"Young Americans" 30th Anniversary new

News today posted on Bowienet that the long awaited Young Americans 30th edition will definately be with us in a few months time, NOT rumours this is now official

I quote from Bowienet underneath that we are in for some surprizes regarding the bonus disc, now all you cynics out there will say oh yes it will be this and that track for sure! but Bowienet says there will be surprizes, so any guess as to these wonderful surprizes please?

02.21.2005 NEWS: YOUNG AMERICANS 30TH ANNIVERSARY CD DUE

I heard the news today, oh boy...

Thirty years ago today, the first taste of David Bowie's latest direction was launched upon a completely unsuspecting European public, in the shape of his first slab of "Plastic Soul", 1975's Young Americans 7" 45 single. An edited version had been released in the US the previous month.

Though a select few US fans knew of Bowie's flirtation with the Philly sound, (having experienced it during the tail end of the Diamond Dogs tour, which come to be known as the Soul Tour or the Philly Dogs Tour) the single was quite a shock to David's European fans (albeit a pleasant one) and indeed to anyone who was expecting something else in the Diamond Dogs vein.

Of course, the previous single, Knock On Wood, had been more than a hint of things to come and David scored another Top 30 hit in the US and a Top 20 hit in the UK with Young Americans.

IMHO, the songwriting (particularly the lyrics) owed as much to David's latest favourite artist, Bruce Springsteen, as it did to the sound of Gamble and Huff. David recorded three Springsteen tracks during the Young Americans sessions.

Radio stations in the UK and the US were furnished with an outrageously butchered 3.11 minute mix, (see demo disc above) almost 2 minutes less than the 5.01 minute full single mix which was the same as the upcoming album version.

Anyway, I'm getting spottery again... The point of this news piece was to inform you of a new 30th Anniversary double disc edition of the Young Americans album due in a few months.

Without the aid of a time machine we certainly have no chance of hitting the exact 30th anniversary date. However, if everything goes to plan, there are going to be some very nice surprises on this one.

I'll post more details, such as release date and tracklisting as I get them.

Say that again? Three Springsteen tracks, in the YA sessions? I know of only two he's released, and only one of those is from the YA era (at least if Pegg is correct, and he usually is). If this is true, might be a hint on what the 'surprise' will be...

In any case, my prediction of the bonus disc (taking into account the surprises):

1. John I'm Only Dancing (Again)
2. Who Can I Be Now
3. It's Gonna Be Me (alternate version) - fully orchestrated version, unreleased
4. After Today (alternate version) - 'ballad' version, unreleased
5. Young Americans (single edit)
6. Fame (single edit)
7. It's Hard To Be A Saint In The City
8. Fame '90 (gass mix)

The two alternate versions are not entirely unlikely, as the reissued Sound + Vision included alt. takes too. However I would think it more likely that the normal versions will be used.

I myself was at a loss with this track? It didn't seem to fit in anywhere in my mind, but after several listens Im now convinced as you say Sys that it fits Young Americans on a vocal link only, certainly not musically IMO.

For Blacktropic's list...

Fame [flute mix] We still don't know if this is genuine or not.
Can You Hear Me? [with Cher] Unlikely.
Footstompin' Ditto.
Young Americans [circus mix] The last time I heard, this is actually a mistlabel of the Serious Moonlight tour rehearsal performance.

However the Ryko mix of Fascination is likely to appear.

Musically speaking I totally agree with you Mike regards S2S but on a vocal link only! It's more akin too YA, which is why I've always found it difficult to place this song

Footstomin would indeed make a great bonus track.

In reply to:

1. Fame [flute mix]
4. Can You Hear Me? [with Cher]
6. Young Americans [circus mix]

Cannot argue with that fine selection Tom although Im not sure what you mean by [circus mix?]

Im kinda hoping that the Cher duet of "Can You Hear Me?" would be included along with the "Young Americans" medly off the same show, considering they can make any old recording sound good now, an example being putting a 5.1 dts mix on The Wizard of Oz and that dates 1938 I believe?

9. John Im Only Dancing (Again)

That track is a must.

Those were the 3 songs that I refered. I had to dig through websites to remember which ones. It's on a bootleg alongside the 1980Floor show.

I also heard rumours that when Lennon was in the studio they attempted more than one song.

If fan speculation really went obscure they could suggest live YA tracks from late 74 and even the instrumental Garson piano intro to Philly Dogs performances.

Am I right in thinking that legend has it that the third collaboration was 'You can have her, I don't want her, she's much too fat for me'?

Legend also has it that the tape was burned (ceremoniously). Probably an apocryphal story.....

Let's Twist Again new [re: bowiefanpeter]

I had a bit of email correspondence with May Pang a couple of years ago. She was quite certain that the only thing they recorded during the Lost Weekend / Young Americans phase was 'Fame' and 'Across the Universe'. This preceeded Lennon's musical retirement so unfortunately the possibility of another DB/JL collaboration looks very unlikely.

Regarding the alleged third song, the official title is 'Too fat polka' and it could have just been a Jam, rather than a serious attempt to record another song, hence May Pang's assurance that there was only two songs recorded.

Re: "Young Americans" 30th Anniversary new [re: Rocknrollinbitch]

A side note to the "burning tape" story is that all 4 beatles did a session in LA during Lennon's "lost weekend". After listening to the tape all 4 agreed to burn the tape immediately and never speak of the session. Ringo referenced the session sometime after George died.

<<Memory of a Free Festival>>

Garson did the instrumental version on the 74 tour, and there is one bootleg containing his set. The song(just the chorus) was also reprised during Polyhonic Spree's set on Bowie's spring 2004 shows. For those at these shows you could quickly distinguish the hardcore DB fans since they went nuts when they played the song.

Most Bowie biographers seem to think that the story of the tape being burned is not true and that Bowie retains a copy of it in his archive.

That track you are referring to is Fun (Funtime is from Iggy Pop's The Idiot). And to exact it isn't from the Earthling sessions, if memory serves it was recorded in a separate sessions after the Earthling tour. I also seem to recall the same sessions spawned Trying To Get To Heaven.

Anyway, having that track on the YA 30th would make as much sense as having the '79 Panic In Detroit on the bonus disc of Heathen.

Re: "Young Americans" 30th Anniversary new [re: diamondogz74]

Some interesting insight on the new edition from Tony Visconti's website:

In reply to:

Now that the news has been announced on Bowienet www.davidbowie.com, I can tell you that it hasn't been quiet around our studio in the past month (or two). EMI and DTS are really hot on releasing David Bowie's classic albums in newly mixed 5.1 Surround Sound. I have mixed David Live and Stage, which are available now. I've just finished mixing the amazing Young Americans in 5.1 Surround Sound, too, for its 30th anniversary (has it been that long?). The release will be in a few months. There will be bonus tracks and a surprise.

All the tracks have been mixed from the master tapes to 96khz high definition digital audio. That translates to 'freakin' scary' quality. Mr. Bowie is front and center, but the backing is now spread 360º with Mr. Vandross hovering over your left shoulder for most of the album. John Lennon's six string acoustic is almost entirely in the right rear speaker on "Across The Universe" and you just might hear a comment from him when the song is over. What really brought it home to me was how great David's vocals were, and a lot of them were live takes with him standing in the same room as the band at Sigma Studios in Philadelphia.

You have never heard "Young Americans", "Fame" and "Across The Universe" like this. Oh, don't get excited about young Mr. Springsteen in the photo. He was there only for a visit and we couldn't get him to sing or do anything on "Saint In The City," which was never finished. But it's such a cool photo, isn't it?(below)

Bowie said of the time, "[Springsteen] wasn't happy about [Bowie doing versions of his songs] . . . I was on another planet at the time. I have this extraordinary photograph of us all — I look like I'm made out of wax."

What do you know — he does.

After all the disappointments we've had with EMI so far, do you think they are going to give us anything REALLY new in this edition? My guess is that we'll get "Young Americans" (single edit), "It's Gonna Be Me", "Who Can I Be Now", "John I'm Only Dancing (Again)", "After Today" and MAYBE "It's Hard do Be a Saint in The City". Well Mr Visconti goes on to talk about 5.1 sound and unless Im mistaken that can only be heard on a DVD-Audio disc, so Im guessing that one disc could be a dual disc ( as in the Reality dual disc ) and contain maybe the Cher television show as a video? the bonus disc Im sure will hold a BIG surprize? but we'll just have to wait.

Whatever the BIG surprise is- It WILL NOT be anything we haven't heard before. It's really getting rediculous I mean "It's hard to be a saint in the city" is on the S+V boxset so that even is not new. They just keep putting the same tracks on all the releases and if you bought past releases then there is nothing new to hear. I wanted to collect all the 30th ann. editions but DD 30th was just not worth the money for the extra tracks, that of course, we already previously owned.

I thought the Aladdin Sane 30th very good, Yes it would be nice in 5.1dts but no way am I buying that again.

People have questioned the use of 5.1 in respect of can they hear it on their current DVD players? In most cases yes, this is the start of the 5.1 revolution and as with all technical revolutions had to have a test period.

Re: Surprises new [re: bowiefanpeter]

I once had the textured cover YA album, but don't know where it is anymore. I have only the glossy. It must have been lost in a move at some point. Bummer. It did feel and look good. Nubby.

As for "Memory of a Free Festival" done by the Spree this last tour, that was a BLAST, bfp. I am actually a Spree fan now, believe it or not, but pretty much just tolerated them during the A Reality Tour. Until . . . the last two US shows. They were very good at Jones Beach, NY, and then they were absolutely fantastic in Holmdel NJ. In addition to doing the end refrain from Memory of a Free Festival, they also did Five Years in its entirety--and the entire audience was singing and screeming along with them. Tim DeLaughter did an amazing job of emoting through those lyrics. And then the Spree came back to do Slip Away, by which time I had wriggled up to the front and Bowie was kneeled just two feet before me holding his little stylophone. What an amazing night.

As for the "surprise," I think it is either a picture, poster or some sort of pull-out dealy, or an audio track (maybe music, maybe an interview). I highly doubt there will be a DVD or DualDisc component. I am somewhat cynical that it will be truly "surprising," but hopefully TV knows what he's talking about and we've got something quite interesting or amusing to look forward to that sets this re-issue a bit apart from the earlier ones.

It has been mixed into a 5.1 sound so that must suggest a dual disc format? If not a DVD-Audio release on the same day or at a later date as with David Live and Stage

Like all Im wondering like crazy what this surprize could be? It's the first time I've heard TV use this type of lanuage with an anniversary re-issue, Is he one for overstating? I don't know, Im casting off my cynical coat for this release

Dual new [re: diamondogz74]

I very much doubt the 5.1 DVDA (or SACD) will be a part of the normal release. I doesn't make very much business sense as they could ask more for it if they sell it separately, especially if they'll release it a few weeks after the proper release.

Putting it on a dual disc would also be a bit odd because they would have to be two discs anyway, one for the album proper and one for the bonus material. Plus if they'd include a third disc there would be a horde of people (myself included) who would feel they've been swindled because they're forced to buy a disc they can't play anywhere.

Come to think of it however, it would be possible to make the 'normal' release a dual disc, put the album proper on one side and the bonus material on the other. That could even be the surprise. *shudder*

I wonder how reviewers and DB fans would react i when they open the booklet a bunch of white powder falls on their lap?

Also, I see nobody here has mentioned the fact that the YA album has appeared in several different ëdits/remixes on CD. I wonder if fans will an extened version ala Heathen SACD?

Which version of the cover will be used, since they downplayed the cigarette smoke on the ryko. I just find it annoying, like when they change the colour of Davids eyes on albums.

I read, in the late 70's Bowie book "Diary of a Generalist", there exists a phone interview between DB and Lennon from 1975. It was aired on radio and in circulation amongst some collectors.

To me it has always sounded like the flute was added afterwards, it sounds somewhat out-of-place. The backing track sounds like it's a different version of Fame, possibly a demo or an earlier mix. The question is, did Bowie have someone do the flute as an experiment, or did some Bowie fan get his hands on the Fame 'demo' and decided to add flute on it himself?

Yes, but those songs weren't on the original album when it came out in 1975. I'm always excited when a new Bowie album comes out, but YA was such a change from AS and DD I probably wasn't ready for it. That's not to say I didn't like it when it first came out, but the only songs I find myself wanting to listen to today from that album are "Win", "Can You Hear Me" and "Fame". Thanx to the Ryko CD for the 3 bonus trax of which I listen to the 2 songs mentioned in your post.

I know most people consider this to be Bowie's soul album, plastic soul I guess, maybe Philly soul, but it aint soul music to me. Want to hear some real soul music? Stax. Stax. Maybe Bowie should have stuck around Memphis a little longer when he was there in 1974.

All of which are truly wonderful songs I agree with "Can You Hear Me" probably being the best love song he has ever written, the Ryko disc as you mention is in my humble opinion the best Ryko disc there was, the bonus tracks being such an integral part of the album.

I've never been that keen on the term plastic soul It makes it sound cheap and false, I think it's Bowies interpretation of soul music at that time.

Thank you for the stax links Tristan, yes I've heard a bit about the label Stax and the sites were very good, I've seen the Shaft films with Issac Hayes and the sound is great and as for Bowie sticking around Memphis longer? I think he should return there immediately and make some music

I think it's high time they let the fans have some input into these releases, after all they are for us, It wouldn't take much thought from EMI to make the releases that little bit special, I have lots and lots of classical CDs and when they re-issue the old LPs from 40s onwards to CDs they make them resemble the old LPs in almost every way, Im well aware to EMI it's seen as just another re-issue and money making, but to us it's much much more, these are wonderful re-issues and should be made much better IMO.

RCA exists as an active record label. Several of Bowie's 90's UK singles were released on RCA label, even when the albums were released by BMG.

Thanks for that information Sys, I am fascinated to see who they still market recordings for.

What shall we do to fill the empty spaces?

Well Bowie has asked us to "pour him out another phone" before, so I wouldn't desregard it on grounds of making sense.

My mental image of the first verse is always this couple screwing in the kitchen, which I think is prompted by this whole fridge thing.

Its about time I had a signature

The man delivered the refridgerator to the home and lays her down. Then she signs off on the fridge and he leaves. Probably happens all the time. I have the wrong job.

You need to watch less pornography.

Or more. You'd make a hi-LARIOUS rapist.

Thanks Alan but Mr Visconti really isn't much help is he? mind you he should know considering he's done a 5.1 dts mix on the new 30th anniversary edtion when it appears?

Besides after the botch-ups on Stage regarding text I don't believe him

The only way we will ever find out is to ask the mainman himself somehow? and considering he's an habitual liar will we ever know

Re: "Young Americans" 30th Anniversary new [re: diamondogz74]

Whilst we endlessly wonder when Young Amricans 30th anniversary will finally appear? how about the album cover work, who thinks this would have made a better cover, whether in b/w or colour, your views please.

I know it's very difficult to ever imagine another cover! but how about that b/w photograph with the words Young Americans in the colours of red, white and blue, or do you have any better suggestions?

And a few words on what we were promised this year and what we'll eventually have.

David Bowie is releasing a 30th Anniversary 2CD release of the album 'Young Americans' that features new 5.1 Surround Sound complete with bonus tracks.

Producer Tony Visconti has mixed the work from the master tapes to 96khz high definition digital audio. He said, "Mr. Bowie is front and center, but the backing is now spread 360º with Mr. Vandross hovering over your left shoulder for most of the album. John Lennon's six string acoustic is almost entirely in the right rear speaker on 'Across The Universe' and you just might hear a comment from him when the song is over. What really brought it home to me was how great David's vocals were, and a lot of them were live takes with him standing in the same room as the band at Sigma Studios in Philadelphia."

Nah, don't like it, prefer what they went with a really good atmospheric cover.

Re: "Young Americans" 30th Anniversary [re: diamondogz74]

Calling it 'Young Americans' and having a picture of Bowie with the american flag would have been overdoing the concept. If the album had been called something else, then the flag image might have worked. But overall I tend to agree with Pablo, the existing cover has a wonderful feeling to it that would be very hard to replicate.

The original cover was FAB no doubting that, but it gave no indication to the music on the album, whereas that b/w photo does look as though he's wondering what america is all about and feeling sadness at that thought, pondering thoughts etc...

I hope when the anniversay edition finally comes out? there will be some good photos to accompany the discs.

In NO way am I knocking this cover...

Im just toying with possiblities.
