Amnesia?? new [re: jump93]

In reply to:

...there are no rumours yet...

I might be wrong, but weren't there rumours (even posted in TW) about:

1- The new album's orientation being experimental (whatever that means).
2- That a studio was being rented by Visconti/Bowie/Someone around April or May (it was in a post here, but I'm too lazy today to dig it up).

I've been living through these last months with those to bits of information and thinking that as we speak, db is recording demos or writing songs.

`Would you tell me which way to go ?' said Alice
`That depends on where you want to get to,' said the Cat
`I don't much care where --'
`Then it doesn't matter which way you go'

Stats and heart monitors new [re: Sysiyo]

In reply to:

An interesting thing about the break thus far is that there has been (apart from the tour, that is) no Bowie activity since Reality

Heart surgery will do that to you.

That said, even before the heart scare, I was wondering if Bowie had any firm idea where he was going next. Another Visconti album looks a bit too "more of the same" for Mr. "Leave them wanting more". Even Reality had the look of a footnote to it.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is the longest wait ever. Even assuming he gets over his health issues to the point where he feels like working again, I wouldn't be surprised if he thinks long and hard about his next move.

Another factor is the way the industry is changing. Albums are becoming less important. Artists are making more and more of their money from live concerts and less and less from CD sales, and this trend is expected to continue to the point where concert earnings will dwarf CD royalties for most artists. In which case Bowie may be thinking not so much along the lines of "When can I record a new album?" as "When can I tour again?".

I'm personally going to try and convince myself it will come in 2013, having the 10 year-gap inspired by Scott Walker, thus providing me with an even safer barrier from disappointment

Well thats fine for you being only 18 but think of us slightly older fans purleeeze, I mean I don't want to hear the new Bowie album thru an ear trumpet

I really don't think that he feels ready to give the 100% needed to produce a Bowie album at this time. After suffering such a life trauma, he probably needs enough time just to BE

Hopefully this experience WAS traumatic - the he would have something to write about and perhaps would be able to release an album with some stronger concept again.
perhaps he is just busy with working instead of talking about working... i am not too pessimistic about an album suddenly popping up after a weekend session with the reality tour band or something like that. perhaps having to rest after the operation just gave him more time to write some tunes.

Are you bad enough?

Wow, you're all in a rush to panic.

Look at the chart: Bowie has never gone a full three years without releasing an album, at least, not since he was a minor. And that's over the course of nearly 40 years. It's conceivable that it could take him longer this time, but it is not what history tells us should happen.

He's been slowing down, it's true, but I think that has more to do with economics than anything else... He's just not the sort of act who can release two albums a year apart and expect them to sell any more...

The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had.

I think Bowie just said that to buy time. Plus we all know Bowie can say pretty much anything and it'll have little relevance to what he actually does.

The last I heard, Visconti had already booked studio time for last August. Even if there were sessions back then, we can be pretty sure by now that they came to nothing.

I pretty much agree with Dara. Bowie seems to be quite at loss with what to do next. And, as much as I want a new album, I want a new good album, not another halfhearted pointless effort like Reality.

Re: Amnesia?? new [re: Sysiyo]

As I wrote in my post, "Can Bowie survive his new image?" Bowie has always relied on his own beauty and charisma to fuel and inspire his music. For example, "Never Get Old" was the new theme for Reality: Bowie as an ageless blonde rocker who still looks great in jeans.

However, now that he's recovering from a heart attack and is just another rocker who's not aging that well at all, I think Bowie does not know what to do, or where to go. For the first time, he is truly lost.

I think this is taking it a little too far. If anything, yes he is lost for a theme, but I disagree that he is completely clueless. I heard a radio interview around 2002 in which Bowie stated that he never goes a day without writing something lyrically or musically.

I have a feeling the next album will be a combination between Black Tie White Noise and the guitar hooks similar to that of New Killer Star. As it has been previously discussed, Bowie seems to take a theme or feel from a singular song into his following album. Many guessed that it would be Bring Me The Disco King, however BMTDK wasn't written anywhere near the Reality sessions, and therefore it is unlikely that it would be carried over. Bowie obviously liked New Killer Star, illustrated through it's release and frequent live performance, and plus it meets all of Bowie's requirements; new, innovative style of catchy guitar hooks alone, an obvious sign of the sort of music he was listening to at the time (The Strokes etc.), the motif throughout the song of desolation and despair and its combination of both interest among fans and non-fans (to an extent.)

I think New Killer Star, and (due to the lack of saxophone in the previous few albums) Black Tie White Noise are the likely candidates for the feel of the next album.
