From Best to Worst, with star ratings!!!!
Hunky Dory
Ziggy Stardust
Diamond Dogs
Scary Monsters
Station to Station
The Man Who Sold The World
1. Outside
"Heroes"
Low
Aladdin Sane
Lodger
Young Americans
Let's Dance
Earthling
The Buddha Of Suburbia
Pinups
Space Oddity
Black Tie White Noise
Tin Machine II
'hours...'
Tin Machine
Never Let Me Down
Tonight
David Bowie
For some reason, AMG does not have icons for 3 1/2 stars. I would have awarded this to Pin Ups, Space Oddity, Black Tie White Noise and Tin Machine 2. And it may have persuaded me to place an extra half star on the bottom three.

This is very changeable, but if I were slotting them tonight, it'd be something like this. I'm limiting myself to the ones I feel I know really well (i.e. enough to judge them)
1. Heroes 2. Scary Monsters 3. Young Americans 4. Hunky Dory 5. Low 6. Diamond Dogs 6. Aladdin Sane 7. Ziggy Stardust 8. Outside 9. Space Oddity 10. Station to Station 11.Lodger 12. Earthling 13. Let's Dance 14. The Man Who Sold the World 15. Pin Ups 16. hours
No big shockers . . . except that I find YA and Space Oddity to be highly underrated and TMWSTW to be highly overrated.

Interesting to see how well "Heroes" does in tis thread. It usually is not very much talked about on this board, "Low", "Diamond Dogs", "Outside", "Ziggy Stardust" and even "NLMD" seem to get much more attention among the posting TWers. Maybe that is cause the quality of this grand masterpiece is beyond discussion.
My personal list (marks from 1 - 6, need a wider range):
1. Ziggy Stardust 2. Hunky Dory 3. Low 4. Aladdin Sane 5. Diamond Dogs 6. Heroes 7. Station To Station 8. Space Oddity 9. The Man Who Sold The World 10. Scary Monsters 11. Lodger 12. Earthling 13. Buddha Of Suburbia 14. Young Americans 15. Hours 16. Let`s Dance 17.Pin Ups 18. David Bowie 19. BTWN 20. Tin Machine 21. NLMD 22. Outside 23. Tin Machine II

Okay you ask the impossible, but here is my choice as 11.46 21st March 2001 (ask me again tomorrow!)
1. Ziggy Stardust (1972) 2. Diamond Dogs (1974) 3. Hunky Dory (1971) 4. Scary Monsters (1980) 5. Lodger (1979) 6. Space Oddity (1969) 7. Aladdin Sane (1973) 8. Young Americans (1975) 9. David Bowie (1967) 10. The Man Who Sold The World (1970) 11. Low (1977) 12. 1. Outside (1995) 13. "Heroes" (1977) 14. 'Hours...' (1999) 15. Station To Station (1976) 16. Pin Ups (1973) 17. The Buddha Of Suburbia (1993) 18. Let's Dance (1983) 19. Tin Machine (1989) 20. Tonight (1984) 21. Never Let Me Down (1987) 22. Tin Machine II (1991) 23. Earthling (1997) 24. Black Tie White Noise (1993)
What surprises me are the low rankings for Low and heroes - I recognise them for being brilliant records, but they are not the first that I reach for when i want a good dose of Bowie Earthling doesn't do anything for me yet - And I've never got into BTWN, to me its an inferior NLMD!

Y'know, if mister threadstarter twister would ask me again tomorrow, my list would pretty much be the same. The lower rank would differ from time to time, but the top region is quite definite for me. I think that after spending much time on TW the last two years, reading and writing much about various albums, I made my mind up about what my preferences are. I know I like the influences of guitar work (see SM and Earthling in my top) and the brilliance of good lyrics (Hunky Dory and again SM). My list won't change drastically anymore, only for new entries.
I don't think Toy would have ranked very high on my list. I wonder what a new Visconti-Fripp album will do.

This is always a supremely difficult task. As others have stated, the nature of these lists means that they are always subject to change. Mine is no different. However, Low still remains a favourite but I'm somewhat interested to see how much "Heroes" has fallen out of favour from its long time occupation of my second favourite Bowie album.
1. Low 2. Lodger 3. The Man Who Sold The World 4. Station To Station 5. Diamond Dogs 6. Hunky Dory 7. "Heroes" 8. Aladdin Sane 9. Ziggy Stardust 10. Scary Monsters 11. The Buddha of Suburbia 12. 1. I have tried to figure oút whose leading in an olympic fashion: Only top 3 places count, 3 points for place one, 2 for two, one for three. Same number of points, the higher number of top rankings marks the winner. Here are the results so far:
1) Outside 33 2) Low 31 3) Ziggy / Hunky Dory 19 (exactly the same points and rankings) 5) Scary Monsters 19 6) Diamond Dogs 18 7) Heroes 14 8) Station to Station 12 9) Lodger 6 10) Buddha 3 11) Tin Machine II 3 12) The Man Who 2 13) Aladdin / Earthling 1
I did this very quickly so if anyone finds any mistakes, I am sorry. I only counted álbums that got at least one top three position.
And I want to believe In the madness that calls 'now'

Yeah, with "Ziggy Stadust" and "Low" as runners up. And the title in the Olympic Games for real brilliance goes to "Tonight", closely followed by "Never Let Me Down" and the extended rave mix of "Little Drummer Boy".

1. Outside - The Nathan Adler Diaries: A Hyper Cycle [I had high hopes of this one when I bought it and I wasn’t disappointed. Certainly his most sinister work (that I’ve heard, at least) and I like that sort of stuff.] 2. Low [Again, great expectations and no let down. Can’t go wrong with Eno on board.] 3. “Heroes” [Ditto. Only got this one a few days ago, so I still need to wait for a better judgement. I might end up putting it above Low, only because I get a better feel for it.] 4. Earthling [Lots of good songs that I can really get into and just generally cool. Great cover, too.] 5. Lodger [Obviously I don’t think this is as good as his earlier Berlin albums but still pretty good. If it’d had some instrumentals it probably would’ve beaten Earthling.] 6. The Man Who Sold The World [Listening to this at the moment, actually. Some great songs, others more average but better than the average ones on Aladdin Sane.] 7. Aladdin Sane [Big let downs are The Prettiest Star, Let’s Spend The Night Together and The Jean Geanie, especially being flanked by Time and Lady Grinning Soul. Excellent title song, though.] 8. Heathen [Took a few listens to get into it but now I really like it. A Better Future is a bit of a disappointment, though.] 9. Space Oddity [Cygnet Committee, Wild Eyed Boy From Freecloud, Memory Of A Free Festival - what more can I say?] 10. David Bowie [Actually the very first Bowie album I bought. Having the Deram bonus tracks helped.] 11. Station To Station [I’d probably like this one better with the two live tracks but, as it is, it’s pretty good. The odd tracks are the best.] 12. The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars [I’ve always thought this was a bit overrated but it’s not that bad.] 13. ‘Hours…’ [Not everyone’s favourite, I know, but I was just getting into Bowie when this came out so I can’t really hate it. The live tracks from this on the BBC Radio CD are outstanding.] 14. Black Tie White Noise [A few good tracks and I was really into it when I first bought it but I’ve found I don’t listen to it much anymore.] 15. Tin Machine [Again, really used to like it and it does have a few songs I really like but it isn’t Bowie at his best. At least that can be partially excused by his collaboration with others but still…] 16. Labyrinth [Ignoring Trevor Jones’s instrumentals, there’s not much on this but it’s good for what it is. Within You would have to be one of his best songs of that decade - but that’s not a hard achievement considering.] 17. Tonight [I can get into the mood for this one but, really, the only outstanding song is Loving The Alien, until This Is Not America as the first bonus track.] 18. Let’s Dance [Title song isn’t too bad, Criminal World is quite good and I really like Ricochet for its off-beat feeling. A few more songs like that and the ’80s wouldn’t have been too bad. Best track is probably the bonus, though, Under Pressure, hence its position in last place.]
Not included: Hunky Dory [Although I’ve heard most of the tracks on this I don't have the actual album so I thought it better to leave it out completely. I expect it’d rate quite highly, though, possibly replacing Lodger for fifth place.] Pinups [Listened to this a while back but don’t know it well enough to comment. Not top 10 stuff.] Diamond Dogs [A lot of good things are said about this but the only songs from it that I know are Rebel, Rebel - which I don’t really like - and the title track - and I’ve only heard Beck’s version.] Young Americans [Again, only two songs I’ve heard: the title track - which isn’t all that great - and Fame, which is.] Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps) [Ashes To Ashes is definitely one of his best ever songs but I’ve only heard that and Fashion, which is a good song.] Never Let Me Down [Need I even comment?] Tin Machine II [Only know One Shot but it probably wouldn’t rate much higher than the first.] The Buddha Of Suburbia [I’m really curious about this one, especially because of the fact it comes between BTWN and Outside.]

I am also updating mine in accordance with Heathen and a few other of the albums I have purchased since then. The order hasn't changed radically.
1 - Low (1977) 2 - Hunky Dory (1971) 3 - Diamond Dogs (1974) 4 - Scary Monsters (1980) 5 - Ziggy Stardust (1972) 6 - The Man Who Sold the World (1970) 7 - Lodger (1979) 8 - Heathen (2002) 9 - Station to Station (1976) 10 - "Heroes" (1978) 11 - 1.Outside (1995) 12 - Aladdin Sane (1973) 13 - Earthling (1997) 14 - Tin Machine (1989) 15 - Space Oddity (1969) 16 - Hours (1999) 17 - Tin Machine II (1991) 18 - Tonight (1984) 19 - Young Americans (1974) 20 - Let's Dance (1983) 21 - Pin Ups (1973) 22 - Never Let Me Down (1987 23 - Black Tie White Noise (1993)

This is all a bit too hard, and I'm chickening out. On my last list I have Station To Station at #12 and it would be sitting just as comfortably in the top three.
I will say that Heathen has moved up two slots to #23 though. And also...
In reply to:
1. Diamond Dogs (1974) 2. Low (1977) 3. Scary Monsters (1980) 4. Lodger (1979) 5. Aladdin Sane (1973) 6. Hunky Dory (1971) 7. The Man Who Sold The World (1970) 8. Ziggy Stardust (1972) 9. "Heroes" (1977) 10. Space Oddity (1969) 11. Young Americans (1975) 12. Station To Station (1976)
This stands solid as my top twelve, though the order could be re-worked endlessly and I'd never be happy with it.
Ah well. That'll teach me to bite off more than I can chew.
I could be a genius if I just put my mind to it.

I've tried to rank the albums based on my overall enjoyment across the years I've owned them, rather than my current preference. There are, for instance, certain albums in my top 15 that I won't play in the next six months. I don't think any less of them, I just feel I've heard enough for the time being.
As for Heathen, I need more time to accurately rank it. At this stage, I'm thinking number 14, around the Young Americans / Let's Dance vicinity.

Curiously, it's his early seventies albums that make ranking hard for me, more than anything else.
I know in terms of sixties album, I rate Space Oddity much higher than his debut.
The triptych I rate: 1. Low 2. Lodger 3. "Heroes"
The post-Ziggy's death pre-triptych years, I rate: 1. Diamond Dogs 2. Station To Station 3. Young Americans 4. Pin Ups
The solo eighties years as such: 1. Scary Monsters 2. Never Let Me Down 3. Tonight 4. Let's Dance
In terms of Tin Machine I find their debut far more consistent than their follow-up. His early nineties trilogy I'd rank as:
1. 1. Outside 2. The Buddha Of Suburbia 3. Black Tie White Noise
And his modern day albums I'd rank as:
1. Hours 2. Heathen 3. Earthling
But those damned early seventies! The Man Who Sold The World, Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane... just consistently great albums for which ranking is beyond me.
I could be a genius if I just put my mind to it.

[re: Adam]

OK, this is my attempt of the "Adam method" (ranking them from a historical point of view, rather than a current one):
1. "Heroes" 2. StationToStation 3. 1. Outside 4. Aladdin Sane 5. Low 6. Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps) 7. Diamond Dogs (would do much poorer in a present-day ranking) 8. Black Tie White Noise 9. Never Let Me Down 10. Lodger 11. Ziggy Stardust 12. Let's Dance 13. Young Americans 14. The Buddha Of Suburbia (would probably rank in the top 3 in a present-day ranking) 15. Heathen 16. Space Oddity 17. Tonight 18. hours... 19. Tin Machine 20. Earthling 21. The Man Who Sold The World 22. PinUps
23. Hunky Dory
Hunky Dory and PinUps are the only two albums that have given me almost minimal listening satisfaction. The other albums toward the end have had their moments.

Hmm, here we go:
1. Low 2. Diamond Dogs 3. Ziggy Stardust 4. Hours 5. Tonight 6. Aladdin Sane 7. Scary Monsters 8. 1. Outside 9. Never Let Me Down 10. "Heroes" 11. The Man Who Sold The World 12. Space Oddity 13. Lodger 14. Black Tie White Noise 15. The Buddha of Suburbia 16. Let's Dance 17. David Bowie 18. Heathen 19. Station to Station 20. Hunky Dory 21. Pinups 22. Tin Machine 23. Earthling
Something like that. I have periods for each album, so the first one could be also Ziggy, Scary Monsters, Diamond Dogs or Hours, but this is the order in this moment. Some of the albums are so low because I haven't listen to them much (for example Heathen and The Buddhe of Suburbia).

Not as obvious as one might think. As I've been keeping an eye on the subject for a while, and it seems that surprisingly many TWers (myself included) like one or both of those albums.

Alright. After having given this matter far too much thought to be considered a sane person, here we finally are:
1. Diamond Dogs (1974) 2. Aladdin Sane (1973) 3. Station To Station (1976) 4. The Man Who Sold The World (1970) 5. Low (1977) 6. Ziggy Stardust (1972) 7. Lodger (1979) 8. Hunky Dory (1971) 9. "Heroes" (1977) 10. Scary Monsters (1980) 11. 1. Outside (1995) 12. Space Oddity (1969) 13. Young Americans (1975) 14. David Bowie (1967) 15. The Buddha Of Suburbia (1993) 16. Never Let Me Down (1987) 17. Pin Ups (1973) 18. Black Tie White Noise (1993) 19. 'Hours...' (1999) 20. Heathen (2002) 21. Tin Machine (1989) 22. Let's Dance (1983) 23. Tonight (1984) 24. Earthling (1997) 25. Tin Machine II (1991)
If I were being more objective I'd have Tonight right in the bottom slot - but the fact remains I listen to it far more often than either Earthling or Tin Machine II - by quite some stretch the two dustiest Bowie albums I own.
The albums ranked lower than Bowie's debut are the ones I feel are unworthy of carrying the name "David Bowie". I think this is a good rule of the thumb for all artists.
I could be a genius if I just put my mind to it.

In reply to:
Heathen ahead of Diamond Dogs?
Well, not really. They are rather equal to me. In case you haven't noticed, I gave them the same note - 4 and 1/2.
In reply to:
hours ahead of Aladdin Sane?
Obviously. I'm not a big fan of Bowie's early 70's recordings, I rather prefer his more recent stuff or his mid- and late 70's albums. Besides, I have got beautiful memories connected with 'hours...' and it has got a special place in my heart forever. Don't asky why. And, all in all, it's just a good album in my opinion.

And you haven't realized that if two albums have the same note, they're equal or alomst equal?
In reply to:

I put it ahead of Diamond Dogs only because I've been listening to it more than to DD lately. Apart from this fact, I rate those two records very similarily.

Albums frequently in my CD changer: 1. Diamond Dogs 2. Low 3. Outside 4. Heathen (SACD) 5. Earthling
Albums still listened to more often than to the average album. 6. Station To Station 7. Aladdin Sane 8. Scary Monsters 9. Ziggy Stardust
Average albums 10. The Man Who Sold The World 11. Lodger 12. Heroes 13. Hunky Dory 14. Buddha Of Suburbia 15. Reality

Albums which need a special mood to be tried out once more. 18. Space Oddity 19. Hours 20. BTWN 21. Tin Machine II
Albums I avoid (this is more or less a random ranking between them, since it does not matter anyway). 22. NLMD 23. Tin Machine 24 .Pin Ups 25. David Bowie 26. Tonight

Places 1-5 can vary; I guess I should get itunes to provide useage stats, huh? Places 19-25 are nigh unrankable because I hardly ever play them. All the others in between were ranked within their groups according to the length of the word based on my sloppy handwriting.
Near perfection: 1 - Low 2 - Young Americans 3 - The Man Who Sold the World 4 - Station to Station 5 - Diamond Dogs 6 - Lodger 7 - Scary Monsters 8 - Hunky Dory
Thoroughly enjoyable albums with the odd duff track: 9 - Outside 10 - Buddha 11 - Space Oddity 12 - Ziggy 13 - Aladdin 14 - Heroes
A few misfires but good just about outweighs the bad: 15 - BTWN 16 - Let's Dance 17 - Hours 18 - Earthling
Omgwhydidiwastemymoneyonthiscrap: 19 - Heathen 20 - Reality 21 - S/t 1966 22 - Pinups 23 - Tonight 24 - TM 1 25 - NLMD

I guess, in keeping with the tradition, this call for another update to my listing. I must admit that I have listened to hardly any Bowie albums of the late. Which might be good, as recent experiences cannot alter my rankings. For the sake of comparisons, I've followed each album's name with it's position in the last ranking (where applicable, there are three albums in this one I didn't list the last time).
1. Outside (1) 2. "Heroes" (2) 3. Stage (6) 4. Low (forgot to rank this the last time!) 5. Buddha Of Suburbia (10) 6. Station To Station (3) 7. Black Tie White Noise (16) 8. Lodger (7) 9. Earthling (13) 10. Scary Monsters (4) 11. The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust jadda jadda (14) 12. Heathen (12) 13. Aladdin Sane (5) 14. Never Let Me Down (15) 15. Tin Machine II (-) 16. Young Americans (9) 17. Hours (21) 18. Diamond Dogs (8) 19. David Live (11) 20. Tonight (18) 21. Tin Machine (20) 22. Space Oddity (17) 23. Let's Dance (19) 24. Reality (-) 25. Hunky Dory (23) 26. The Man Who Sold The World (24) 27. David Bowie (22) 28. PinUps (25)
The most alarming thing is of course the rise of Hunky Dory (now only fourth from the last). If it keeps this speed up, it will be in the top three around 2030. OK, it actually dropped two places because of the albums added to the list. But it also gained a place from the self-titeled.

With due respect to those that have posted on this thread, I really don't give a monkey's toss as regard to who likes what. Similarly, I can't imagine that anybody would be remotely interested in my own Bowie favourite albums either. However, as I've got nothing else to do at the moment, I've decided to compile an updated list. But in an attempt to generate some modicum of excitement, mainly for myself, but also for those of you actually bothering to read this post, I've decided to present my list in a manner slightly outside the norm.
So, the tricky dilemma of how to spice up an extremely routine post. Taking inspiration from EJ's post, I've struck upon the idea of introducing each and every album by way of using TW's smilie faces (or whatever they're called) that bear a passing resemblence to certain Hollywood stars. For example, I was quite startled with the similarity between this little fella: and Robert De Niro and so I've earmarked him as announcing the winner of the number 6 slot. In a manner befiting a schizophrenic Oscar ceremony, we'd therefore have;
Number 6. "Laaadddiees and Gentlemen. Please give a great big round of applause to the star of Frankenstein, Robeeert De Niiiroooo." [De Niro enters stage left to tumultuous applause] "Thank you" [De Niro opens an empty packet of Gitanes and takes out a small piece of paper] "And the winner of EuropeanCanon's sixth favourite David Bowie album is.......Station To Station" [De Niro exits stage right to even more applause]
Etc, etc. However, after about 30 seconds deliberation in selecting further Hollywood lookalikes, things became rather problematical after Quentin Tarantino [ ] (just tilt your head slightly and squint quite a lot). I was desperately searching for a Sidney Poitier lookalike to play the crucial role of announcer for the No.12 position. I had toyed with the idea of giving the gig to this chap: . Although I detected a certain Mr Tibbs quality in his melancholic little face, I recognised that, ultimately, I was on to a loser with my ambitious plans in that I'd be unable and unwilling to find twentysomething authentic lookalikes from such a restricted gene pool.
After learning my lesson attempting the smart-arse approach, I have inevitably reverted to the lowest common denominator to satisfy my goal. In an effort to please the laydeez (and Strawman) I've decided to post my list of favourite Bowie albums..... naked. But wait! As my mother-in-law is visiting my house at this moment in time, I've decided to spare all our blushes by keeping my G-string leather posing pouch and socks on. Soooo, for the benefit of the laydeez (and Strawman), here is my favourite Bowie songs posted semi-naked. Oh yeah, before I do, I thought I'd introduce a little controversy into your meaningless and unfulfilled lives by posting my compilation in reverse order. And, after struggling rather pathetically, in a final desperate effort to achieve my ill-fated aim of sexing-up this post I've decided to post my list in blood red text (Elliot Gould?).
26. David Bowie 25. Never Let Me Down 24. Tonight 23. Tin Machine 22.
Aw, fuck it. Nope, sorry, can't be arsed.

It has been a long time since I updated this list, so I guess I need to slip in both Heathen and Reality. Let's see how that goes.
What else has changed since I made my first list in March 2002? Well, I guess Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps) doesn't hold the top position any longer. I guess I have listened to it, too often. Also, Hunky Dory is going lower and lower on the list. Any albums going up? Yea', of course, Buddha is now, in my fandom, well established as one of Bowie's most brilliant albums. Back then, I was still reluctant to mark it higher than the TM albums, because I liked the work of Reeves Gabrels so much. Turns out, I like the work of David Bowie even better (you wouldn't say, would you? ). Anyway, here it is, complete with smileys and all.
In relation to last time: U = up, D = down, 'number' = places it went up or down. 'next number' = position last time. Of course, some entries have gone down because of the adding of two new albums. The shiftings in the top regions are more interesting.
U 1 (02) - 01. Low
U 1 (03) - 02. Earthling U 3 (06) - 03. "Heroes" U 1 (05) - 04. Station to Station D 4 (01) - 05. Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps)
new entry 06. Heathen U 6 (13) 07. The Buddha of Suburbia D 1 (07) 08. Aladdin Sane same 09. Lodger D 2 (08) 10. 1. Outside
U 3 (14) 11. Ziggy Stardust new entry 12. Reality D 3 (10) 13. Let's Dance D 10 (04) 14. Hunky Dory same 15. Diamond Dogs

I would be interested in your list, even the updates. This thread is really a blueprint of the TW fanbase. In this thread you can find out what kinda Bowie fan / admirer / whatever you want to call it, someone is. I liked reading the post of some of the TW'ers here I hold in high regard, including you, EuropeanCanon. You can seperate the glammers from the experimenters, the pop-lovers from the soul-lovers. Very intersting list, NoGame.
"Earthling" on two is a brave move and it's good to see someone share my enthusiasm for "Heathen". "Reality" ahead of "Hunky Dory" and "Diamond Dogs" is pretty unique around here as well. But the Tin Machine output beating "TMWSTW" and "Young Americans" is a bit too much I would say.

Ah, but that's where my German friends are wrong, I have been through some insane phases (some say I still am going through them), and I have to admit, I listened to TMWSTW quite a lot then. But, then again, in that phase I turned to power albums like Earthling and craziness to be found on Beauty and the Beast, Joe the Lion (made of irrrooooooooonaaah!!!!) and It's No Game.
But seriously, looking at my list, I think I can conclude I am a music fan more than a lyrics fan. I don't say that Bowie hasn't written outstanding lyrics, but I really go for his music. And there's a lot of music-without-lyrics on the Low and "Heroes" albums, isn't there? Same goes for Earthling, where sometimes I feel Bowie didn't want to write at all. He threw shampoo and TVs at us for Christ's sake.
On the other hand. Becausing of Bowie's limited lyrical contributions of those albums, the things he does say and sing, are all the more touching...

And I've never heard Lodger in its entirety.
The first 19 are are money in my opinion. Low and Diamond Dogs are engaged in a never ending battle for supremacy and, I don't wanna be startin' rumors or nothin', but I overheard Ziggy talkin' some shit about how Scary Monsters is liable to get beat if it keeps mouthin' off. I mean, that's just what I heard. And yesterday I saw Space Oddity in the checkout line at Home Depot with a two by four an' one nail. I said hello, but it just mumbled something about "remodelling" and started counting out the exact change.
