2 CD Limited Editions of Outside, Earthling, Hours new

From Bowienet:

We first mentioned the Sony double disc versions of 1.Outside, Earthling and 'hours...', way back in April of last year. (04.25.2003 NEWS: SONY REISSUES: THE FACTS) Well, I'm happy to report that the folx at Sony have stayed true to their word and intend to reissue the three albums on September 27th, complete with bonus discs. Here's how I described the reissues in that original news item over a year ago:

These bonus discs will contain a dozen or so songs each, and the tracks will be drawn from rare and hard-to-find releases and promos. They will not contain unreleased and unfinished versions of tracks...

And, sure enough that's exactly what you'll be getting. Many of these tracks have not had a CD release before now and have only been available on hard to find promos and the like. I'll be posting a complete breakdown of the bonus disc tracks and where they originated from shortly. (See track listings below)

The albums will be available to buy separately or all three together as a slipcase edition, as in the picture above. Each of the albums will be packaged in the DigiBook style that the recent EMI releases, such as Diamond Dogs, have favoured. The booklets have been expanded slightly to include the bonus track details and some additional photos.

The separately available albums will only be available for one pressing, when they're gone, they're gone. The slipcase edition will be a numbered limited edition, limited to just two thousand copies.

On a final note, I know this is the third version of these releases around the world over the last year, but I have said all along that there would be double disc versions available too... including when I announced the single disc US versions back in February. (02.15.2004 NEWS: SONY RE-ISSUES FOR AMERICA) So, for those of you, like me, that need to own every version (Hi Keiths) please keep your grumbles to yourself... we were warned!

If, however, you've never owned these albums on CD, these are the ones to get. You should save yourselves a couple of hundred quid not having to shell out for those rare and very pricey original vinyls and promos.

Here are those bonus disc track listings...

Amazon.de says that September 27 is the probable release date for the individual Double CDs. Pre-order price is 16,49.

Am I gonna buy it? Don't think so.

And the limited edition will be hard to come by.

And I want to believe

Well, I have to say I welcome this news. I've been holding off buying CD versions of these albums (I bought them on tape, originally because I didn't own a CD player in the mid-nineties (poor student) and my main music delivery system was my Walkman) for over a year now waiting for these new versions to come out. I do already own some but by no means all of the bonus tracks on various CD singles I've acquired since but these will round out the collection nicely.

Get in there!

Re: 2 CD Limited Editions of Outside, Earthling, Hours new [re: Adam]

For me, these collections come as a pleasant surprise (although realistically the 2 CD+DVD edition of Black Tie White Noise was a good indicator).

First and foremost, they look comprehensive - covering all the B-sides from the era as well as a decent slab of remixes. An interesting study will be to use Ruud's Discography to determine what exactly is missing in terms of remixes (the reissue of BTWN for instance didn't include all 20 or so remixes of the title track......but in honesty that would have been far too punishing).

Some specifics:

Omikron/Nomad Soul tracks - the inclusion of these tracks are VERY interesting to say the least (their first ever CD release). Fans with a knowledge of bootlegs, however, will know that a few Bowie/Gabrels penned tracks have been left off.

A small gripe - I would have liked the original (Showgirls) version of 'I'm Afraid of Americans' to be on the Outside bonus disc (rather than the Earthling one) seeing it was from those sessions. This, however, is the fault of the overall reissue program as I believe in staying true to the recording sessions/era rather than including 'related songs' such as the Arnold Corns tracks on the 30th Anniversary of Ziggy.

Overall verdict: I will buy them.

I'll probably buy end up buing Hours, I really liked the Omikron versions of the songs when I herad them some years ago while playing the game.
Anyway, even though these releases don't really excite me all that much it's pleasant to see such quality (and quantity) on track selections.

I think I'll end up buying Hours too, because that's the only one of the three I still have only on CD-R, copied from a friend. I think it actually might be cool to own the two others too but... I think I've been spending way too much money on Bowie-stuff recently.

Hello humans can you feel me thinking

Much nicer than the ones released earlier this year, I hope I'll be able to get these, as there are things on each release I haven't got.

Believe everything I say, especially the lies.

Indeedy they most certainly are, still im pleased I bought t'others also ( except Outside ) the box is very sophisticated and much more in line with Bowie-esque designs, i adore the minimalism approach to the packaging

Im on the look out for these, will let you as soon as I see them anywhere ( for pre-ordering UK based ) ok Pablo?

Have 2-3 of the tracks on the bonus discs actually never surfaced before? Beck Mix #2? Stigmata film only version?

Anybody else doing a slight grimace at the thought of listening to 3-4-5 remixes of the same song in a row?

Will the SRP be in-line with the DD 30th for the doubles and the S/V set for the silver box?

Yeah, the Stigmata film-only version has me curious. Who here has seen the film?

On paper, the Hours set looks the most appealing for the track rarities and the overall quantity.
