The Worst of David Bowie
|
|
|
Okay, here's an interesting theoretic situation for you. Say David Bowie (or indeed one of his erm... people) decides it's time to release a compilation album of his worst tracks, comprising of 16 tracks what would they be?

It is much harder compiling a Worst of album then a Best of album. Anyway, here is my version (in chronological order):
Macig Dance - The Absolutely Worst of David Bowie
1. Quicksand 2. Fill Your Heart 3. The Bewlay Brothers 4. Hang On To Yourself (Live in Santa Monica 1972) 5. Don't Bring Me Down 6. It's Gonna Be Me 7. Without You 8. Ricochet 9. Shake It 10. Tumble and Twirl 11. I Keep Forgettin' 12. Magic Dance 13. Too Dizzy 14. Baby Can Dance 15. Don't Let Me Down & Down 16. Slip Away

I didn't say it was his worst track... I just thought I would be a good title track . And yes, I know that most people would not agree with my list. As I am already known mainly for my controversial opinions, my list probably does not come as a surprise to anyone. And Slip Away is one of worst songs he has done in a long while.

It is the only song on Heathen which I seldom listen to. It is bad. Closely followed by Everyone Says Hi, but that's not the topic here, is it?
Let's see...In random order
1. Eight Line Poem 2. Kooks 3. Slip Away 4. Thursday's Child 5. Looking For Satellites 6. Never Let Me Down 7. Fame '90 8. Right 9. Tumble And Twirl 10. I Know It's Gonna Happen Someday 11. Amazing 12. Everyone Says Hi 13. The Prettiest Star 14. Black Country Rock 15. Be My Wife 16. Sound And Vision
It should be pointed out that I do not have some albums and therefore don't know all the songs. The list above is a gut response, although I tried to differ between songs that I don't like and songs which are bad. However, it didn't always work.

Part of me hates to do this, 'cause I'm such an over all huge fan, but there are some that just well...shouldn't have even been given the time to have been written down:
1. Fill Your Heart 2. A Better Future 3. The Art Decade 4. Pretty Pink Rose 5. Sorry 6. Amazing (I know this and the previous are Tin Machine songs, but really, Bowie should have had nothing to do with them) 7. Dancing With the Big Boys (egdad! what were him and Iggy thinking?!) 8. Red Sails 9. Amsterdam 10. If I'm Dreaming My Life 11. Small Plot of Land 12. God Knows I'm Good 13. Running Gun Blues 14. We Are Hungry Men 15. Kingdom Come 16. It's Hard to Be A Saint in The City
Not necessarily worest to absolute grotesque, but I really don't like any of these songs and...at the same time I could see myself buying this if someone did release a worest of.

Soul Love is from Ziggy Stardust (as the five first tracks on Stage, they are much better on the album), and Blackout is from "Heroes". The album version is much better, though the song seems to divide people's opinions.
In reply to:

I've Been Waiting For You does not fit into the album, and Shake It is one of the worst things Bowie has ever committed to record.

Judging from her (?) list (and what she said in the post), she does not have that many albums. If you have only Hunky Dory, Stage, Heathen, Aladdin Sane and The Best Of 1969-74, you'd probably select those as the worst songs yourself.

Well, I knew somebody would be upset by my mentioning of Rebel Rebel, I am well aware most people consider it an anthem. However, I have two reasons to hate it: 1) It is the most repetitive song I've ever heard, just TWO chords repeated till you're sick of it! 2) It has been used for a TV commercial of kitchen furniture a few years ago here in Italy, which says it all about how edgy and challenging the song is...
Oh actually I just realised there is a song which is even more boring and THAT one I really cannot possibly stand. Be prepared, for it is another great Bowie classic: The Jean Genie. It's a mediocre version of the Doors' Roadhouse Blues.

No. I could not find anything that is so bad that I would put it on a list as "bad". I don't think there is much point in putting good music down only because there is better as well. The only tracks that I would call Bowie sub-standard on the above mentioned albums are these:
-Velvet Goldmine - Sorrow - A Better Future (only when it stands alone, it's alright in the course of the whole album, somehow)
And again: These tracks are not bad to me. They still beat real bad stuff like "Fame 90" or "Tonight" by far.

Please, enlighten me, Sysiyo - what is so terrible about this song? The vocals are emotive, the lyrics evocative, and the ending the most haunting to ever brace a Bowie album. The song is intelligently written and beautifully performed. So tell me, why is it that you think it's worse than, say, Chilly Down or That's Motivation?
In reply to:
[th0mas] i wonder why [Velvet Goldmine] has not been on the ziggy album.
Because it's about female genitalia, and was deemed too controversial for what was a planned commercial assault. You'll note once he hit the big time with Ziggy he was free to sing about "wanking" and "breasts" on his next album. Also - when the song was released, as the Space Oddity (re-release) B-side in '75 it was done (even mixed) by the record company, behind Bowie's back and without his consent. Perhaps Bowie never rated the song very highly.
I could be a genius if I just put my mind to it.

But the point was not "The Bad Of Bowie", it was the Worst of Bowie.
Exactly. That's why I would not put down any of those tracks from the albums you restricted the choice to. It is "The Worst Of David Bowie" and not "The Worst Of A Few Randomly Collected Bowie Albums" - nothing of his worst is to be found on those albums, in my opinion. I listed those three songs not in order to make a contribution to this thread but to answer your post. And they are not even "bad", only the weakest material in that great bunch of tracks.
In reply to:
(Velvet Goldmine) ... you are kidding! this is for me an essential bowie song of the era. this is pure glam rock
First of all: I am far from disliking that song. But in context of the stuff I had to choose from (see above) it just loses out in my charts. It is too simple in it's fast-slow-fast arrangements, and though the chorus is quite charming the rest of the song slightly fails in producing a real good tune. And I actually dare challenge all those millions who praise it as a Glam Rock classic: It is not a Glam rock song, and certainly no classic. It is way too poppy, not rocking, not shrill or over the top enough to go down as classic Glam in my books. And it wasn't even big in the Glam era itself, was only released as a flip-side to a real non-Glam classic:
(From Bassman's page) Velvet Goldmine (3:08) Released in September 1975 as third track of maxi-single 'Space Oddity', was a 'Hunky Dory' outtake.
The song came back to the light of day when it was re-released on Bowie's "rare" album in 1983 - the fact that it is a "Hunky Dory" outtake plus the title of this compilation might also be seen as a hint to Velvet Goldmine's real influence on the Glam era.
It wasn't really until this dodgy film was named after it that Velvet Goldmine was considered a Glam track.

Yes, and he never makes a mistake twice. His learning process culminating in the wonderfully written, sung, played and produced career highlight "Never Let Me Down". So at least there is one good side to "Hunky Dory".

Well, I think your criticisms are pretty silly (too slow? it's a sad song, not a race horse ), but each to their own.
Back to Velvet Goldmine, a quick flick into The Complete David Bowie reveals it was slated to appear on the Ziggy B-side up to December '71. Bowie spoke of it's removal from the album in a radio interview, saying it was "a lovely tune, but probably a little provocative".

Good question.
I'm trying to think of songs that I strongly dislike, i.e find "offensive" to even consider listening too.
1:New Yorks In Love 2: 5:15 (oooh. controversial! I just think its a dull, plodding drone that goes nowhere at all. sorry!) 3: Tumble And Twirl 4: Shake It (always reminds me of geriatrics jerkily dancing to a synth demo of Lets Dance. don't ask!) 5: Glass Spider (I can't get past the beginning, it pains me!) 6: King Of Stamford Hill (don't say cunt ever again david. Really unconvincing and it doesn't suit you.) 7: Magic Dance (slap that baby make it scream?!!!) 8: Shining Star 9: A Better Future (Shining stars distant cousin. those BELLS!!!) 10: Baby Can't Dance 11: God Knows I'm Good (any song that mentions stewing steak goes downhill thereafter) 12. The Last Thing You Should Do (... is play this song.) 13: Whats Really Happening? (you tell me.) 14: Ian Fish UK Heir 15: Volare 16: Hammerhead

You people are all mad!! Your lists slander my tastes so much. I shall attack them chronologically.
The Man Who Sold the World is one of the most impeccable albums ever made yet somehow Black Country Rock, She Shook Me Cold, Running Gun Blues, and After All were mentioned. Black Country Rock is mediocre I will admit, but the others--especially RGB and After All--are pure gems.
Hunky Dory might have some mediocre tunes, but nothing on it--except possibly Fill Your Heart--actually sucks. Quicksand, Bewlay Brothers, and Kooks are all great. Shame on you.
The Ziggy period: Amsterdam is a great Jacques Brel cover. Waiting For the Man (from Santa Monica 72) is one of the greatest Bowie tunes ever, as is Velvet Goldmine. John I'm Only Dancing and The Jean Genie are also true Bowie classics.
Diamond Dogs: both the title track and Rebel Rebel are fantastic. Anyone who says otherwise is just plain wrong.
Et al.: Across the Universe was one of the highlights of the Young Americans album, probably the 4th best song after the title track, Fame, and Fascination. It's a great Beatles cover and Bowie gives a very passionate vocal.
Sound and Vision was just plain great.
Slip Away is the best song on Heathen. Cactus is an excellent cover and, for me, one of the album's best tracks.
A song that I'm really surprised no one hit on was the most worthless song from the actual Ziggy album--Star. That's the song that stands out in my mind when you ask about Bowie's worst, since it sucked so much in contrast with the rest of the album.

Will someone teach JoeTheLion84 the difference between fact and opinion please. Jeez Louise!
Here is my WORST OF BOWIE:
1. Don't Sit Down 2. London Bye Ta Ta 3. Fill Your Heart 4. Where Have All The Good Times Gone? 5. All The Young Dudes (good song but Bowie's studio version is terrible IMO) 6. John I'm Only Dancing Again 7. What In The World 8. Little Drummer Boy 9. Secret Life Of Arabia 10. African Nite Flite 11. Alabama Song 12. Shake It 13. I Keep Forgetting 14. Magic Dance 15. Too Dizzy 16. Real Cool World 17. Black Tie White Noise 18. Wishful Beginnings 19. The Last Thing You Should Do 20. What's Really Happening 21. A Better Future OK, I don't HATE all these songs. I quite like Secret Life Of Arabia for instance but I wanted to represent each era so I've picked the weakest choice on offer.

haha! Joe, you do have your convictions well in place..... A belief is a belief...... but you can believe 2+2=5 and not be correct. 'Good Music' is what ever the person 'judging' enjoys at the time they listen. To say X is the best while Y is just crap.....well, i know a lot of people who really like Y.
I guess that is why certain people are elected to political office, even if their actions are not in the best interest of the whole.

I am still chuckling at the idea of someone actually releasing an album called The worst of... has noone ever done that?
Taking the worst song from, or associated with, every album, I end up with 1. Come and buy my toys 2. Ching-a-ling (counting this as a space oddity outtake. God knows that there are other candidates) 3. Lightening Frightening 4. Fill your heart 5. Sweet head 6. Let's spend the night together 7. Rosalyn 8. 1984/Dodo (the 1980 Floor show version with the incompetent backing choir) 9. John, I'm only dancing (again) 10. TVC15 (I refuse to take anything from Low) 11. Joe the lion (but not with a light heart) 12. I pray, Olé (nothing from Scary monsters either) 13. Ricochet 14. Dancing with the big boys 15. Magic Dance (I skip NLMD because it's like kicking someone who is lying down) 16. Look back in anger remake 17. Stateside 18. A big hurt (How can I choose? There just has to be two songs representing TMII ) 19. Miracle goodnight 20. Strangers when we meet 21. Wishful beginnings 22. Telling lies (Yes! I hate it more than Looking for sat. because this one pretends to be a cool song and fails miserably) 23. If I'm dreaming my life (especially if we fade in the song starting in the middle) 24. I've been waiting for you (and that one has strong competitors, I tell you)

It's far more interesting to read opinions as to Bowie's worst collection of songs as opposed to his best, which tends to be fairly predictable. To my mind, some of the songs listed on this thread are simply staggering. I'm certain that many singers and groups would give anything to have songs such as The Bewlay Brothers, Quicksand, After All, Be My Wife, Sound And Vision and Blackout in their musical catalogue. Having said all that, though, I suppose my list is largely predictable stuff.
1. I'm Not Losing Sleep 2. Sell Me A Coat 3. We Are Hungry Men 4. Without You 5. God Only Knows 6. Dancing With The Big Boys 7. That's Motivation 8. Chilly Down 9. As The World Falls Down 10. Day In Day Out 11. Shining Star (Makin' My Love) 12. Too Dizzy 13. Stateside 14. Sorry 15. Real Cool World 16. I Feel Free 17. Don't Let Me Down & Down 18. Lucy Can't Dance 19. Looking For Satellites 20. What's Really Happening 21. Tryin' To Get To Heaven 22. Slip Away

I'm not going to necessarily do this in order. Also, by reading all the other posts, I notice that nothing much from the 90s that I HATE (like 7 years in Tibet or Heart's Filthy Lesson) are on these lists. Uh oh. I might get many enemies from what I'm about to write. Please don't get angry!
1) Heart's FIlthy Lesson 2) Never Let me Down 3) Miracle Goodnight 4) Seven Years in Tibet 5) Survive 6) Hallo Spaceboy Good god, is that all I can think of right now? There must be more... 7) WIld is the Wind 8) Dancing in the Street (ok, let me just say right now, that I do NOT hate this song. It's quite good, I just wish Mick Jagger wasn't there to ruin it...) 9)Strangers When we Meet 10) Dead Man Walking
I can feel the waves of loathing already being aimed at me. AHHH!

Some people are just putting generally well-liked Bowie songs that they don't particularly like (but could probably list about 50 other songs that they disliked even more if they were being honest) on their lists just for the sake of trying to be controversial and original.
Examples of such include: Quicksand The Bewlay Brothers Right Be My Wife Sound And Vision Rebel Rebel
I understand that tastes may differ but for god's sakes the guy's released so much shit in his time that songs like Rebel Rebel which, while not all that good, would still never come close to being amongst his worst 16.
But then again, if you only have about 3 Bowie albums you don't have much of a choice, do you?

Oh let me do mine::
1. Alabama Song - this song would do nasty things to you if you were on an acid trip. 2. When The Wind Blows - the vid is stupid. 3. Fill Your Heart - I LIKE it, it just doesn't mean that it's good :P 4. Dreaming my Life - The Ultimate David-is-singing-like-a-wobble board song. Off the Ultimate David-is-singing-like-a-wobble board album 5. It Aint Easy - so he might not have written the song but he loses a star for including it on Ziggy instead of gems like Velvet Goldmine. 6. The Secret Life of Arabia - again, less of the wobble board effect would be good. 7. Rubber Band - uhmmm.......... 8. Shinin' Star (Makin my love) oh my god what a bad song. 9. Shake It 10. Bang Bang 11. African Night Flight 12. Ricochet.
OK so mine only has 12 tracks on it. But they are all bad songs

I love Shadowman. It's been a while since I last listened to Heathen, My edition ends with the song Wood Jackson. It's a pity the Japanese pressing didn't end with Shadowman, that would have given the album a much grander ending. I suppose it doesn't matter much to me though. I only listened to the album for nearly 2 weeks before I was totally sick to death of it. Maybe I'll give it another go in a couple of years time.

Most of your list is similar to mine! But The Last Thing You Should Do is a great track - I love the sardonic/nearly menacing lyric, the loops and the wacky off-key singing (reminiscent of Sons of the Silent Age and even Aladdin in style). Ian Fish UK Heir is a soft target; I think this track works very well as part of the atmospheric BOS album and also on All Saints.

Hmmm...I'm afraid you just don't get Bowie at all. You are over-analysing the chord structures and not letting the music speak to you - paralysis by analysis! On the other hand, perhaps you will get Rebel more, being an analytical sort of person, if you realise the greatness of the guitar riff and, intriguingly for me, that the song is a paean for Julia, from Orwell's 1984. It is most certainly an anthem for a generation, whatever you may think about its chord structures or repetitive nature! As for Genie, Bowie has always acknowledged its blues roots; brilliantly so in the way he played some blues and then segued into Genie at Liverpool in 1997 - my wife, who is not really a Bowie fan, thought this was incredible (and very sexy indeed!); again, so much music has its roots in the blues, so I cannot see that you criticism is valid; Jeez, you could write off the whole of the Stones' back catalogue with that sort of approach! Finally, to appreciate both these songs, you have to put them in context - I'm sure the advert didn't help, but I have to point out that some very great music (classical and pop/rock) is used in adverts these days!

the list of worst db songs probably would just contain 80s and 60s songs, since those decades are his lowest points and nothing he has ever done sounds as dull as Never Let Me Down or Love Me Till Tuesday. So i just list songs that are not really the worst but i can't stand any more because i simply listened to them too often:
1. "Heroes" 2. Quicksand (it's a mistake to put two almost not different versions on one release) 3. Thursday's child (i listened to it twice as often as the remaining songs since it was also on the single with 1917 which i like very much) 4. There are some magnificent songs on this album, like "Ashes To Ashes" or "Fashion", but the whole record is rather... average. I listen to it rarely. I prefer "Let's Dance" if talking about Bowie's works from the 80's. I'm serious! And "Low"? It's my favourite Bowie longplay, together with "1.Outside".

I don't agree with Scary Monsters. You just can't say that it's a bad album because it's bloody good. I don't think I ever come across an album that plays one excellent track after the other. Bowie's vocals are at their peak, amongst other things that make it a brilliant album. You listen to other records that were released in 1980 and then you'll be able to pick out why Bowie's Scary Monsters stands out so much.

I disagree. There are plenty of albums released in 80's which are far better than "Scary Monsters". I'll name few for example: "Closer" by Joy Division, "Let's Dance" by Bowie (I'm very serious!), "Pornography" by The Cure and "Disintegration" by The Cure...

"yes, I think I will experience a light depression around 9:00 Wednesday which will worsen until 13:00, after which I will probably experience an elevation of mood" StrangeDivine

1.Conversation Piece (take your pick of the versions, they're both shit) 2.The Last Thing You Should Do (is listen to this track) 3.African Night Flight (Noise) 4.Slow Burn (Does what it says on the tin) 5.Girls (or the ugliest ones never get a shag) 6.Pallas Athena (I don't want to hear this song - that's a certainty!) 7.Wishful Beginnings (Wishful THINKING!) 8.Telling Lies (yes, that it was any good - also read the note attached to Conversation Piece) 9.Bombers (the acetate should've been bombed) 10.Law (Earthlings On Fire) (again, burn in hell) 11.The Dreamers (dreaming that it's any good - u can tell I'm flagging now) 12.New York's In Love (pre-9/11) 13.Fame '90 (a lesson in how to make a fantastic song into a piece of shit by simply re-re-re-repeating wor-wor-words) 14.'87 and Cry (oh, didn't we?!) 15.The Secret Life Of Arabia (should've stayed secret) 16.South Horizon (the sun should set on this one quickly)

I expect unfounded against Earthling and the traditional Never Let Me Down/'hours...' bashing but Girls and South Horizon? Shame. Now, if it had been Julie and Sex And The Church I would've understood.

Sex And The Church is truly great, though criminally underrated.

Sorry
Bowie might've played on it and provided backing vocals but he really didn't have anything to do with it other than that.

Volare
Are you kidding? Volare is awesome! And so catchy, too! "Volare, oh oh! Somethin-something, oh oh oh! Something-something-something-something-something!"
I'll be appearing LIVE in London May 14th. Sure, it's a David Bowie show but you're all coming to see me. More importantly, you're coming to see me in my awesome new pants.

There are so many upsetting and ridiculous nominations in this thread, I would require a week to begin tearing apart people's choices.
I regret making the link to this in another thread.

I agree, which is why I thought it strange that it wasn't picked on.
