1) Zach didn't play on Outside. That was Sterling.

2) Sterling didn't play on Heathen. That was Matt Chamberlain.

Then they're all good drummers. I guess I confused myself with Campbell playing on the Outside album and doing other tours while Zach did the Outside tour and Earthling album. I guess Chamberlain only did the Heathen album and no touring. Theither way, saying who is better than the other isn't the way it should be seen. Bowie, for the most part, always has great drummers in the studio and touring with him, and they all are unique.

Bowie's best drums are on "Low". Every single beat there still sounds as fresh, thrilling and innovative as it did when the album came out some 30 years ago. Well played, well recorded. Groundbreaking. Landmark drums.

And I want to believe that a light's shining through somehow

In reply to:

Yes indeed. Although it can hardly go to the category of traditional drumming due to the way the whole thing was recorded.

Drums as an instrument new [re: to_dizzy]

Well, is the question about which songs have the best drum lines, or which drummer is the best?

I don't know enough about drumming to know whether, in an individual song, the drums are written and are played as they're written or the drummer has freedom. That is critical to the answer to the question.

If it's about the drums apart from the drummer, than it's about the songwriter(s), not the drummer. I mean, I assume that a competent drummer can execute a drum line (what the hell do you call it, anyway?) regardless of their ability or creativity as a drummer.

I am extremely fond of drummers, my favorites being Neal Peart of Rush, Stuart Copeland of The Police, Keith Moon of The Who, and Ryan Lacey of Gaelic Storm. Each of those drummers were also songwriters to some extent, except for Keith Moon who it is well-known was given a great deal of freedom by the songwriter (Pete Townshend, mostly).

I've also recently developed a great affection for Mick Fleetwood, having seen him live last week. He LOVES playing the drums, and feels that instrument as much as any guitarist or saxophonist has feeling.

This is a stream of consciousness post. Take from it what you will.

Sometimes I feel the need to move on. So I pack a bag and move on.

How was it recorded? Sounds like the drums were from a different song (at least).

Re: Unforgettable Bowie drums new [re: tofuescape]

They recorded all other instruments (and vocals as well I think) and the drums were the last instrument to be added, which gave Davies the ability to do completely freeform drumming (usually drums are one of first instruments to be recorded of course).

Aynsley Dunbar is really really bad. Far to tricky for my liking.
