And as Pablo noted, if it was originally filmed on 4:3 (which I presume would be the case, since it was a video release only), the only way to make the format into 16:9 would be cropping stuff from the top and bottom of the screen, which is hardly preferrable.

I don't think so, Bowie being the central character of interest to us as fans, nothing wrong with chopping off a piece of sky/ceiling or audience.

If memory serves (and it's been while since I watched the video) there are close-ups that wouldn't really benifit from cropping of the picture.

It's a long time since I've seen it too, but there are very many clever effects they could use for this if they really wanted to, my guess is they don't give a toss.

just tape two stripes of black paper over your monitor and you'll have a 16:9 picture...

however... it's nice to have three live dvds which each showing different interpretations of the songs - unlike Queen, who have phenomenal live concerts but sound the same every time.

[offtopic]but what really matters is that low isn't released in 5.1 so far. the spheric sound would be perfect for that. but i doubt anybody has the chuzpe to release something like that.[/offtopic]

Are you bad enough?

Re: Picture Format new [re: diamondogz74]

It would be just as bad, to artificially make a widescreen picture out of something which was not filmed like that, as it is to release feature films in 4:3. In both cases the careful filming and framing of the picture is ruined. As Sys notes there are loads of close ups in the concert, if it was cropped you would get some really awful pictures.

Where things can be made better, then make them better, but when in the interest of making things compatible with modern tecniques it is to the detriment of the original medium then it should be left alone.

A but like the awful colourisation that went on in the early 80s.

No I don't think it would, a point in question is Hitchcocks classic masterpiece Vertigo it was filmed in 55mm and restored a few years back to a full widescreen 75mm version, the direction and picture was not affected in anyway, so it can be done.

Yes that was truly awful I agree, I have some of the Laurel and Hardy DVDs and there is the option of viewing in B/W or colourized, I always chose the B/W.

The difference being Ant is that there is a lot more of the picture to play with, with a feature film. The concert was probably only recorded onto videotape, not film, so what you see is what you get.

Yeah since my post about altering 55mm to 75mm I've been checking up on videotape techniques ( especially dated tape ) and the outlook for making that 16.9 is decidedly grim Im afraid still not to worry, I'd love a good 4.3 version if it was done with some respect for it's art form and not just to make that quick buck.

Re: Picture Format new [re: diamondogz74]

Why not release a fullscreen and widescreen version of this concert film on one DVD. Many DVD movies are this way, including Big Trouble in Little China - and it can all fit on one side of the disc(ie: not a double sided "flipper" disc)

I also believe the 16x9 widescreen would need to be approval from Bowie's people - and he seems to have little or no involvement in this reissue.
