I was going to say the same. The 97 versions are nice, but for pure emotion nothing beats Hammersmith 73. I heard the Santa Monica version was better, but when I heard it I knew which was better. Garson is the icing on the cake.

Not sure if I've heard those boot versions, Tristan. I do have a couuple live versions for 95(?) and another I think with just Garson on piano. But I think I still like the Ziggy Motion Picture version best, for the reasons EJ mentions. The first time I ever heard this song was when I went to the screening of the Ziggy motion picture in 83--and I was completely blown away. David sustained such an amazing aura of drama throughout that song--he was just ravishing, strong yet vulnerable, masculine yet feminine, angst-ridden yet resigned . . . I just SO fell in love with him during that song. There are a couple places where his voice kind of cracks--not sure if it's intentional or voice strain by show's end, but it works beautifully to add a weary quality to the performance.

You didn't ask me about "My Death"
That's because you didn't mention it in a post, silly. As much as I love the Ziggy farewell version, nothing tops the Boston '97 for sound and pure emotion... and nothing tops Atlanta '97 for visual when you're standing 10 feet in front of him. So take that and put it in your pipe, EJ.

I believe that. He wouldn't even have to sing and it would be the perfect version.
And I hate you for having been there, and at the Elvis show, and the Philly Dogs, and ...

For me it's one of finest Bowie moments captured on film. I don't think I've ever seen such a virtuoso performance by an artist of somebody elses work. How the unearthly figure of Ziggy delivers cold, other-worldly lyrics armed solely with twelve-string guitar & sparse chord changes is both magical & pure genius.
That's made me want to view it right now. Haven't watched it for a couple of years.
