Re: What do your family think of Bowie? new [re: Max_M]

My Mom is 2 months older than Bowie and spent all her formative years around the London, UK area. She helped explain to me some of the obscure references in DB's early 60's hits. One example is Love You 'Til Tuesday is a parody on actress Wednesday Adams.

Re: What do your family think of Bowie? new [re: Max_M]

My dad doesn't think anything at all about him or any other musician. I think he is tone deaf. My mom once said that he admitted to only recognizing the national anthem because everyone would stand up. I've heard him sing a portion of "Swing Low Sweet Chariot" in the car several times. It wasn't pretty.

My mom always supported my appreciation of Bowie and feigned an interest in the songs I would play for her and the movies with him in them that I would ask her to watch with me. The only problem is that she has the uncanny ability to act fascinated in something when she really couldn't care less. So, no, she humored me, but it didn't do anything for her personally.

My oldest brother (who lives in Australia) is a music and computer teacher, but I don't think he has any interest in Bowie. Every time I mention being a fan of David's in conversation, my brother has had no comment of any kind on the subject.

My sister, who is also a music teacher, once confided in me that she thought about having a crush on Bowie during his Ziggy Stardust era. Other than this, she shows no real interest in David or his music.

My next oldest brother liked Bowie's music during the early 70's, but was a bit put off by his bizarre style. He actually gave me an audio tape he had made of "Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars" long before I actually bought the album myself. He isn't familiar with his newer material, but he still respects the older stuff. He is also aware that Bowie has toned down his image quite a bit in recent years.

My 3rd brother enjoys a lot of classic music, including Bowie. He especially liked "Space Oddity" and its follow-up "Ashes to Ashes". I remember hearing him sing, "This is Major Tom to Ground Control -- I'm stepping through the door..." when I was quite young. Imagine my shock soon after I became a Bowie fan when I saw a clip of David singing those very same words! Other than a passing interest in certain songs, however, he isn't a Bowie fan either.

None of my family were into Bowie, or had any of his albums, so I had to discover him myself. I bought Best Of 1969/74 and was hooked. Since then:

Dad (60)- only music he is into is fifties stuff, so he not interested, but at same time doesn't really care about some of Bowie's "gayness". Nice one Pa!

Mum (55)- She puts up with and now likes and knows quite a lot of his songs, through me. Her favourite songs of his are: I'm Afraid Of Americans and Let's Dance and even asked me to record Heathen (the album) onto a tape for her! Nice one Ma!

Brother (29) - Has a good appreciation for music, so respects and appreciates Bowie's output, but doesn't actively like a lot of his stuff. Although he did come with me to the Riverside Cinema screening (he loved Hallo Spaceboy!), and is going with me to the Isle Of Wight festival to see him this year. Nice one bro!

Rest of family - My Nan told all her neighbours about me sending a tape off to Star In Their Eyes - saying i was gonna be on telly as Bowie. Ermm yeah right! Nice one Nan!

Its about time I had a signature

Is he actually incapable of identifying a melody or does he just not like music?

My parents do like him a lot. My mother says he's one of the most beautiful men she has ever seen.

Don't have any brothers or sisters and I don't think my grand parents know who he his.... Well another day my granny look at one of his photos (the he looks like Bacall) and said "who is the lovely girl" - hellas.....

Re: What do your family think of Bowie? [re: Max_M]

My father, who will be 53 soon, is a blues musician, so, of course, he listens to a lot of blues. He's always liked classical rock music as well (actually, he couldn't live without it when he was younger), and new bands/ musicians who play classical style music. But new musicians only rarely can get his appreciation, because he thinks that no one can beat the classics and all good things have been pretty much done already (and, of course, he is right). He is conservative that way. As for Bowie, my parents actually told me who he was when I first watched Labyrinth as a child. My father really respects him and knows how influential he is, and likes the Bowie stuff I play quite often, but almost never listens to his CDs himself. And, I think, my father has never been able to completely understand his many images (he says that Bowie has too many faces).

As about my mother (who too will be 53 soon), she's always liked separate songs by Bowie (no, not Let's Dance or China Girl), but lately she's become a fan. She has listened to all my Bowie albums and she likes most of them- some of them more than others, though. By the way, she thinks that Outside is a brilliant album. Also, she's now been to Bowie concert (this tour's Berlin show), and was nothing short of ecstatic about it. She said that it was the greatest show she's ever been to (and she's been to quite many, including Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Robert Plant (what a singer!) and so on). Actually, it was what made her the fan she is now. But it's not surprising that my mother likes David Bowie and even such album as Outside. After all, she was the one who got me into Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins and the likes.

My grand parents don't know who Bowie is. They have heard his name, but they always forget it. As funny as it is, my grandmother too once asked who the lovely girl in one of Bowie's Hunky Dory period photos was.

I don't have any brothers or sisters, or a boyfriend (at least, at the moment). My few friends have heard Bowie's name and approximately know who he is, but don't know much about his music.
