Releasing the Entire Outside/Inside Sessions new

While 2004 comes to a close without a new Bowie album release, I cannot help but think about what could have been released this year in lieu of a brand new album and that is the Outside/Inside sessions.

Obviously, it is a great pain to have to sort through and edit the sessions and for one reason or another, Bowie has not had the time or desire to do so as of yet.

Now we have all had a chance to hear about an hour of leaked recordings......so based on what you have heard - do you think that the Outside recording sessions could be released in it's entirety.....I mean, all 35 hours?

Releasing all 35 Hours of Outside
Yes. Relase the entire sessions.
No. It must be edited down first

If they're gonna release the whole 35 hours... at least release an edited down version too for those of us who aren't crazy.

Bring back Bowie's moustache!

A full 35 hour release wouldn't be aimed at the casual listener. It would only be of interest to dedicated fans, so Bowie wouldn't need to worry about what the general public think about it.

I think he should finish the hyper cycle first, then make a boxed set of the whole series that includes the extra stuff from 1. Outside bceause, in that context, it could contribute more to the story. (Although it wold most likely end up being "new" songs rather than alternate takes of those on part 1 — unless he incorporated those alternate takes as part of part 1, replacing the versions released already on the album. If they have different lyrics, though, they should be included.)

Don’t think about Young Americans as a makeout album

In reply to:

Yes. Release the entire sessions.

I go along with releasing the entire 35 hours un-edited, It's only going to be dedecated fans as trendy says who will want it, so an edited down version would be pointless in view of sales.

Let us hear for ourselves and decide.

How many CDs would a 35 hour set take? 26? 27? Can you even imagine how much they would charge for that? I'm sure proportionally it wouldn't be that expensive... like, 27 CDs for the price of 20 or something. Unless they realize that if someone's crazy enough to buy this, they're probably crazy enough to overpay for it as well. And they'd be right, of course.

Not to mention how fucking boring the thing would be to listen... I mean, I love The Beatles and I couldn't get past the first CD of the Get Back sessions. This is MORE THAN A DAY of audio. "What are you doing tomorrow, Joe?" "Sorry, I'm listening to Bowie's new album." "Oh, well, see you after the weekend, then."

Didn't Bowie intend the album to be six hours long? That's reasonable... but 35? Please.

You made some good points there. I mean it might be a nice curiosity to have 35 hours of Outside -sessions, but the amount of CD:s it would take and, yes, the time it would take to listen... I think it should be edited.

Hello humans can you feel me thinking

You have a very valid point my friend, the longest recording time I think? on a CD is 80 mins ( although I do have some classical ones that run for 82-3 mins at the most ) Im not sure how much they can compress into ordinary CDs? but they would fit nicely onto DVD-Audio im sure.

A very good friend of mine rewrote Pet Sounds sessions by the Beach Boys for me and that is not boring, neither is the John Lennon boxset.

I have NO idea of the original time length.

Re: Releasing the Entire Outside/Inside Sessions [re: diamondogz74]

The difference is, of course that Pet Sounds sessions was edited from about six months of recording. 35 hours of sessions would include a lot of repetition and takes which appear almost identical.

Put it into perspective, Bowie has probably released less than 35 hours of music over 40 years. I would prefer something edited into a listenable experience.

And I am a completist.
