That is true. But to pick a more contamporary example, Oldfield's 1979 live Exposed album includes a version of Tubular Bells (Part 1) that clocks at 28.42 and fills one side of the album.

In the US Man Of Words / Man Of Music was released with a somewhat similar cover that has a blue backround without the bubbles.
That's the one I was thinking of.

Also, I think it's actually possible to queeze 30 minutes on one side of a vinyl. Mike Oldfield's 60-minute Amarok was released on vinyl, simply cut to half without any editing.
The problem with vinyl though was if you tried to put more than 15 minutes on each side, the sound quality and volume degraded, that's why only compilations and best of albums generally ran for more than that.
Also I remember listening to an interview with an Australian record producer in the late 70s and he said they always tried to place the best or most popular tracks in position 1 or 2 on each side as the sound quality progressively deteriorated towards the centre of the disc.

Supposing that's true, it would probably help explain why most singles were lifted from the first few tracks, although Fame is a rather unusual anomaly in that regard.

the whole final track-order of that album is an anomaly. Ideally, "Fame" would have been released as a stand-alone single with "Across the Universe" as the B-side. It would make more sense than haivng them on what would have been The Gouster since they have more in common with each otehr (Lennon) than with anything else on the album.
GDE get dukewhite to Europe Twelve just wasn't enough!
