The 1999 CONTAMINATION track listing hoaxer new [re: ]

Was he/she ever revealed?

As it is widely understood, the unreleased album Contamination (the fabled sequel to Outside) was to revolve around incurable diseases and 17th century Indonesian pirates (moving backwards and forwards between the 17th and 21st centuries).

Contamination was to be in collaboration with Brian Eno (as on Outside) but no other musicians (unlike Outside) because as Bowie said, the music was "going to be so avant-garde that I didn't want to lay it on my band!". However, in 1998 it was rumored that Trent Reznor had been drafted into the project, and also Goldie.

In March 1999, an anonymous hoaxer made up a track listing for Contamination and posted it on the Internet:

1. segue - A Brief Inquisition (0:45)

2. Contamination (5:13)

3. Ebola Jazz (4:28)

4. A Fragmented Line (2:06)

5. The Hive Of No Desire (5:33)

6. segue - The Mad Ramblings of Long Beard (1:15)

7. Ill Refute (5:06)

8. A Tribe From The Ghost Plains (4:33)

9. Drawing A Blank (3:48)

10. Mausoleum (4:25)

11. Serengeti Song (7:34)

12. segue - The Fever Is Still (0:32)

13. Dream Child (5:52)

14. Crazed In The Hot-Zone (4:51)

15. Wiredlife (3:03)

16. Verona No More (3:55)

17. The Only Part Of My Days (4:43)

Some pretty good spoof song titles I would say. Perhaps too good. What do you think? A bit contrived or pretty much spot on?

These could be titles from any Eno project in the late 90's. It's well done but the run times make me think that it's probably a hoax - or better yet, a creative exercise by a fan.

Track 6 is an awful title, but generally I agree with you!
You can't really say Bowie hasn't had time to sift through these recordings so I hope they get released sometime.

How can it start with a segue? By definition, a segue is a transition between two things.

I suppose you could argue that it's a segue between 1. Outside and 2. Contamination.

I love the fake Contamination song-titles (not to mention the fake inlay, lyrics and diary), and have already used 2, 3, 5, 6, 15 and 16 as room-names in my Manic Miner and Jet Set Willy games, with plans to use the others in future games.

I really hope Contamination will be completed and released one day (preferably by David himself before he dies), because it's the greatest album that never was.

I'm pretty sure there was a William Burroughs book with a plot kinda like that. Ghost of Chance, I think it was.

Re: the greatest album that never was new [re: Monkeyboy]

I believe Contamination is the best album that has never been released, considering that Outside is, in my opinion, the greatest album of all time.

One day, someone will sift through the many hours of raw material for Contamination that exist in David's vaults, and piece together another 70m+ album.

I really hope that David himself will be that person, rather than die and leave it to someone else, like J.R.R. Tolkien with The Silmarillion.

Re: the greatest album that never was new [re: abroad]

Good to see you here Dr. Broad.

In creating a setting of rock improvisation, it is hard to think of ground more fertile than having these people together in the one place at the one time:

(As we know, he wrote songs during the Berlin Trilogy virtually "live on mic". Who else could work so quick and so well in the studio?).

(Bringing his Oblique Strategies and numerous other improvisational and collaborative techniques and experience).

(Suddenly - during Outside - everything gelled to a tee. Years of guitar improvisation payed off when he was let loose on this album).

(Bringing the rare ability to improvise complex classical music at his fingertips with almost no pre-conception. The upper echelons of musical genius).

What a hideous shame this album remains unreleased. There would have been nothing else like it.

The planet is glowing.
