Re: Battle Of The Album Sides: NLMD new [re: EJSunday]

'bout equal for me... so I voted side 2 just to be different. Day in Day Out or 87 and Cry are the worst songs... Side 1 probably is a tad slight more consistent, and maybe better... but who cares. It's gonna win anyway.

...and that's the truth!

Re: Bonus Track new [re: JAMIESIM]

"Julie" is a pretty catchy pop song whose melody is almost identical to Blondie's "Maria" in parts. I suspect it could even have been a big hit single had it veen the lead off single. I also suspect it was left off the album because it doesn't really fit. Bowie (and/or EMI) tried to pitch NLMD as a "return to rock" and a continuation of Scary Monsters, and something like Julie would have undermined that pitch.

Girls is a slow portentous melodramatic ballad that sounds like it's making a much more important point than it actually is. The start is considerably better than the rest of the song: in fact, it's one of Bowie's best starts to a song in the 80s. Then after a great build up it degenerates into a standard NLMD chorus. One of the many occasions in Bowie's later career where the verse is a lot better than the chorus.

It was presumably not even considered for inclusion on NLMD, as it had already appeared on Tina Turner's "Break Every Rule" album the previous year. She also included it on her "Live In Europe" album in 1988 (from which a duet of Tonight with Bowie was a substantial hit single in Europe).

In reply to:

(And it seems the running times posted by EJ are those of the CD edition.)

I didn't check but as I took them from Bassman's vinyl section they should be the original LP ones.

Are we going to have a penalty shoot out again, if this turns out to be a draw

I vote for side 1.

Well as side 1 is at this stage trouncing side 2, a shoot-out is highly unlikely you pudding-head.

Oh I can see what you are driving at -- Its just that it is not funny.

You do not like it when somebody has a go at you, do you pablo? But its ok when you want to jump on and pick my every other post to pieces, isn't it? You are a hypocrite.
