NEWS: Bowie ready for more experimentation new

Bowie ready for more experimentation

David Bowie, pushing 60, has said he's headed for another spell of experimentation.

Speaking in Tokyo to kick off the Japan leg of his current world tour, Bowie said he is stripping down his act in order to try out some new approaches.

"I'm heading for another period of experimentation," he said. "(I'm at) a time when I'm collecting myself before I break all my own rules."

The iconic artist has gone through various personas during his more than three-decade career - Ziggy Stardust, the Thin White Duke, Philadelphia soul man, avant-garde rocker.

Now, he said, he wants to focus on his song writing and singing.

"It's probably the simplest tour that I've ever done," he said, dressed in grey cargo trousers and a hooded sweat shirt.

"This is very stripped down. It's really not working with theatrics at all."

The tour is Bowie's first in seven years. Bowie released his latest album, Reality, last September.

The 57-year-old Bowie said it was harder to get his music heard these days, especially on radio stations, because of his age.

But he added that he enjoys seeing life get simpler as he gets older. "I was quite scared of getting old in my 40s," he said. "But as I approach 60 ... you learn to embrace getting older."

Presence And Future new [re: Adam]

Well, to me it sounds as if he is talking about the current tour as being experimental. Stripped down and stuff. He is not referring to future experimental projects unless you call songwriting and singing futuristic and experimental..

And I want to believe
In the madness that calls 'now'

I agree that part of it sounds like that, but he also says

"(I'm at) a time when I'm collecting myself before I break all my own rules."

"I'm heading for another period of experimentation,"

No EJ. He says: "I'm heading for another period of experimentation," he said. "(I'm at) a time when I'm collecting myself before I break all my own rules."

Sounds like the future. He better be talking about the future!

Edit: sorry Adam, you were a tingsy bit quicker than me.

Some of the quotes justify your interpretation, but on the other hand "I'm heading for another period of experimentation" and "(I'm at) a time when I'm collecting myself before I break all my own rules" point the other way.

Wear your wound with honour.

But wait, I'm getting ahead of myself new [re: Earthling on Fire]

We're all jumping ahead to quote the same lines. But what also interests me is Bowie's talk about "stripping back". Remember Tin Machine was a stripping down of theatrics ....one that was necessary before he unleashed albums like Outside. We may well be back in the early stages of the experimental cycle.

"(I'm at) a time when I'm collecting myself before I break all my own rules."

"I'm heading for another period of experimentation,"

Of course he says so but still it sounds to me that the current tour (and album?) is already part of that process. Hence his explanation of experimentation in this very article. We cannot just judge from the two sentences that fit some interpretation while the rest doesn't. Furthermore I would heavily doubt that he puts down an upcoming tour leg by saying it is already outdated because he is up to something new afterwards. I think he is trying to beef up his reputation in Asia by claiming that he is again in a process of change. not that he is gonna change for more interesting things after this nasty old fashioned tour bit in Japan is over.

So he seems to be going on about experimentation in progress - not a clear cut break from what he is doing right know. The "now" is already a part of the experimentation. I find that pretty clear.

The only mistake Bowie can make is playing it safe. As much as some dislike Tin Machine or fail to comprehend Outside, that is what Bowie is all about.

Interesting how he comments on not being able to produce hits. Will that mean he will throw all his wackiest ideas into the next album? Let's hope so...
