If side A had The Bewley Brothers in place of Kooks, it'd be just about perfect. Side B just has too much disposable material for it to be considered seriously. It's interesting, though, that both sides have quite moody closers, which are generally highly regarded.

As others have said before: Side 1 is the perfect side. The flow from "Changes" to "Quicksand" is magnificent, with those tracks being the perfect opener and closer. "Life On Mars" is the classic wonder track in the middle and "Kooks" is actually a fine transition to "Quicksand", keeping this side from getting top-heavy.
Not that Side 2 is anything less than brilliant - but having to stand against Side 1 from Hunky Dory is simply a doomed mission.

I love this album--both sides--to bits.
Side One it is, though. Changes, Oh! You Pretty Things, Life On Mars? and Quicksand are genius. Kooks is fun, and Eight Line Poem is not among my faves, but has grown on me a bit over the years. As for Side Two, I love Andy Warhol, adore Queen Bitch, and am it utter awe of The Bewlay Brothers, but I've never liked Fill Your Heart or Song For Bob Dylan.
Great album. Sysio, you're wrong about this one.

How'd you know I'm not abstaining because I think they're equally great, having miraculously come to my senses during my absense?

Oh come on, people! Show side 2 some love! Surely Fill Your Heart is forgiveable a hundred times over because of Queen Bitch and The Bewlay Brothers. I actually love every song on this album but my loyalty has got to go to side 2.
Give me lust, baby. *FLASH* Give me malice. *FLASH* Give me detached existentialist ennui. *FLASH* Give me rampant intellectualism as a coping mechanism. *FLASH*
