Kooks - All About Bad Parenting or Just Niave?

In reply to:
A trumpet you can blow And a book of rules On what to say to people when they pick on you 'Cause if you stay with us you're gonna be pretty Kookie too
meaning it's ok to laze around playing a brass instrument but if someone tells you what to do refer to an old dog eared book which your dad had which obviously has content which will eventually make you like your dad.
It's amazing Duncan turned out OK considering the advice of his father....

And if you ever have to go to school
surely an education is compulsory.
In reply to:
And if the homework brings you down Then we'll throw it on the fire And take the car downtown
that's disgraceful such a defeatest attitude towards life. Simply throw it in the towel instead of thinking. It's easier to shop than it is to think.
Not to mention that it would lead Duncan to have pyromaniac and materialistic tendencies.

The song has a feeling of "We love you and believe in you, no matter what". Everything will turn out right no matter what. Look at your dad, he's not strong, he's not an educated man and he's not doing that bad either... All you really need is to be loved and you need a surrounding in which you are supported in any thing you want to do even if that's not what people generally belief is good for you...
I hope I've made my point clear enough..

Is 'Kooks' really cryptic enough for interpretation though, Brian? Hardly challenging is it?
What are you doing next, 'Uncle Arthur'?

'Kooks' is beautiful. I know it's written for his son, but it's open to other interpretations, too - this might be sad, but I think of it as me and my girl's song: "will you stay, and I love a story, if you stay, you won;'t be sorry, 'cos we believe in you"
all of us are in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars

Kooks is absolutely bloody awful, one of the many right proper stinkers on Hunky Dory. Easily in my bottom 10 Bowie tracks.
