Bad timing in Somebody Up There Likes Me

Just downloaded this song via Itunes. Go to 0:42 and you hear Bowie already say something... Bad mixing or what?

I've always noticed that, Bowie has said a few times now about his albums he leaves a lot of the mistakes in the mix intentionally.

I always just thought he was going "heh" as in a bit of a "hey" or something. I just sat there with the headphones on trying to hear him talking

I've always noticed that too. I thought it was him adlibbing.
Which, I guess is basically the case. But I mean...wow. I just have a new perspective.

I must have heard this album many hundreds of times, you know I never gave much notice to that 42 seconds in, I just thought he was saying *Hey* as in, here we go.

On the outro of Hang On TO Yourself, you can hear Bowie breathe between each 'Come On'. Sloppy mixing.

And even asks for a glass of water at the end of "Life On Mars" ( album version ) If you listen carefully enough.

I always thought he asks Rick Wakeman to stop jingling on the piano, saying something like "that's enough, my dear".

I guess I need to listen to it again.

Re: Life On Mars? new [re: diamondogz74]

He definitely says "I think thats the one" But as he says it someone else says "What", which, admittedly makes it sound like "One glass of water" but if you listen closer, you hear the distinction. Pop HD into your discman dogz, crank the volume up to the loudest setting and just listen to the last few seconds of the piano outro into the phone ringing, it goes like such:
"What?"
"I think that's the one"
"That's fine"
"OK"

In regards to Somebody Up There Likes Me, I just think it's Bowie getting into the groove of the song. Sounds like "yep" from the back of the throat to me, so with a "h" so it comes out "hyep". Or maybe its "hey" with a "p" on the end. One of the two.

"You know that they refused Jesus too"
"You're not him"

You know, you're correct! after 30 plus years of thinking he's saying "Glass Of Water Please" I was mistaken, sorry Alan and other members who said this, I guess it's one of these sayings you hear when young and just convince yourself that's it.

In reply to:

"I think thats the one"

Is indeed what he says.

He came in too early, then when the vocal does start he makes the start sound different to cover up his early mistake. They were going to blank it out but in the end just left it. I thought proper fans new that tchhh

It is not either 'glass of water' or 'I think that's the one'. Ken Scott tells the story here.

Re: Bad timing in Somebody Up There Likes Me new [re: Pablo-Picasso]

What a bunch of ill informed crap!

I love that Emilio thinks that what is being said at the end of MD is "one glass of water" because I have an English cover version of the song and that's exactly what they've put on the end. What is being said is "F*#king bastard" plus some other comments between Ronson and myself, not meant towards me by the way. It comes, once again, from an earlier take.

This is a joke right?

I wasn't frowning at you, but at that load of rubbish, since when was the now infamous "glass of water" quote, ever been heard at the end of MD?

There's something not correct with this Ken Scott page, I think it's a big pisstake.

I don't know why Ken Scott says MD, because they were talking about Life on Mars?. He has been active on that message board a few weeks now and was talking about the Beatles last week.

Re: Great Scott new [re: diamondogz74]

By using Cakewalk Homestudio (how bored am I...), I can without a doubt tell you Ken Scott says "What?" just a Bowie says "One glass of Water", folowed by a clicking noise, Ken Scott saying "One glass of Wine", just as Bowie says "Blockhead", and then it instantly cuts out.
So there.
