The secret songwriting skills of Dara and Emilio
|
|
|
You might recall that back in 1999, Bowie held a songwriting contest in which fans (or otherwise) would submit verses for the song sketch 'What's Really Happening?'.
The winner of course was Alex Grant who got a day in the studio with the daddy, a co-songwriting credit and a load of cash.
But no one really knew the Alex guy - he wasn't a fan. More interesting was that after the runner ups, Bowie singled out 4 others for their "outstanding contributions". At least 3 of these are/were prominent TWers:
1. Dara O Kearney 2. Emilio Pacheco 3. Toshiya Takaoka 4. Hannah Aki Hawkins
When do we get to hear these outtakes?

I wonder if they are allowed to post their lyrical contributions here, or does Bowie now own the copyright which would prevent them from sharing their lyrics with us?

Better late than never, thank you for your interest, Adam. Although I don't think my lyrics were that bad, I do think the fact that I used to be a BowieNet regular at the time might have helped. But I vaguely remember Dara's lyrics as being head and shoulders above all others, including Alex Grant's. My opinion, anyway.
Does David own my lyrics? Well, he'd better do something with them, then! Otherwise, I don't see why I shouldn't post them here:
Life goes on outside my room Nothing happens here The computer and the net Bring the whole world near Even though there’s plenty there Sites and sounds for all I just browse an empty page Staring at the wall
I stay idle for a while In my lonely game The screensaver of my mind Starts to flash your name
I rebuilt my world for you Show me some respect How I wish the phone would ring As I disconnect

Knowing Dara I am sure they were. Any assumptions why he didn't win?

Bowie probably didn't want to share a writing credit with a woman. He's old school like that.

"The Loneliest Guy" maybe?

Thanks Emilio.
GPup might be right with 'The Loneliest Guy' assertion.
Here begins the theory - all of Bowie's post 1999 lyrics are written by fans.

Remade/Remodeled: Dara is a guy!
As for his lyrics not being chosen, one thought that did cross my mind at the time was that, since BowieNet is headquartered in the United States, they probably chose to restrict the winners to people living in that country. That would save a lot of trouble with customs, foreign policies and overseas plane tickets. I do think Alex Grant's lyrics are cool, certainly way better than mine, but Dara not even making it to the top 5 really made me suspicious.

Hello, Nice thread!! That brings something up I've been wanting to know, do any of you remember that fantastic version of 'What's really Happening' that came out with histrionic vocals (a la It's no Game), I don't remember the name of the singer, but he sounded exactly like Bowie? Is it still available?
Also is it possible to view Dara's lyrics?
Thanks, D.
