Walter Tevis: "Win"

Hi. Many of you know Walter Tevis as the author of The Man Who Fell To Earth. What many do not realize is he also wrote The Hustler, a book that became the movie starring Paul Newman.

In the book The Hustler, Fast Eddie has an epiphany in his final duel with Minnesota Fats. Eddie realizes "all he has to do is win." Before this, Eddie had merely been trying to survive and play a good game against the legendary Fat Man.

I feel that Eddie's epiphany may have inspired Bowie's song, "Win." I wonder if any of you have the Walter Tevis book, The Hustler on hand, can you quote Eddie's final realization, the one that causes him to "win?"

That's true. I particularly like the lines:

Slow down, let someone love you
Ohh, I've never touched you since I started to feel
If there's nothing to hide me
Then you've never seen me hanging naked and wired

which refreance the hot (downplayed in the film) sexual relationship going on between the Paul Newman and Jackie Gleason sexual men.

Non importa quanto si aspetta,ma chi si aspetta.

My thesis is supported by the Young Americans album. The term "Hustler" does appear on the album, in the song, Young Americans.

The song title "Somebody Up There Likes Me" is a reference from another Paul Newman movie.

I was going to say that 'The Hustler' was a working title for YA but it's actually 'The Gouster'. Well, they sound quite similar.

It also leads me to another working title - 'Shilling The Rubes'. This is circus slang for taking money off people....so some relation to hustling.
