For the record, I also immensely like the re-recorded Space Oddity.
You are kidding Sys ?

I like it, for the reasons that people have already stated. It's weird, it's crazy and it's dramatic. Kind of like Bowie himself.
All bad poetry springs from genuine feeling.

The re-recorded version of Space Oditty is indeed better than the original in my opinion too. The singing (his voice I mean) is far more superiour, and the overall mood of the song fits me better. It was that version that was done during the 50th birthday bash of Bowie, wasn't it??

Though the re-recording is superb, for me it could never top the original; re-recordings seldom do. His voice is incredibly powerful on this version as indeed it is throughout the Scary Monsters album.
Ultimately, I'd say that his vocals peaked with Scary Monsters.

The 1980 rerecording, as found on the B side of Alabama Song and the Ryko version of Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps) versus the original album version as found on David Bowie/Man Of Words, Man Of Music/Space Oddity.

Although one could debate that the original recording was the one done for the Love you 'til Tuesday film in 1968?
Was the LYTT version recorded before the "Bedroom tapes" ie "The Beckhenham Oddity" boot? There is also a partial demo from before the bedroom tapes too.
23! How did I manage that?

Tis not a patch on the orchestatred original from 1969
I find the version you are fond of, rather empty and bland.
