Bowie/Aronofsky/Mansell rumours

http://www.aintitcool.com/display.cgi?id=19803

I first read about Aronofsky (director of Pi and Requiem for a Dream) claiming Bowie told him he was planning a Watchmen rock opera on April Fool's, so I assumed it was a joke (though the website claimed it wasn't). Now another website mentions this, on an article about a visit to the set of Aronofsky's new sci-fi movie "The Fountain", and adds a rather odd rumour about a collaboration between Bowie and Clint Mansell. This isn't an entirely reliable website, being a rumours-site, but they're often right.

Here's the important part:

In reply to:

I couldn’t help but dig into some seriously spoilery material with everyone, and they were all surprisingly forthcoming. We heard some cool news about David Bowie, who is working with Mansell to write a new Major Tom song for the end of the film. His “Space Oddity” was one of the things that first inspired Aronofsky, and the way he portrays the desolation of deep space travel certainly calls that song to mind. We also learned that Bowie grilled Aronofsky about his involvement with WATCHMEN. Turns out Bowie’s working on a rock opera version of WATCHMEN on his own, although details about that production are still tentative.

I've often thought we hadn't seen the end of Major Tom, as far as I know the character was never killed off just abandoned to float in space forever more.

I'd be very interesting to hear a Bowie/Mansell collaboration. It may just be a remix of a new song Mansell is working on, nothing with Bowie directly. Also I doubt it would have anything to do with Major Tom (some ignorant reviews of the Underworld soundtrack talked about Disco King as being about the spaceman too).

As for the Watchman thing, it's 100% April Fools. I saw that blurb about the rock opera on the 1st as well, and now they're just self referencing their own rumours - it's not coming from a separate independent source afterall. I wouldn't pay any heed to it.

I'm still looking forward to The Fountain whether Bowie has any hand it or not.

Alright, but maybe not so reliable in April 1st. It just seems to me that rock operas went out with the Cold War and slap-bracelets, although someone forgot to tell Queen that.

I didn't know you were into the geek niche, mxy. A couple months ago I skimmed through Wizard at a bookstore for the first time since high school. I've really been disconnected for a while, I read that Hal Jordan was coming back and I thought the sky was about to fall.

It's a madhouse.

No way is this true! I heard him say in an interview in 2004 (looking very serious) that he'd been approached by several people to make a rock musical but had said no on account of finding the genre boring and embarrassing!

He did say that he might do something like a touring rock theatre, not revealing what on earth that could be...

Why? Aronofsky pretty succinctly sums up for me all that is trite and shallow in American "arty" cinema right now. Oh look, jerky camera! Oh wow, marvel at those rapid-fire cuts, kids!! Where have I seen those before? Oh yeah, right, MTV.

Aronofsky tends to deliver whatever message he's trying to push with all the style and subtlety of a rock hard pedophile slamming it into 8 year old ass. Without lubrication.

That's what I thought, but they haven't denied anything and the rest of the news that day are too boring to be fake. Plus, they're currently posting a more in depht report of their visit to the set of "The Fountain"... No mention of Bowie yet, but the interviews should be posted soon and I'm hoping to find something there.

Anyway, knowing Bowie I don't think this will ever happen, it's probably and idea that floated through his mind like many others. I just think it's cool that he likes the comic book.

I haven't bought anything new in over a year (I'm slowly buying backissues Strangers in Paradise and Moore's ABC line), but I keep in touch through news-sites like CBR or Newsarama. Jordan is indeed back, and it turns out Parallax was just a space parasite that took over him. Another returning character is Jason Todd, believe it or not. Nothing is sacred anymore. Next thing you know Barry Allen will be running out of his grave.

There's already a WATCHMEN film in pre-production at Paramount with Paul Greengrass directing, he of the Bourne Supremacy. It's scheduled to be released in 2006.

Re: Bowie/Aronofsky/Mansell rumours new [re: Stagger_Lee]

Exactly, and Aronofsky was supposed to be the director before Greengrass. He quit because the studio was rushing him. According to CBR, it was while Aronofsky was working in the pre-production of the film that Bowie met with him and told him he was working on a project based on the same source. Supposedly, this encouraged Aronofsky to get the movie right, because, to quote him in the article, "if I do this and fuck it up I'll piss David Bowie off!".

Actually, the song would be for the movie "The Fountain". Aronofsky isn't working on Watchmen anymore, Paul Greengrass is.

Aronofsky had been working on Watchmen for some years, so it's possible that he talked to Bowie years ago, and nothing came out of his little fixation with the comic book.

I fully recommend Watchmen, by the way, especially if you've never read a 'serious' comic book. It shattered every preconception regarding mainstream comics when it came out in 1986, spawning a wave of 'dark' comics (all inferior to the original), and I get the feeling something similar will happen with the movie in relation to other comic book movies.
It should be avaliable in tradepaperback in Amazon.

Well, Bowie sounds like an unlikely hopeful, but thanks just the same. I had the pleasure of meeting Clint Mansell ac ouple years ago and had no idea what he was up to other than the PWEI shows. His webpage is horridly out of date ('03). Obviously the man has been busy with good stuff.

Incidentally, Clint worked with Miles Hunt (Wonder Stuff) on the 11:14 s/t.

It is my opinion and I am unanimous in this, because it is my opinion, which is, in fact, mine.

In reply to:

[On "The Fountain"] I don't really remember the whole evolution of the idea. I mean, it's very much like Pi in that when I write an original it's kind of more of a tapestry. I'll take different threads from different ideas and weave a carpet of cool ideas together. So I was reading something about the conquistadors. There's a book by Bernal Diaz called The Conquest of Spain. He was one of Cortez's foot soldiers and he wrote a story. It's an amazing book. I read that. The space stuff I think was influenced a little bit by Space Oddity by David Bowie and that's probably why the character was named Tom.

DRE: Did you talk to Bowie about doing some music?

ARONOFSKY: Yeah, well not music, but hopefully a third Major Tom song. It'd be cool. He's working with Clint [Mansell] our composer. So we're talking and hopefully that'll happen.

Apparently Darren has the same set of answers for all interviewers...

Oh fucking cool! I had no idea that a Watchmen movie was in production. I love Alan Moore and have recently been re-reading the Swamp Thing books (just finsished the bit where he turns Gotham City into a jungle, and beats up Batman until they release Abby from prison. Then he get's shot with the weapon that Lex Luthor designed. Can't wait for the next bit!). Thanks for the info.

Another Moore movie in pre-production is V for Vendetta, adapted and produced by the Wachowskis... http://vforvendetta.warnerbros.com/
I don't know what to expect from them after the last two Matrix movies (and I don't know what to expect from Hollywood after the last two Moore "adaptations"), but what gives me faith in this project is that apparently one of the Wachowski brothers (the fully male one) talked with Moore about the project and got his approval. Moore usually dissaproves Hollywood adaptations of his work (he asked that his name was removed from "Constantine", and declined getting money for it), so if he liked the V for Vendetta proposal it can't be that bad.

Just rumours after all. new [re: Mxy]

From Bowienet today stating that indeed there will be NO resurrection of Major Tom still it was a nice thought.

Millions weep a fountain...

Had a few e-mails regarding DB's involvement with a rock opera version of Alan Moore's comic Watchmen and a new version of Space Oddity for Darren Aronofsky's upcoming movie, The Fountain.

It seems the rumours were started online by a Montreal set visit report from The Fountain by Moriarty on the Ain't It Cool News website, from where, this excerpt:

"We heard some cool news about David Bowie, who is working with Mansell to write a new Major Tom song for the end of the film. His “Space Oddity” was one of the things that first inspired Aronofsky, and the way he portrays the desolation of deep space travel certainly calls that song to mind. We also learned that Bowie grilled Aronofsky about his involvement with WATCHMEN. Turns out Bowie’s working on a rock opera version of WATCHMEN on his own, although details about that production are still tentative."

Well, plainly put, David Bowie definitely isn't involved with a rock opera version of Watchmen, even if such a thing is happening. And, as much as the Space Oddity re-record is a nice idea, (I still love the beautifully sparse remake that graced the B-side of the 1980 Alabama Song 7" single) Major Tom is not about to be reawakened from his deep space slumber.

However, the good news is that Aronofsky has asked David to write a song for the movie...so fingers crossed, kidz. Give me a new song over a remake any day...well, 99 out of a hundred days.

Re: Lies, Damned Lies And B.Net News new [re: diamondogz74]

Ain't It Cool News wasn't the only site to report this rumour... There's also ComicBookResources and SuicideGirls. The latter had an interview with Aronofsky where he confirmed that Bowie and Clint Mansell are working together in what might be a new Major Tom song, and that, at one point, Bowie had plans to adapt Watchmen into a rock opera.

I think what happened is that when Bowie first met with Aronofsky to talk about making a song for The Fountain, Bowie found out Aronofsky was also involved (at the time) in the Watchmen adaptation and mentioned the rock opera idea (which made Aronofsky go into panic, because, according to him, if he fucked the movie up Bowie would be pissed). This was probably just a crazy idea that flew through his mind for a second to be forgotten instantly.

The significance, at least for me and many other Watchmen fans, is finding out that Bowie likes the comic book enough to fantasize about making a rock opera out of it.
