There's already a WATCHMEN film in pre-production at Paramount with Paul Greengrass directing, he of the Bourne Supremacy. It's scheduled to be released in 2006.

Exactly, and Aronofsky was supposed to be the director before Greengrass. He quit because the studio was rushing him. According to CBR, it was while Aronofsky was working in the pre-production of the film that Bowie met with him and told him he was working on a project based on the same source. Supposedly, this encouraged Aronofsky to get the movie right, because, to quote him in the article, "if I do this and fuck it up I'll piss David Bowie off!".

Not rumours anymore:

[Aronofsky] also mentioned that David Bowie's "Space Oddity" influenced the future storyline. (At this point he revealed that the production is trying to get Bowie to do a third Major Tom song for "The Fountain.")

Very interesting. Sounds like Bowie's involvement (in the 'opera') is separate to that of the film....with the exception of the new Major Tom song if it pans out.

Actually, the song would be for the movie "The Fountain". Aronofsky isn't working on Watchmen anymore, Paul Greengrass is.
Aronofsky had been working on Watchmen for some years, so it's possible that he talked to Bowie years ago, and nothing came out of his little fixation with the comic book.

I fully recommend Watchmen, by the way, especially if you've never read a 'serious' comic book. It shattered every preconception regarding mainstream comics when it came out in 1986, spawning a wave of 'dark' comics (all inferior to the original), and I get the feeling something similar will happen with the movie in relation to other comic book movies. It should be avaliable in tradepaperback in Amazon.

And did [seeing "The Pillowman" in Broadway] stir up some Broadway juices [for Bowie]? "Actually, that has occurred to me. We'll see what the future brings." And would the future be bringing him in a musical? "I'm not saying."

Well, Bowie sounds like an unlikely hopeful, but thanks just the same. I had the pleasure of meeting Clint Mansell ac ouple years ago and had no idea what he was up to other than the PWEI shows. His webpage is horridly out of date ('03). Obviously the man has been busy with good stuff.
Incidentally, Clint worked with Miles Hunt (Wonder Stuff) on the 11:14 s/t.
It is my opinion and I am unanimous in this, because it is my opinion, which is, in fact, mine.

In reply to:
[On "The Fountain"] I don't really remember the whole evolution of the idea. I mean, it's very much like Pi in that when I write an original it's kind of more of a tapestry. I'll take different threads from different ideas and weave a carpet of cool ideas together. So I was reading something about the conquistadors. There's a book by Bernal Diaz called The Conquest of Spain. He was one of Cortez's foot soldiers and he wrote a story. It's an amazing book. I read that. The space stuff I think was influenced a little bit by Space Oddity by David Bowie and that's probably why the character was named Tom.
DRE: Did you talk to Bowie about doing some music?
ARONOFSKY: Yeah, well not music, but hopefully a third Major Tom song. It'd be cool. He's working with Clint [Mansell] our composer. So we're talking and hopefully that'll happen.
Apparently Darren has the same set of answers for all interviewers...

The funny thing is that when I went to meet Bowie, one of the first things he said was, “Oh, are you doing Watchmen?" It turned out that he was developing an opera out of Watchmen. I was like, “If I do this film and I fuck it up, I'm going to piss David Bowie off.”

Thanks for your reseach, Mxy. These are the first rumblings since the Reality Tour that Bowie is working on something musical so it's definitely significant news. Let's hope something comes of this.
