I think Bowie posted for a short while over there as shyster.

I met a song writer from Canada who met Bowie and he told me that one of Davids' favorite songs was Beautiful Loser by Bob Seeger which of course has the line about living like a sailor at sea. So I'm inclined to the possible.

I always thought Bowie got the sailor name from Port of Amsterdam.

I'll be appearing LIVE in Toronto April 1st. Sure, it's a David Bowie show but you're all coming to see me. More importantly, you're coming to see me in my awesome new pants.

I always thought that the name Sailor came from the '78 'Heroes' tour where he dressed up as a sailor. Or from the song Red Sails where he sings
"Red sails
Thunder ocean
Red sails
Sailor can't dance like you, ooh, yooou"

The sisters fell back and said "Don't that man look pretty!"

"Sailors fighting in the dance hall"

I'd say it's a fairly appropriate name for a chatroom or message board.

"Just like a... sailor... with a girl on every port..." Now we know that he didn't write "Here Today, Gone Tomorrow", but it does contain the word. A long time ago, when he had no steady girlfriend or wife, he said his relationships were "a bit sailor-like".

I do believe it was him in the beginning, when I was still a member. Now I don't know.

Re: Bowienet: Do you believe that sailor is Bowie? new [re: Itsmee]

There's also the lyric from Miracle Goodnight:
"I wish I was a sailor, a thousand miles from here."

Which strikes me as curious, because I never realized that Run from Tin Machine has a similar lyric:
"Wish I were a sailor, crossing an azure sea."

But then, why should I speak, since I know nothing.

There's another sailor reference that dates back to the mid/late 60's. Think "Bewley Brothers".

Re: Bowienet: Do you believe that sailor is Bowie? new [re: Itsmee]

My understanding of it was that he had officially confirmed that he does post under the name "sailor". However, I'm still not convinced that it is always him that makes the posts. He could very easily authorize someone else to do so in his name at least part of the time. So, in answer to your question, I think that while it is supposed to be him, we have no way of knowing if it really is all the time.

"So, in answer to your question, I think that while it is supposed to be him, we have no way of knowing if it really is all the time."

Especially because this name is also used in e-mails. Some fellow Bowie fans here in Brazil wrote to "sailor" and got an answer, but it could very easily have been someone else acting on his behalf. I did participate in a few chats a long time ago where "sailor" was there and I believe it was him, but by now the "sailor" monicker has become too "official" and widespread for anyone to be sure.

... perhaps a bit like internet relationships which are mostly "sailor like" and non-commital?

And in a physical sense, the internet allows him to sail (or surf) to every shore.

My cousin's boyfriend has a friend who workd for Bowienet. His job is to go over to Bowie's apartment and find interesting or relevant things on the Bowienet boards. He then reads them to David, who decides whether to reply and what to say, then dictates it to this guy, who types it in and posts it. This saves Dave having to go through all the posts to find ones he wants to respond to.

ne time my cousin had a peice of pumpkin pie that Bowie had eaten part of because this guy brought it over. They threw it away. I would have eaten it.

if you dont behave, I'll turn this message board around and we'll just go home

We've always known about this, because that's how Bowie found about a question here on TW about whether or not it was really him singing "Penny Lane" and "A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You" on a bootleg. He said it wasn't him.

Re: Bowienet: Do you believe that sailor is Bowie? new [re: Pythonis]

interesting observation about ghost writing. David admited to being sailor on US TV, he also claims to be a "daily" on his web site, but let us not forget that a woman wrote his fan mail for mainman in the early days (see the ziggy stardust web archives). he had nothing whatever to do with it, so the debate rages on!

Well im not a member either , but i have read some of Sailors posts.

What you say makes very much sense, also remember he sang of the Sailor who lived in the Port of Amsterdam, not his song i know, but lyrically it all fits. So yes i would say that sailor is most probebly Bowie.

Well, this item did appear on the news page on April 1! I think Total Blam Blam is to thank for it, though.

Boy, I really get around...

Here's a sneak preview of the latest item to hit the BowieNet Store. David has never made a secret of his love of the Zappy folding electric scooter, even claiming to travel around Manhattan on one when the mood takes him.

The Zappy company caught wind of this fact and approached David to make the limited edition Ziggy Zappy exclusively for the BowieNet Store.

At the moment the Ziggy Zappy is available as the regular Zappy or the Zappy Turbo. Both come in white with the Ziggy logo as above. The regular Ziggy Zappy will be selling for $599.99 and the Turbo Ziggy Zappy will cost $999.99.

Postage costs have yet to be finalised, but due to the weight of the Zappy it will be approximately $400 for countries outside of North America and Canada.

However, when the item goes live tomorrow, BowieNetters will qualify for a $3.99 discount when they supply their username and the special code: APOLLO RIF. Here's some of the technical stuff:

The Ziggy Zappy is a compact electric scooter with awesome hill climbing ability and quick acceleration up to 46 mph. A large seat is included to transport you comfortably to your destination.

The Ziggy Zappy features variable twist throttle, rear drum brake, battery status indicators and two 12AH batteries for long operating distance. A standard battery charger is included.

The Ziggy Zappy quickly folds and will fit in a car trunk for easy transportation.

So there you have it kidz. Keep an eye on the BowieNet Store tomorrow and don't forget that special discount code.

Did the BNut boards have anybody who had an interest in the Ziggy Zappy?

I thought the other pranks he did were much more creative and had fans genuinely worried. The 97 one had Bowie with throat cancer and had to cancel the earthling tour!!!!!!!! Check the april 97 TW news archive. I do think that the Zappy one was better than the white house one, which I didn't even understand.

Well, I was worried when I saw this -- about his sanity, anyway! Actually, as I mentioned, I think this was Total Blam Blam's idea. David hasn't been around -- at least not as sailor. Who knows? He could be posting under another name for laughs, but I would think that he is probably just too busy these days.

I think I saw one person who was a bit curious about it, but no one expressed any serious interest in it that I could see. They might have, except that the cat was let out of the bag, so to speak, almost immediately by a few individuals on the messageboards who weren't taken in. Personally, I thought it was funny, but I didn't realize at first that it was intentionally so.
