Diamond Dogs Tour: why is there no live footage? new

In 1974 there was a lot of press about David Bowie's new Diamond Dogs tour, referring to a complete stage set that he was going to take on the road with him. Built with hundreds of thousands of dollars of Bowie's own money, the set, called "Hunger City," was designed by Jules Fisher and featured skyscrapers, a bridge, and a giant hand. This was possibly the first time an elaborate rock stage show was built .

Surprisingly, however, there is very little live footage of Bowie's Diamond Dogs tour. Given such a large expense and fanfare, there is still not a clear idea about what this show looked like. There are no clear images of the fabled stage set. Why do you think this is? Was there something about this show that Bowie did not want released? Did anyone see the Diamond Dogs tour? If so, what was it like?

I think I can answer your question, to dizzy. Round 1974, Bowie had just discovered cocaine and went on stage drunk with it. He looked foolish. Coked up and silly, Bowie danced on stage during the Diamond Dogs tour like a 13 year old girl at her first sock hop. He was shit faced, giggling and twisting and euphoric. One band member remarked that Bowie would storm around stage like a tiger and would turn his back to the audience in order to peel his dehydrated lips from his teeth.

This footage is embarrassng.

Nonsense! I find the Ziggy Stardust footage rather embarrassing but that's only my opinion, one that most will detest I'm sure.

There is footage of this tour, BBC video taped it.

Seriously, though. Can anyone answer the question? I've always been curious as to why there's no vhs or dvd. What gives?

I don't think to_dizzy's ever been the most stable individual. Maybe this is the breaking point. I'd tell him to borrow my username for a while, but we all know how he feels about identity theft.

If you look at the DD30th cd booklet one will notice the photo's chosen downplay Bowie's thin physique at the time.

And this is supposed to convince us that we don't want to watch it?

The same question could be asked for most of Bowie's tours. Every one of them has been filmed, but only five have had DVD's or VHS tapes released. Why no visual release of the fantastically effective Station To Station tour? Why nothing of the Stage tour? Why no Outside or Earthling tour films?

Answer: those albums are actually good, I dunno how that makes sense, but funny how concert films have only come from poorer albums/tours (although Serious Moonlight was a great tour if you look at the album it spawned from)
