Re: Tony Defries new [re: b_mardle]

I just look at TD as the the loan shark equivelent of a rock manager.

Where did Bowie think at least 50% of all the money wasted was being taken? RCA?

All that can be said is the Bowie better off after TD than beforehand. Even if he had a major "Student Loan" to pay off.

BTW, is TD the reason why the pre-74 Bowie archive exists?

Re: Tony Defries new [re: bowiefanpeter]

If TD did nothing else good for Bowie, the fact that he got Bowie out of the Mercury contract owning all the recordings and then managed to get RCA to license all those and future recordings (unprecedented at the time) meaning that Bowie is able to take nearly all his recordings and lease them for a specified time to whichever label bids the most. This enabled, eventually, Bowie to buy out Defries completely.

He also managed to bully RCA into paying for the Ziggy tours (plus expenses) and ugrade the original RCA contract on a number of occasions.

Yes, rca and defries did a great job promoting bowie's career, but what they actually did to bowie himself and especially to his personal finances, was a pretty shite thing to do.

Really! like or loathe the man ( TD ) I have NO feelings either way, but he did turn Bowie into a major star, this remote rock figure that Bowie became in the 1970s, when the shows were over the tannoy would annouce... Mr Bowie has left the building obviously pinched from an Elvis idea, but it worked.

Maybe in some way it taught Bowie to be the astute business man he is today.

Yeah ofcourse he's over it now, been as rich as he is i guess he won't be missing those lost millions... Anymore
But it must haved been horrid for bowie to find out back then what a guy, who he thought is his friend, has been doing!

If Bowie was so broke, why did he wait 3 years to tour the UK? Even longer in Europe.

Re: Tony Defries new [re: bowiefanpeter]

Where did you get that 3 years from?
He found out about the true situation conserning his finances sometimes during 1975, and he left to a new world tour in february 1976. The same tour that obviously whent to the uk at one point.
So, when he discoverd he was broke, he waited for about 6 months before touring again.

Certantly not 3 years.

It sound's like you don't beleave that bowie was ever in financial troubles at that time!

Re: Tony Defries new [re: bowiefanpeter]

Let's put this in perspective, there is broke and there is broke. I think most of us could have lived very comfortably on Bowie's version of the word broke. He never had to beg for food or live in a cardboard box.

Just like him saying in an interview last year that he had a heart attack in 2004, Bowie saying he is broke in the mid 70s is just shorthand for saying a lot of money went missing.
