Elton/Billy Joel swapped headlining on their double bill tour around this time.
to answer this a little more officially, i believe reznor has gone on record to claim he wasn't comfortable with his idol opening for him, even though his label and general common sense pointed otherwise.
it's really a shame most walked out after nine inch nails. i hope some of those mopey kids are kicking themselves right about now.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what "it" was. Now, what I'm with isn't it, and what's "it" seems weird and scary to me.
