Blender Names 50 Worst Songs...

'Blender' Names 50 Worst Songs
Apr 20, 11:02 AM EST

Associated Press

According to Blender Magazine, "Don't Worry, Be Happy," and "Dancing on the Ceiling," may have been catchy tunes and big hits, but they still stink.

The music magazine is publishing its list of the 50 worst songs in its May issue. The songs were selected for "crap-tastic melodies," were poorly performed, or just didn't make any sense to the folks at the magazine.

Starship's "We Built This City," from 1985 topped the list

"The truly horrible sound of a band taking the corporate dollar while sneering at those who take the corporate dollar," the magazine said of the tune.

Billy Ray Cyrus' "Achy Breaky Heart" was second, followed by Wang Chung's "Everybody Have Fun Tonight." "If this song was a party, you'd lock yourself in a bathroom and cry," quipped Blender.

Rounding out the top ten worst songs ever are Huey Lewis and the News with "The Heart of Rock and Roll," "Don't Worry, Be Happy," by Bobby McFerrin, Eddie Murphy's "Party All the Time," "American Life," by Madonna and "Ebony and Ivory," the duet by Stevie Wonder and Paul McCartney.

The post-Sept. 11 anthem "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue," by Toby Keith was Number 22. The magazine says Keith's song was "so vengeful, it makes 'The Star-Spangled Banner' sound like 'Give Peace a Chance.'"

Even The Beatles made the list with "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da," which the magazine said sounded like "the desperately chirpy songs Cockneys used to sing to keep their spirits up while the Luftwaffe rained death on them during the Blitz."

Having both Beach Boys and Beatles on the list is nothing short of ridicilous. (Besides, I admit that I love Meatloaf's I would do anything for love)

Re: Blender Names 50 Worst Songs... new [re: Tristan]

Bwa ha ha ha! What a fun read! I absolutely abhor MANY of the songs on this list. Starship has blown chunks ever since it stopped being Jefferson Airplane. Huey Lewis is an embarrassment to all San Franciscoans, and Lionell Ritchie's solo work is worse than that of Phil Collins! And even though many would want to slap me for this, I've never liked the damn Beach Boys. They bore me to absolute tears until I convulse in fits of self-mutilation. They BELONG on any "worst" list--as do any acts or songs that are "new country," anyone who wins a tv competition to get a record contract, and anything by that pointy-faced French Canadian Celine Dion.

But I disagree on a few of these. I like "What's Up" by 4 Non-Blondes (Sandra Bernhard does a great rendition of this song in her latest stand-up act!), "The End" by the Doors, "Sounds of Silence" by Simon & Garfunkle, and "I Would Do Anything For Love" by Meatloaf. And "I'm Too Sexy" by Right Said Fred is hysterical! Anyone who hates that song doesn't "get it."

Who else SHOULD have been on this list: In addition to anything by Chicago, we should add anything by a plethora of other bands named after cities or states (e.g., Kansas, Boston), Journey, Scorpions, Styx, Rush, Bon Jovi, Motley Crue, and Def Leppard.

Oh, and the ABSOLUTELY WORST songs EVER WRITTEN are (it's a tie): "Midnight at the Oasis" by Maria Mauldour (sp?) and that piece of shit known as "Mac The Knife." I am fairly certain that if I go to hell, there will be a room where that shit is piped in at maximum volume while tarantulas eat my flesh and I writhe on a floor covered in salt and glass shards. Man, when music goes bad, it can go REALLY bad . . .

The honor of Worst Song Ever goes to the Ben Folds Five's 'Underground'. I intend to have it played at my funeral (not just for the fitting title) a la Peter Sellers and 'In the Mood'.

Re: Blender Names 50 Worst Songs... new [re: Tristan]

90% of these songs are dreadful.

But I think if they were going to have a swipe at The Beatles, they should have targeted something like their sucky first hit, 'Love Me Do'. 'Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da' seems like a more deliberate novelty song in the vein of 'When I'm Sixty Four', 'Yellow Submarine' and 'Octopus' Garden' (there was usually one on each album).

I also don't have a problem with 'We Didn't Start the Fire', 'Sounds of Silence' or 'Shiny Happy People'.

I have no beef with 4 Non Blondes, Europe, or Crash Test Dummies. Those songs are all fun. I am very glad to see John Mayer on the list, though. I want to run a rusty awl through that kid's face in the worst way.

We all know, however, that the worst song of all time is that Barenaked Ladies crap.

there will be some blood no doubt about it new [re: Marquis]

Scanning over this list I would say that 'excruciatingly overplayed' is as much a key criteria as 'bad song'. That is why it's so nice to see certain listings in particular. And even though the 4 Non Blondes song was more average than it was bad, I am happy for it's listing.

No, no, no, nooooooooo! Sure, the piece of crap swing versions deserve to be burned, without a doubt. But heard in its context, within The Threepenny Opera - particularly the a capella version performed by the Donmar Warehouse - it's sublimely haunting, while horribly - when considering what it's about - catchy. And Tom Waits does a super version!

Re: Blender Names 50 Worst Songs... new [re: Tristan]

Lists like this are great fun. But trying to be serious about this, a somewhat objective criterion might be how well the songs have stood the test of time. Sound of silence is still appreciated in public opinion, as is (as far as I can interpret public opinion) Two princes and The final countdown. Solid pieces of competent songwriting, although the latter two may be accused of being extremely typical for the time where they were written.

I dislike Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da only because it was used as a them song for some dreadful 80's or early 90's tv-show. So it might as well be on that list.

I can see where you are coming from. In Australia it was the theme to the children's show Fat Cat and Friends and I think that's how almost everyone from that era associates it. But then a few years ago, I noticed half the population singing to the same tune remade as "Get A Job" by Offspring. Of course, all memories of Fat Cat were extinguished by the time the opening line of "Desmond has a barrow in the market place." became "My friend's got a girlfriend and he hates that bitch. He tells me every day".

Apart from their blatent attempts to be controversial by attacking the likes of The Beatles and The Doors, I must say this list is a lot less ire-provoking than I expected it to be. After all, Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da is a pretty bad song. The main puzzler is The Sound Of Silence, which really can't be justified with reference to their other work (together and solo).

Re: Blender Names 50 Worst Songs... new [re: Tristan]

It should really be clearer in what it's talking about.

"50 worst hits by well known artists." would have been more understandable, for there have surely been laughably worse songs that never made it to the charts at all.

It's like listing 'Godzilla' and 'Independance Day' as two of the worst films in history. Sure they stunk to high heaven, but they don't hold a candle to 'Plan 9 From Outer Space' and 'Troll 2'. The former films were technically competant and had some interesting scenes, much like the 50 songs listed were either catchy, had good points, or simply lost thier appeal through endless repetition.

being serious about this new [re: pablopicasso]

Not really, pablo. I believe that there exists such a thing as quality and competent songwriting - although I wouldn't dare to try and define it. I also think that as a rule, well written songs tend to be appreciated by many people - the fact that the rule holds an extreme lot of exceptions and that lots of other factors contribute, does not mean that it's not there. In particular, I think that (again as a rule with lots of exceptions) it's the well written songs that tend to be remembered and appreciated over longer times.

So the Blender list primarily consists of songs that either
a) were ill written, still managed to be appreciated by the general public for a short time but not in the long run (case in point: We built this city);
b) were rather well written but were too typical for its particular period, making it look dated from today's point of view (cases in point: The final countdown, Two princes);
c) Songs that neither fulfill a) or b) but didn't suit the personal tastes of someone at Blender (case in point: Sound of silence).

I'm surprised Roxy Music didn't make it with their entire back catelogue...

Must.... fight.... the urge to use..... bozo filter.

Valleri is good because it's so shite, like Captain Scarlet, The Village People and Pat Sharp.

If you think we're gonna make it...

Re: Blender Names 50 Worst Songs... new [re: RabbitFighter]

i have the feeling that a mediocre song released by the beatles is much worse than a bad song released by some boygroup which wouldn't be able to release something better anyway.

why isn't this stupid christmas song by wham! on that list? it's really the worst hit i've ever heard which frequently keeps reappearing on the radio rotation. oh, and of course "music was my first love" which is just a poor wannabe-"bohemian rhapsody/stairway to heaven"-ripp-off.

and Right Said Fred... are they german? their music is completly stupid, boring and lacks any kind of talent. so it wouldn't be a surprise. it think Wolfgang Niedecken appears in the video as well. so i guess this shitty song is at least under german influence...

"Have you tried... not being a mutant?"
