Battle Royale 4th Round: Scary Monsters vs. STS
|
|
|
Here comes the next battle and it is indeed two of Bowie's most acclaimed albums which provide the contenders here:
Side 1 from Scary Monsters faces Side 1 from Station To Station in the fight for a place in the semi-final. A clear favourite? Not this time.
Please vote here and drop a line.
The 4th Round Battles so far: - Side 1 from Low beats Side 1 from Aladdin Sane 16:9
Battle still to come: - Side 1 from Diamond Dogs - Side 1 from Hunky Dory
And I want to believe that a light's shining through somehow

Scary Monsters for me, although I almost voted STS so it's very close. I like all tracks on both, but Scary Monsters has It's No Game Part 1 and Ashes To Ashes. Yes, Station To Station has the title track and Golden Years, but like I said its close! And 5 good tracks beats 3 good tracks for me.

I eventually plumped for Scary Monsters on the sole basis that it lasts slightly longer.

Monsters for me too. A close call as both these sides are faultless but the 5:3 ratio as mentioned by Jump93 has won it for SM.

Such happy memories with SM... STS title track is of course excellent, but up against 5 brilliant tracks doesn't compare.
SM it is.

Scary Monsters gets my vote, barely over Station to Station for the reasons given by the other posters.

Well, I did vote for Station To Station. Even the 5:3 ratio doesn't beat the magnificience of Emil.

I have more than once explained why I am not to keen on Scary Mosnters and so Station To Station gets my vote here.

I'm for Station to Station....it contains 3 perfect songs written by DB. Had it been the complete albums, then I'd go for Scary Monsters because it has so many more great songs all in all, and interesting lyrics....but now when it is just the A-sides against eachother than it can only be Station to Station for me. "Fashion" is not a song I'm so keen on...

Station To Station is narrowing the gap so there is still hope. Come on you good folks, we can't let STS drop out here.

Indeed; I voted S2S earlier. There's little to choose between the two, though SM's production is sufficiently screwed up for this vote to work against its favour.

Tough choice - scary monsters has a well chosen opener and three very good tracks and the perhaps best song every being released on this planet Ashes To Ashes. Station To Station on the other hand has a magnificent opener, one nice written-for-elvis fun song and one of bowie's most touching songs to close the site.
Based purely on the songs, Scary Monsters is clearly winning, but considering the flow of the whole side, Station To Station delivers a slightly better balanced choice of songs, making it a good mixture of difference and consistency opposed to Scary Monster's collection of songs which mainly fit together because they sound a bit garage/punk like from a production point of view.
btw. does anybody have the LP version of STS - I've never heard the same recording of one song sounding *that* different on the CD release....

I have the LP too, and the Rykodisc CD. I don't hear much difference between the record and the CD I'll have to dig out the LP again but I don't recall much difference.

Station To Station, the CD release is the 1991s EMI one with stay and word on a wing as bonustracks. on the LP the guitar (at least i think it was the guitar) to be much less prominent. but it might as well have been some stereo phenomen - i am not sure whether the record player used one or two speakers. however - it sounded a lot more diffuse and one did not really "get" what the guitar was heading for.

What a close call and what a mighty recovery by the winner: Side 1 from Station To Station beats Side 1 from Scary Monster by 14:13 votes. After Scary Monsters quick starting sprint into the lead it didn't look like STS had any chance to win here but in the end it did. A mighty battle indeed.
But it ain't over yet for Scray Monsters - 13 votes could well be enough to get through to the semifinal as this round's lucky loser. That will depend on the outcome of this round's final fight between Side 1 from Diamond Dogs and Side 1 from Hunky Dory. Stay logged in.
