the door ajar
Well, I guess we must be looking for a different kind
But we can't stop trying 'til we break up our minds
'Til the sun drips blood on the seedy young knights
Who press you on the ground while shaking in fright
I guess we could cruise down one more time
With you by my side, it should be fine
We'll buy some drugs and watch a band
Then jump in the river holding hands

God-- that's just devastating (esp. "But we can't stop trying 'til we break up our minds....) to be in that place of mind-- that must be HELL..
It is an amazing album--I think it ranks with Outside.

"Let go of my hand, Ed".

Re: We Are The Dead new [re: neko the lion]

In The lines

"And the streets are full of press men
Bent on getting hung and buried"

Are the "press men" opportunistic rapists in the post apocalyptic world?

Because in the song, Bowie sings

"I looked at you and counted all the times we had laid
Pressing our love through the night
Knowing it's right, knowing it's right"

And in Candidate he sings

"'Til the sun drips blood on the seedy young knights
Who press you on the ground while shaking in fright"

In both these cases "press" means intercourse.

Of course press men could be also referring to reporters. But the part "bent on getting hung", also suggests sex, and "hung and buried" could suggest capital punishment for such individuals.

I havent read 1984 nor do i intend to, so it could be just that having sex is illegal and punishable by death.

Re: We Are The Dead new [re: LaughingGnoome]

I really like your interpretation of the "press men" and although you posted it six months ago, well something kind of hit me today....

Is "the virgin king" in fact one of these "press men"? Perhaps the virgin king is some kind of official deflowerer, with this adding up to people no longer have a say in anything....not even their virginity?

We Are The Dead - Pressmen and all new [re: Adam]

This story is told from the point of view of a 'mutant' (Halloween Jack?) and his lover (The "Locator for the virgin king", who is an "urchin" or street kid). I also believe that where "we" is used in the song, this usually refers to the 'lovers'.

"Something kind of hit me today
I looked at you and wondered if you saw things my way
People will hold us to blame
It hit me today, it hit me today"

"We're taking it hard all the time
Why don't we pass it by?
Just reply, you've changed your mind
We're fighting with the eyes of the blind
Taking it hard, taking it hard"

To me "Taking It Hard" has a number of possibilities,

One of them is about cannibalism - "why dont we pass it by? (it being one of the "last few corpses...rotting on the slimy thoroughfare") and "We feel that we are paper choking on you nightly" suggesting this to me, along with the song title. Also -> "People will hold us to blame It hit me today, it hit me today", people would hold them to "blame" perhaps if they were eating corpses. Also they could be "fighting" their horror and disgust "with the eyes of the blind" as they are eating. "For you're dancing where the dogs decay, defecating ecstasy" also suggests positive activity "dancing" in a place reeking of death, but having food in their bodies then even defecation is something to be grateful for and celebrated -> "defecating ecstasy".

The other possibility is the harsh realities of their lives (which are destroying their spirits), or sex with Bowie remarking that lovemaking (which is supposed to be tender) has been replaced by something "hard".

In reply to:

Is "the virgin king" in fact one of these "press men"? Perhaps the virgin king is some kind of official deflowerer, with this adding up to people no longer have a say in anything not even their virginity?

"Yet now
We feel that we are paper, choking on you nightly
They tell me "Son, we want you, be elusive, but don't walk far"
For we're breaking in the new boys, deceive your next of kin
For you're dancing where the dogs decay, defecating ecstasy
You're just an ally of the leecher
Locator for the virgin King, but I love you in your fuck-me pumps
And your nimble dress that trails
Oh, dress yourself, my urchin one, for I hear them on the rails
Because of all we've seen, because of all we've said
We are the dead"

Considering...

"You're just an ally of the leecher
Locator for the virgin King"

A leecher is someone who wants something for free, Sweet Thing deals with sex being the most widely peddled commodity on the street. There are two ways to get sex for free and rape is one of them. Although as i will elaborate on more later, i kinda feel the "virgin king" may be sort of a pimp.

"For we're breaking in the new boys, deceive your next of kin
For you're dancing where the dogs decay, defecating ecstasy"

"Breaking in" also could mean 'deflowering', though it also has a dimension not inconsistant with rape (breaking in is invading). "New boys" suggesting virgins. "Deceive your next of kin" could refer to them warning an inititate not to tell anyone about what is going down, secrecy. "Defecating ecstasy" could refer to anal sex. "Where the dogs decay" could hint at a certain location, or could simply be a description of activities which are filthy and depraved. The word "dancing" could mean putting on a performance (and relates well to the description of the songs activities as a "theatre of financiers").

What if its all just a game? Ie in that they are role playing? This seems to be hinted in the following line, particularly by "elusive". Ie pretend that you dont want to be caught.

"They tell me "Son, we want you, be elusive, but don't walk far"

What if its a 'service' of some kind?

"It's a twenty-four hour service, guaranteed to make you tell" and "It's the theater of financiers Count them, fifty 'round a table White and dressed to kill", ie the money men get to determine the nature of the entertainment.

"One thing kind of touched me today
I looked at you and counted all the times we had laid
Pressing our love through the night
Knowing it's right, knowing it's right"

"Now I'm hoping some one will care
Living on the breath of a hope to be shared
Trusting on the sons of our love
That someone will care, someone will care"

"But now
We're today's scrambled creatures, locked in tomorrow's double feature
Heaven's on the pillow, its silence competes with hell
It's a twenty-four hour service, guaranteed to make you tell
And the streets are full of press men
Bent on getting hung and buried
And the legendary curtains are drawn 'round Baby Bankrupt
Who sucks you while you're sleeping
It's the theater of financiers
Count them, fifty 'round a table
White and dressed to kill"

"We're todays scrambled creatures, locked in tomorrows double feature" - confirms that the narrator and his lover are diamond dogs, half dog mutants. "scrambled creatures" could simply mean they are in a coital position. "Heavens on the pillow" - referring to the only pleasure they have, "its silence" means its hollowness, its emptiness. In relation to the idea that it is a service, could this tie in with "theatre of financiers"? , ie the rich white men "dressed to kill" who pay for the pleasure of hunting down and dishonouring the "virgins". But as depraved as it is, in the world of the diamond dogs it is compared to a "theatre"? There is also the possibility that the "theatre of financiers" are interested in more than sex, consider "white and dressed to kill" along with the title of the song and these lyrics..."Oh caress yourself my juicy for my hands have all but withered, oh dress yourself my urchin one for i hear them on the stairs because of all weve seen because of all weve said, we are the dead", ie the financiers like to kill too.

Then the "virgin king" could be like a pimp, paid to locate quarry for the "financiers", and the narrators own lover being one of his employees, paid to find them for him.

The society portrayed in Diamond Dogs is clearly obsessed with sex, the greatest intimacy ("One thing Kind of touched me today" - sounds like a ghouls touch) experienced is the sexual one, and even this is numbed enough that he clinically counts the number of times he has done it "counted all the times we had laid", after all "Heavens on the pillow, its silence competes with hell". "Pressing our love through the night" -> sex is love, love is sex. And this is partially what the chorus is alluding to....

"Because of all we've seen, because of all we've said
We are the dead"

They are deadened and numbed, their innocence is destroyed, they can take pleasure in nothing but sex, they might as well be dead.

"Oh caress yourself, my juicy
For my hands have all but withered
Oh dress yourself my urchin one, for I hear them on the stairs
Because of all we've seen, because of all we've said
We are the dead
We are the dead
We are the dead"

There are parts of this song that could be related to psudo-necrophilia, "Heavens on the pillow, its silence competes with hell" (ie pretending to be dead during sex - "silence"). "Bent on getting hung and buried", and especially "Oh caress yourself, my juicy For my hands have all but withered...".

Though i must conclude by saying that that is the songs message, the lovers are "dead", because their lives are devoid of compassion, hope and freedom, their innocence is gone "baby bankrupt", even sex is an ugly cold dead thing caress yourself my juicy for my hands have all but withered. There are glimpses of hope and reflection in the narrators speech "living on the breath of a hope to be shared" throughout the song, but these are interlocated twice with long reality checks..."but now....".

It really is quite a fantastic twisted little monster this song.

Edit: Upon further thought i am nearly certain it is "Your just an ally of the legion"instead of "Leecher".

Re: We Are The Dead - Pressmen and all new [re: LaughingGnoome]

i think its about tender old fashioned archaic(non existant in that society) lovemaking (heaven on the pillow and silence ) Their kind of love being a intimate private act of individual freedom is forbidden This act is their rebelliion against the oppression of the fascist totalitairian mindcontrolling authorities(hell and the big brainwashing brother watching even their own minds) and allies(the dogs) and society (the already brainwashed and blind)All privacy (pressmen break privacy when they write publicly) and also sex is forbidden, (big brother i think is the virgin king because big brother forbids sex) )their act of love is like to dance where the dogs decay for with what they do they fight them and win in the eyes of themselves, they win back their personal freedom and original personal experience but with the price to loose their lives. The sons of their love are their love children or any offspring of their love perhaps they will care because they feel that the love they originated from is right
One is supposed not to think and question but blindly follow the leader (big brother) and all he wants to put into their brains
(they tell you son we want you be allusive but dont walk far- those are big brothers words -all what he (the protagonist-lover) tells his lover is the competition in his own mind against what they are made to believe by society with what he personally feels/ experiences in this love affair) They be haunted by the dogs from now (i hear them on the stairs)
They are the dead because the act they did will not be tolerated (they will be blamed)and on paper already they have deathpenalty for even thinking outside the prescribed lines .Love between two people is a word that is erased from the human vocabulairy, its non existant
Lovers are non existant too thats also why they are the dead in that kind of society.
