Who is "Without You" about? new

Considering when the song was recorded, I don't think it's about Angie, because didn't they divorce around this time (early 80s)? Yet, when Bowie sings: "You're exactly who I want to be with / Without you / What would I do?" you get the impression he's having someone special (someone real) in mind, but who?

Without drugs.

The divorce was in 1980, although they had been separated since 1977 at least. So definately not about Angie.

Actually the interesting thing is that I've no memory of reading Bowie's sexual relations between the late 70's and 1987 properly dissected anywhere. We've got pretty good accounts of what he did and with whom from other times, but not from this era. I strongly doubt he went without any relationships for a decade.

The lyric of Without You is so vague though that I'm not sure if it's really written about a person. It could be just a run-of-the-mill heterosexual love song Bowie wrote for Let's Dance as a part of his programme for making himself more family-friendly.

Like Dogz suggested it could be drugs. Although Bowie writing such a lyric such a long time after he quit heavy drug use - and before he got completely off them - seems a bit improbable to me.

I remember reading something from around that time and he
said it was about his son, who knows...

Hmm. Actually, I prefer to think of it this way.

Reportedly he was still occasionally doing drugs at the time of NLMD.

If the tabloids from back then are to be believed, this plaintive and fragile ballad from Bowie is directed towards noted society beauty of the time Bella Emberg. A similar theme of vulnerability was explored by Bowie previously on Be My Wife, only this time the object of his heartfelt plea to "share his life" is widely thought to be Hattie Jacques.

During that period, he had at least a short relationship with Geeling Ng from the China Girl video.
