OK, here's the deal: EMI has finally come to their senses and decided to release a set of Bowie rarities to get more cash from the fans. Because they have no idea of what to release, they have asked you to come up with a good tracklisting for them. Because they have decided to open their rather sizeable wallets, you have the access to all material Bowie has ever recorded. However, because EMI also wants to be able to get more money from the fans later on, they are not willing to release everything they've got. Instead, the tracklisting you're asked to make is limited to 30 tracks. No more, no less. The only restriction you have been given about how to select the tracks is that you cannot use tracks that have appeared on an original album release. Hence, all bonus tracks added later are acceptable (as are Too Dizzy and the bonus tracks on the original BTWN release, because they're not available on the present-day releases of these albums). Everything else is at your disposal.

So, your task is to compile the 30 best Bowie rarities you know. Do not pay attention to those hardcore Bowie fans who start complaining about your tracks, thinking that everyone has them because they happen to have them on a limited edition, semi-official, luminous 10" vinyl that was only available in 1981 in South Africa, sold in a certain store only to people who have 11 toes. Just ignore those people.

(I hope that was clear enough, I got a bit carried away. It'll be interesting to see what people select. My selections will be here shortly).

Where does this piece of information come from? If it's true, I'm disappointed. When a Brazilian music paper interviewed Bowie in 1999, he said he was planning a rarities set which would include some amazing stuff that had never been heard before even on MP-3. Now, asking us fans to select tracks that WE KNOW is a limitation in itself, isn't it?

P.S. - Alright, I was the next one to get carried away. I get it now. This is purely hypothetical.

DISC ONE

The opening songs are 1966 live material by The Lower Third. Apparantly, some of these concerts were broadcast by Radio London so there is likely to be some recordings. The first was a rock interpretation from a rather grand classical symphony - Gustov Holst's The Planets and was the closing song. The second was originally from the Mary Poppins soundtrack and - as mentioned by Pegg - would surely blow The Laughing Gnome out of the water.

1968 song performed by Feathers.

A couple reasons for this next one. Firstly, another album outtake - Conversation Piece - sat in the vaults for 20 odd years and is a very fine song. Secondly - like the aforementioned track - this was re-recorded for Toy.

The next 7-8 tracks are pretty straight forward. It maintains the Ernie Johnson rock opera in it's entirety.

From what I've heard, Sysiyos list is the most appealing. But then again I haven't even heard of some of the stuff that you're mentioning Adam. Guess that would actually make your list more rare.
If I were to make a list, I would have made mine quite similar to Sysiyo's. I would try not to include songs like Space Oddity or Ashes To Ashes, cause I don't consider them such rarities since they're not that different from the originals (that everyone's heard a lot of times).
I would rather include Shadowman (original version) and Tired Of My Life.

Adam's list gets my vote hands down. I would never choose tracks previously available on (official) CD if I had the chance to select real rarities.

Well, my point also was that you should have heard all the tracks you're listing... but apparently I forgot to say that. And Adam would probably have made that same list anyway, regardless of what I say.
