Re: Hours, Heathen, Reality. new [re: Claude]

HOURS = nice game soundtrack but for a complete bowie album a bit too boring. i love something in the air, but seven and survive bore me already.

HEATHEN = brilliant come back. nice songwriting. i only skip the poor neill young cover. i love i will be your slave because it has a strange bowie touch. i also like slow burn after not listening to it for a while.

REALITY = a bit stranger than heathen. apart from the title track a brilliant album. i don't skip the george harrison cover. these days my favourite. though i guess i like the heathen SACD more on long sight.

In order of preference...
1/ Heathen( Brilliant pure Bowie)
2/ Reality ( Wonderful album,Tad over done)
3 Hours ( Very good and great vocals )

Heathen wins in my book easily,Its the Bowie we all know and LOve,Reality was made for a BIG audience.

Re: Hours, Heathen, Reality. new [re: Claude]

heathen in a walk, despite the cactus cover. even though i don't dislike anything on reality (unlike hours...), an album full of good songs (well, ok, the last track is essentially mediocre) can't overcome the lack of conceptual unity and an absence of any top-shelf material

i would call hours... a good album (a few really nice tracks), reality a very good album, and heathen an excellent album

interestingly, i would say that reality, despite being a better album, is more forgettable than hours...

I think Heathen's overall the best of the 3 choices. I also like most of Reality. Bring Me the Disco King is excellent, and I love the first 3 songs on the album. Heathen's more consistent though. My favorites are I Would Be Your Slave, Afraid, and Heathen (The Rays). Only the Neil Young cover and A Better Future are weak on it. Hours is only fair in my opinion, though I do like Survive.

That's a tough one, Claude, as I only listen to a few songs from each of those albums.

hours - Thursdays Child, Something In The Air and If I'm Dreaming My Life.

Heathen - Sunday, Slip Away, I Would Be Your Slave, 5:15 The Angels Have Gone and Heathen (The Rays).

Reality - The Loneliest Guy, Looking For Water, Bring Me The Disco King.

I guess Heathen wins with 5 songs.

If you don't have anything nice to say, go to London and say it in front of 2000 people. NM.

Re: Hours, Heathen, Reality. new [re: Tristan]

Hours has gone up a lot in my estimation recently. It's certainly the starting point of this current Bowie phase, and in Something In The Air it does possess one out and out classic. The songwriting is fairly high standard throughout. What stops it from being any better than good is the underproduction. Notwithstanding the late-in-the-day polish applied, it still sounds thrown together for a game soundtrack. Had it gotten a full production from the start, it could have been so much better.

Heathen is on its way to being Bowie's accepted late career classic. Reviews at the time were muted to good, overall no better than most of Bowie's 90s albums, but unlike Bowie's 90s albums word of mouth kept it selling for much longer, and eventually the critics came on board too. Heathen was a crucial album as it proved to everyone, not least himself, that Bowie could write alone again. And not just do it, but produce his most popular and acclaimed album in ages in so doing.

Reality has gotten better reviews, Bowie's most consistently good in decades, but for whatever reason hasn't had the same impact on the fanbase. Maybe it was just too soon after Heathen, and people weren't ready to absorb a whole new album that is quite different to Heathen. Or maybe like Dice suggests it's the lack of conceptual unity. Personally I love it, but accept that it has the feeling of being minor, almost a footnote.

Slan libh,

Dara

Not A Bad Triple new [re: Claude]

1 "Heathen" - A top Bowie Bowie album. His return to pop music's highest standards.

2 "Reality" - A good Bowie album. A few great moments meeting good craftmanship, thus creating a cheerful rock album.

3 "Hours" - Better than many say. It is not bad. It just isn't diverse enough. All the songs are very similar but "Something In The Air" sets a very high standard which the rest of the tracks cannot reach. Still there are good tunes to be found, it just lacks the excitement.

I have the same problem with "Heathen" that I have with "Heroes": since I seem to be the only one who doesn't realize its brilliance, I guess I'm not in the right frame of mind/position/perspective/whatever to understand it. But, like "Heroes" (the song, not the album), I think some songs from "Heathen" sound a lot better live. "Sunday" is the best example: I love the extended intro and the fantastic guitar solo, which reminds me of David Gilmour. "Slip Away" also sounds great with the audience singing along. David should definitely release live versions of these songs. His voice also sounds better. I'm not sure, but I think there was something wrong with David's voice during the "Heathen" sessions.

Gilmour? Well, I would rather say that the current Early Slick live solo in "Sunday" owes a lot to Ronno's grand work on "Moonage Daydream". Might not even be just an accident.

Re: Hours, Heathen, Reality. [re: DocFederfeld]

Heathen is my favourite of the three.

Musically I don't like Hours at all... it's Bowie for people who like The Lighthouse Family and Dido. But lyrically I think it was important as it got him back in to quality song writing.

Reality's very strong, but the middle is a bit poor and does nobody else think his voice is a bit... whiny, on this album? Where's the deep pitched Bowie gone?

Re: Hours, Heathen, Reality. new [re: Claude]

This oneŽs easy!

1. Heathen
I do believe that this is the one record that lived up to that old "his best since Scary Monsters" line.

2. Reality
Pretty solid album that has one major flaw: Looking for water, worst Bowie song since Too Dizzy. Oh wait, Too Dizzy was better.

3. Hours
Underrated album if you ask me. Works a hell of a lot better if youŽve experienced Nomad Soul.

IŽd spit on your heaven

Actually, "Heroes" doesn't seem to be quite as well-received as Low, which has always seemed rather odd to me, since they're so similar, so I wouldn't say that you're necessarily in the minority there. Heathen, on the other hand, does seem to receive more than its fair share of praise. Sure, it's an improvement on 'hours...' but not by much. Heathen (The Rays) is particularly overrated, though admittedly some would say the same of Bring Me The Disco King.

Heathen sounds more "classic" than Hours or Reality. My own personaly opinion gives narrow victory for heathen over the other two.

I do actually think Hours is a good album. Only the production and one or two horendous lyrics(ie: abracadoo) away from being considered great.

Re: Hours, Heathen, Reality. new [re: Claude]

I grow more and more fond of Heathen as time passes. It is already a classic. I didn't like it at first, something with the production that I thought sounded very dated and I had to get used to it. By now I think my favourite song is Slip away - it was definitely not from the beginning!

Hours - there is something I don't understand here! Somehow the parts are bigger than the whole. When I really concentrate on listening to the songs, then I see greatness, not the least in the riffs. But try to just put on the CD in the background and do something else, then it sounds like a really boring album. You have to listen hard in order to like it. I don't know why. Is it just me? Does it have to do with the production?

Re: Hours, Heathen, Reality. new [re: Emil]

I agree with you about hours, there are some great songs on there but i do find the album a little boring. I don't know why thought when there are songs like Thursdays child, seven, survive, something in the air and PTAGTH on it.

Heathen took me ages to get into, it was only when i stumbled on the digipack with bonus disc and subsequently put the standard cd in my car that i really started playing it, and i haven't stopped (this was about march last year). I love Sunday (now), everyone says hi, gemini spacecraft, afraid, 5.15 and heathen itself.

reality, this album was an instant hit, i think because it gets off to such a rocking start and keeps on going, i wasn't sure on the cover, so unlike a bowie cover. New Killer Star should've been a huge hit.
Seen as a job lot thought I think Bowie has hit yet another purple patch in his career, i regualarly play the three together. I wonder how Toy would've sounded between hours and Heathen though?

OK I've got most of the tracks of it, but i wonder what the sequence would be?
