I think the worst thing about Tin Machine was letting the other band members contribute to the lyrics:
"They're just a bunch of buttheads, with assholes for their brains." Bowie would never write such poor lyrics.

I wonder if Bowie would have gotten as much crap for the Tin Machine albums if they had been released as his own solo albums? I mean I think they'd be seen as among his best work if they were just David Bowie albums. Sorry, didn't really have anything to do with this thread.

Well, 'Crack City' was supposedly *only* written by Bowie but I've probably gazed straight at the credit sheet when I heard that line too. It's very uncharacteristic of him and on the whole, the album represents his worst collection of lyrics since his debut.
There is that Storytellers joke where Bowie points out the (apparently awful) line "my girl calls my name, Hi Dave......" and later says "we're not even going to look at Tin Machine lyrics". Gabrels responds "we can look at who wrote them".

Oh okay, I'm wrong then, but in my mind I saw Hunt Sales coming up with that line.

If I'm being honest I was thinking the same thing, but shortly after the fade there is yet another "HEAVENS IN HERE!!!!!" and another break down which I felt the song simply did not need, followed by more ear-killing guitars

The 4:17 min edit has had all the ear-killing guitars removed. It turned out to be a great song. It would have been a great follow-up single to Under the god. It would also have made a great bonus track or better still, it should have replaced the album version on the reissues.
The promo CD appears on Ebay occasionally (my copy won't). It is worth picking up if you see it listed.

What about an edit of "Sorry" - 3:29 of complete silence?

That's how I rejigged my version of TMII (firstly on cassette). I redid the CD minus Sorry. So hadn't heard the track for about 18 years. When I recently listened to the outtakes that were just labeled by track numbers, a song I didn't recognise came on. I thought it sounded ok, till the vocals started and I realised what it was, so I quickly skipped the track. Might make a good instrumental.
