Sound + Vision Out

And it's lovely... a heavy duty box, big booklet (with MINIMAL mistakes! Hurrah!), reasonably priced ... though it says it was originally issued in 1983. Duh!

But now it means that three consecutive Bowie releases have had the three worst covers of his career: ClubBowie, Reality (tour edition cover is worse than normal issue) and now the S+V box cover, which was a bloody mistake 14 years ago too.

Oh, and Auntie Diamond David, taking exception with the quality of a release doesn't make me a closet queer.

Yes, that does sound hideous. It must've taken all of two seconds to think up.

Reality (tour edition cover is worse than normal issue)

I wouldn't have thought that was possible.

I think the original was very well-conceived, certainly the best cover for a Bowie compilation to date (not that there's much competition).

Is the new box set remastered? Has the sound been improved over the old Sound and Vision box set?

Re: Sound + Vision Out new [re: russellmael]

Whats the new box for S+V like? I have the original which is in an LP sized plastic box. The picture of Bowie with his guitar on the front of the clear box which matched up with the same picture created by the four CDs. Pretty Funky monkey. I've stuck the new one on my chrimbo list seeings as I have the original and there's only a smattering of tracks that I don't already have.

Re: Sound + Vision Out new [re: Sysiyo]

I know they wanted to leave a lot of singles on the box set for the general public, but it would have been better to use alternative versions. That way if the person who bought the album likes a song, they may be tempted to buy the original album the song was on.

That's the view I have with greatest hits CDs. Why use album versions when single mixes or edits are available? If someone really likes one of the songs then they would but the album thus increasing sales.

Anyway, back to Sound + vision.

They should have used the alt version of The Bewlay Brothers;
The live version of Panic in Detroit
The really long version of Ashes to ashes (if it actually exists)
The really long version of Putting out fire
Some of the single mixes of the Tonight and Never let me down tracks
The demo of Loving the alien
More rarities generally.

I suppose the release of this box set means there won't be any collection of rarities comingout for a long time.

Re: Sound + Vision Out new [re: russellmael]

Thank you my good man for the mention:-).
Actually what makes you a closet queen is simply your whole attitude to your posts(?),it's all very obvious, you really should'nt be sooooo touchy darling...
I am in total agreement with you RE: the cover (if cover is the term?) to those poor Bowie mixes( orrible vile orange YUK),I have to disagree with you on Reality,I think that is one of his best Album covers ever!,I have the lithograph framed in my study,it's beautiful art,I also adore the silver cover to the Tour edition( it gives it some tacky style).
Now to the Release of Sound&Vision the box set?,I really do adore the cover and colour of the box set( why should it resemble other box sets?),as i stated in another post,I actaully bought mine on Tuesday 2/12/03,It was priced at £34.99 in HMV,I had a voucher for £5.00 off every £35.00 i spent,I really did'nt think they would accept my voucher( being a penny difference)but they did YAY and so it only cost me in total £29.99,all tracks have been remastered,I must admit i hav'nt seen the error you speak of RE: 1983 released previously,If? it's there,I will be sure to reply...

Fookin'ell.

I don't know what I've ever done, but I'm sorry if listening to what others say and giving well balanced arguements in return about what is wrong with Bowie isn't welcome to you. Maybe if everyone just slagged everyone else off this would be a really good forum, with no one learning anything?

I think you miss alot of irony in what I say (who could take Bowie seriously???). I can tell that as your posts are poorly written and humourless. And that isn't me getting angry, just as I see it. The Englishness of Bowie is lost on lots of people... especially the more Vaudeville element.

Anyway. It stops here. :o)

P.s.
Putting Out Fire is original version.

1983 thing is in the small print at back of book.

Tin Machine selection is stupid too... re-writing a history that is fine how it was.

The Boxset concept does stand out, but the lettering + cover photo is bad, it would be magnificent if it was, say the Ziggy picture on the cover on the disc 1 of the original set instead.

But then we'd complain they changed it!

Well Ok... I would.

Oh and ignore Diamondogz, it seems to be the best way. Maybe he's 'playing' a deliberatly antogonistic character on these message boards, but I can't be arsed to find out.

LOL,do me a favour, get back into that dream car 20' long, you are insane and poorly educated to think that anyone on here takes notice of anyone else LOL,My good man this is a site for people like you to pretend you are clever-ish...
As for the vaudiville aspect of Mr Bowie ( good that means you have read some???),as for the Englishness of Bowie, you are out of your depth dear child,There is NO person more English than me on here,I am 100% loyal to Bowie,You and your sort continually pull everything he does to pieces...WHY???,It beggars beliefe you call yourself a Bowie fan( the word MOANER being more precise).
You cannot, nor could teach me anything of Bowie,I simply know the lot:-),ask me anything you like regards Bowie? and i will tell you all,the choice is yours.

Re: Sound + Vision Out new [re: trendy rechauffe]

My take on trendy's idea of inclusing more rarities/alternate versions... I'm not writing an entirely new list, just pointing out ones I would have done differently.

Young Americans (single version)
TVC15 (the single version from Christiane F., which is imo superior to the album cut)
"Helden" (original german single mix, because the remix is rubbish)
Ashes To Ashes (live @ the Tonight show, 1980)
Cat People (soundtrack version single edit, imo superior to the full version)
Loving The Alien (dub mix)
Dancing With The Big Boys (ext. dance mix, probably should be edited from the seven minutes it currently is to around four)
Blue Jean (the ext. dance mix could be used, though it imo inferior to the original)
Time Will Crawl (dance crew mix, and add a few more NLMD tracks)
Amlapura (the superior indonesial vocal version)
You've Been Around (I'd love to use the edited Dangers mix instead of the album version, though the Dangers mix was featured on full in BTWN 2 CD + DVD release)
And please do not use the moodswings mix of Nite Flights.

I liked the idea of the Bewlay Bros alternate version being used... I can't see when that would get a reissue otherwise.

Also, two versions of Round and Round are out now... neither the original single mix!

You've really let yourself down there, mate. I'm not bothered, but you've insulted probably everyone who finds this place fun, informative and constructive. Oh, and that offer...? Don't forget... I've seen your website so I know where I stand on that score.

Two rules I stick to on messageboards:

1) If someone attacks the PERSON, rather than the content of the message, I know they have immediately lost the arguement.

2) If someone is too sloppy (full stops after exclamation marks?) They don't warrant a response.

That's why you won't get another peep from me.

Bear in mind that the version on S+V is a remix from 1989. For the original, I suggest looking up the Christiane F. soundtrack.

Good one Sysiyo. That would have improved the usefulness of the box set. Along with the info for each song, they could have listed the album the original versions are on (if available) so the new fans can track them down.

That I think is a minimal requirement for a compilation album. I was extremely pissed when I noticed The Very Best Of Jethro Tull did not include any info on where to find the originals.

Hi there:-),
Club-Bowie is a particularly vile coloured CD of Bowie mixes,Its out on the Virgin(crap label in the UK),the cover is a vile luminous orange YUK,the tracks are poor mixes,Its infact a very corporate CD and i don't think you would like it?.
Alas its not Bowie as we know him,I bought mine then took it back ( after re-writing it LOL),Its a complete waste of money.
As for Helden?,now thats Bowie in class,Im very fond of that version...

Re: Sound + Vision Out new [re: russellmael]

Just got my copy, I got the original, but like the new version, a few more rare tracks would've been nice, it was worth the price of admission for Time will crawl being followed by Baby can dance, the latter feeling like a breath of fresh air for David.

Some of the typography could've been easier to read and more track information would've been nice.

The biggest travesty of the last 13 years is that the live version of Panic in Detroit is still not available officially on cd.
The best song (not) on David Live.

A nice Box set spanning David's live work throughout the last 30+ years would be nice next.

I suppose we'll get Now that's what i call the greatest best Bowie album in the world...Ever (tour edition) first though.

Re: Sound + Vision Out new [re: pablopicasso]

As I've said before, I really did prefer the original.... a far more concise set. The new one loses it's way badly on the last disc. And one thing really annoys me... Blue Jam severed from the 3rd disc and the rest of the Tonight material, especially when there is enough room to shuffle it around a little.... even if it meant putting 1984/dodo onto the end of the 1 disc to close the chapter on that first wave/ spiders period.

Then again, I suppose there will always be little things like that.

The typeface is bad, and that cover photo... but it is unforgiveable having the same old errors in there. And some new ones.

I got a copy of the promo set and that has spelling mistakes on every disc. Tut Tut.

That said, because most tracks are remixed (even on the first couple of discs) having both is sadly needed (and Bowie knows it).

And like I said right at the top, the whole is lovely and worth far more than the sum of it's parts.

That said, who would rather get that new Jacques Brel set +DVD that has come out?

That is very sloppy but I'm assuming they don't have the same labels as the original (i.e. with the album titles written on the CDs). By the way, is Blue Jam what you get when you leave the jar open for a couple of months?

No the labels are very minimilistic, just grey with a number on them. They are clear plastic sleeves which have all the information on them but it is difficult to read, slim jewel cases would've been better if not so unique.

RE: Slim jewel cases would' been better if not so unique.
The use of the word "Unique" being the meaning of this set.I would have thought any respectable Bowie fan did not need constant reminding of what track is what?.Simply enjoy the uniqueness of the set,After all being unique and that one step ahead all the time?,Has been Bowies trademark,And long may it continue...

Yeah uniqueness is good, but will you still think that when the plastic starts to split and the adges curl? I love the set just wish it was more, I know a set like this will never be all things to all people, but sound and vision was released in 1989, couldn't they just have made a different collection this time?

Yeah ok i understand where you are coming from,But there was a lot of people who missed out on that first Sound and Vision set,Me for example!,So you see i treasure the re-release of this new set(and its different in appearence also),What about the recent releases of Bowie re-releases?,Did you own all them?,Or were you like me?,Pleased they had re-released them,There are a lot of younger fans joining TW all the time,We talk of these albums/CDs and how FAB they are,Consider yourself a new member and reading all the fabulous threads about Bowies albums that you do NOT have?,Theres always two sides to every issue.I do agree with you on the plastic cases maybe splitting from excessive wear,I always record my Bowie albums onto MDs or burn them onto CD-Re-writes,This then gives me the oppurtunity to play them as often as i like?,And keeping the originals new,Its an idea if you have the equipment?.

Re: Sound + Vision Out new [re: diamondogz74]

Very good point.

I started with Bowie in 83, started getting CD's in 92 so was able to get all the Ryko (emi) cd's plus the original BTWN and TBOS. Wasn't going to get the remasters but bought them all in the last two months on Ebay plus a load of singles i never bothered with in the 90's. Heathen and Reality were what really got me back into Bowie even though he's been my favourite artist for 20 years. I lost the way around the time of 1.Outside, which in the last year has turned into my most played CD. Funny how times change. I can remember 20 years ago having a battered copy of The illustrated Record and hoping one day to own all the wondrous songs inside, now I do and still love every one of them and all that has come along since. To those starting out on your Bowie adventure, enjoy the ride.

Day after day, they take my friends away,
to a mansion cold and grey,
on the far side of town.
