Omnichord / Q-Chord / something else
|
|
|
Famous Omnichord & Q Chord users:
There are many famous artists who use the Q Chord (or old Omnichord) such as Jarvis Cocker, Robbie Williams, David Bowie, Elvis Costello, Brian Eno, Bob Dylan, Ringo Starr and Bjork to name but a few! The pop group 'The High Fidelity' has used the 'quirky' sounds of the Q Chord to good effect and plays the instrument a lot in their recordings. They also share their enthusiasm for the instrument with Radio Ones John Peel. When Sean Dickson (The High Fidelity) was asked on Radio One "What's it like to play, is it easy?" Sean said "Oh, it's very easy, anyone can come up with something in about half an hour. It's not like any other instrument". Brian Eno maintains "I couldn't do without it!"
America.
Is Bowie playing the Omnichord, Q-Chord, or something else in the above video?

Where the fuck have you been?!?
I want a girl who looks good when she wakes up in the morning. We could take her face and dip it in dough and she'll make some nice face-cookies. Some girls wake up, man, you could put their face in dough and you'll get a gorilla cookie, for real!

BowieWonderworld: "David opens the benefit 'Concert for New York City' on the 20th at Madison Square Garden. Amazingly he performs Paul Simon's 'America' sat cross legged on the floor playing an Omnichord. He said inbetween songs: "Thank you very much. Hi friends. Hi fellow New Yorkers. I'd particularly like to say hello to the folks from my local ladder. You know where you are. I must say it's an absolute privilege to play for you tonight. Without further more adieu"... Then David and the band went into an excellent version of "Heroes". The stage lighting behind David had banks of vertical white lights, not too dissimilar from his 1976 and 1978 World tours. He then left the stage with: "Thank you. Have a great evening." David was able to get both Gail Ann Dorsey and Mark Plati involved, along with Tony Visconti in the sound truck to oversee David's part of the show."
Strange that he knew so well which song to take to open the concert. Five years later this choice seems even more brilliant and perhaps even excuses his "heroes" performance the same night.

Thanks for the info, th0mas. I thought it was the Omnichord, I just couldn't tell from that video.

I agree with this observation. I thought "Heroes" on this night sucked. I still do.

If I remember correctly, the people who arranged the concert demanded that he must play "Heroes", to which Bowie replied that he'd only do it if they let him play America as well.

I picked one up after I heard Eno uses one and seeing that show. I really enjoy it, it truly is a good tool to have.
I also picked up a stylophone.... but that's just for shits.

I just found this picture of Bowie with his Omnichord. After clicking on the link, scroll down a tad.
So, what did you get? Omnichord or Q-Chord? How much did you spend?
