Hypothetical: If Bowie Played Live 8

What 3 songs would you have liked him to play?

Possible considerations:

1. The Classic: A well known song that basically everyone will know and can identify with Bowie.

2. The Recent Song: U2 justified their appearance with two songs off their last the last albums so I cannot see why Bowie could not have had atleast one number to qualify his later material.

3. The Interesting Collaborative: Choose another artist(s) from the day that you would have liked Bowie to sing with. The song could either be a Bowie one or something different altogether.

Well, in a slightly different order than you presented, I would envision him doing The Recent Song first, then The Interesting Collaborative, and then ending with The Classic.

My choice of song selections would be for him:

The Recent Song: "Days" with him strumming his accoustic guitar. A slow, serious song to show off his versatility and to captivate the crowd in anticpation of what he will do next.

then...

The Interesting Collaborative: "Can You Hear Me" with Sheryl Crow (although I supposed she is in France now with b/f Lance Armstrong for his final race). I don't know...I just envision Bowie and Crow performing together, as I think they will mesh well together. Not only that, but the song's title and them could be an alternate take instead of being a love song of being a song fitting for the occassion...to make voices be heard.

and then finally...

The Classic: Why, "Heroes," of course. Yes, it is a bit cliche, but it is a timeless classic, can be delivered as a song with a message, and like every other tribute performance before (including Live Aid), it is his standard.

Now, as far as this presently "non-existent" band of his goes, I don't know why he can't simply call up Gerry, Earl, Mike, Gail, Sterling, and Cat. And if some of them indeed aren't available, you can't tell me that he never had backups waiting in the wings just in case. And where's Carlos? Where's Reeves? Geez, where is Mark Platti...you know he always LOVED being in Bowie's limelight and would have loved a piece of this action just to have his stage presence be known (yes, as you can tell, I don't care for Mark too much)!

Ok, now I am ranting and rambling...

For starters, if he were to play a song from Reality, I would have like Fall Dog Bombs The Moon with him on acoustic guitar, or Days would work too. I think Bowie probably would have performed New Killer Star or Never Get Old, though.

Next would come "Heroes" just because it is the song. Rebel Rebel would end his performance, with some nice audience participation.

1. The Classic: "Sound & Vision"
"Heroes" has been played to death. "China Girl" may not suit this kind of event, with its references to Nazism and violence. I guess "Ziggy" would be a contender, but in the end it's probably a little too obscure (lyrically).

2. The Recent Song: I don't like any of the recent songs, so it's hard to say. Maybe "Heathen (The Rays)".

3. If Lou Reed was there, I would have liked him and Bowie to perform "Satellite of Love" together.

GFried: What aspect of your personallity do you think makes you post at a David Bowie message board?
Dara: For me it's pretty much an interest in David Bowie.

Re: Hypothetical: If Bowie Played Live 8 new [re: Adam]

I don't really know if this would be any good for such a big gig, but it would be interesting for sure.

The songs:

Aladdin Sane - I really don't think any track from Reality would have been either good or fitting enough to be used on this occasion. This piece segues into...
On Broadway - With Karl Bartos (of Kraftwerk fame) guesting on percussion. The piano of this piece then segues into...
Ashes To Ashes - The classic to be used instead of "Heroes" (I briefly considered Let's Dance but it might not have been quite fitting for the occasion).

The band:

David Bowie - vocals (obviously)
Mike Garson - piano
Philip Glass - keyboards
Carlos Alomar - guitar
Mark Plati - bass
Matt Chamberlain - drums
Karl Bartos - percussion (possibly vocals) on 'On Broadway'

Days on acoustic guitar is fabulous, a lovely low key way to start the set.
This is then followed by 'Heroes', I don't care how many times this has been done, for an occasion like this, it has to be, however not the insipid version he has been playing the last few year.
Next comes a duet of Diamond dogs/ It's only rock and roll with Mick Jagger.
Finally an ensemble redition of All the young dudes.

Hey Pink Floyd can have four songs, so can our Dave.

You should not underestimate people, not everybody is as thick as you.

Jean Genie backed by U2.

u2 played the song back in may while in NYC - presumably with DB in the audience.

1 "Life On Mars" - The pure Garson/Bowie version and millions worldwide singing along.

2 "Afraid"" - a tremendous live rocker, easily accessible to non Bowie fans too.

3 Bowie and Roxy Music - the old Glamsters together, covering Lennon's "Whatever Gets You Thru The Night", some great saxophone included.

Nice thought this would have happened.
