Firstly this is great news and about time too, Im not so sure he'll just go along with singing Fashion, Im sure this be a glimpse of the new Bowie, the Bowie that will hopefully tour next year, as for the song he'll sing? well he could just surprise us all with a new song and not "( She Can ) Do That", maybe it's my wishful thinking.

Yeah I know but the eyes of the world will be on him considering this will be his first live performance since his illness, he'll take advantage of this situation and who wouldn't blame him? Is it written in stone only one song per artist, I really hope they let him sing at least three as in Live 8s schedule, or am I being greedy

I admit in my eyes the man is a rock god and always will be, but I remember many of the tabloids taking note of his recent visit to some fashion awards ceremony and that film awards event.

So Mr Bowie still carries some considerable clout.

I happen to know that several users in addition to myself dislike this habit. Some people don't mind it, others do; you can't make a general rule about using or not using people's real names. It might be advisable to use a person's real name only if you know the person in question does not object to your using it.

I've mentioned this before but look at Sinatra, the guy was very old but still had that Charisma, style and fantastic voice, as long as his voice holds out? I can see Bowie going on for a long time yet.

Re: Fashion Rocks new [re: diamondogz74]

To be honest, Sinatra's voice started to go in the mid 80s, my mother has a set of videos and in a concert in 1982 he sings New York New York and hits the high notes at the end, in 1985 in Japan, the whole section is removed as he can no longer hit them. Obviously by this stage Sinatra was getting on so it is no suprise. One day I would like to see Bowie do a final televised concert where he sings a mixture of well loved favourites and some things he has never sung, or rarely sung. Then says, that's it.
Then his memory can be untarnished by comebacks and embarrasing appearances. Dignity is valuable.

Yeah I've got those concerts on DVD, I do know what you mean but boy he still looks the part eh? Only one Sinatra and only one Bowie, he did record two albums with other singers very late in his career and the albums were big hits, you may remember the Duets albums? he recorded a really FAB version of "I've Got You Under My Skin" with Bono and the accompanying video was just brilliant.

Duets Vol.1

Duets Vol.2

Just before he quit touring Frank had 3 teleprompters onstage. He was also doing really bad mistakes like forgetting the chorus to "New York, New York".

I think his family was annoyed that he didn't quit any of his vices.

Similarly, BB King's doctor told him to re-arrange his diet if he wanted to performed for years to come. This meant no more fired chicken.

Sinatra was asked if he would mind that Bowie portrayed him in a film, apparently Sinatra replied back with "Im not having that fucking creepy wierdo fag playing me" I'm sure over the years these words have become exaggerated as do most.

Well, if it's true that some things are worth waiting for, I think you'll agree that David Bowie and The Arcade Fire together onstage would definitely be one of those things. Therefore, you'll just have to wait and see!

Who likes the idea of Bowie performing with the Arcade Fire? and why.

I think Lennon did the very same thing, that and multi-tracked vocals, I've heard Beatles fans say this is because Lennon didn't like his own voice.

It has always been my dream that Bowie recorded an album using Phil Spector as producer or even Brian Wilson, can you imagine the sound? Bowie's vocals would be heaven, one day maybe or is it too late now?

semi-retirement? It's just been over a year. He's gone longer than that before. To you and I who devoted months of our lives to his last tour, I guess it does seem like that to an extent.

As for Arcade Fire, I had heard rumors for some time, but official word is nice. I am excited. While I like AF a reasonable amount, I am mainly excited to hear Bowie with a different band than the one I've heard the last 18 times I've seen him. I don't think a whole show with AF would be good, but for one song, it will be fun. I saw the Flaming Lips play backup to Beck in 2003 and it added an extra element to the music, so I am anxious to see how this effects Bowie.

Is Bowie Arcade Fire's Bitch? new [re: dukewhite]

Duke! I wasn't saying BOWIE is in semi-retirement, I was saying YOU are in semi-retirement given your sparse attendance here at TW. It's good to have you back!

As for Arcade Fire and Bowie teaming up . . . I'm not so thrilled. Here's what I posted about it at BWW after someone suggested how much Arcade Fire would benefit from having Bowie perform with them and how Bowie's "patronage" of the band have benefitted them:
________________________________
OK, I have a different spin on the Bowie/AF thing.

I had read a bunch of very positive (gushing, even) reviews of AF's Funeral in a number of music mags, but what made me go get the album was Bowie's endorsement (gushing as it was, as well).

But the "average" AF fan is not a Bowie fanatic in his/her 40s. So, I highly doubt Bowie's "patronage" has meant squat to AF's young fans.

I'm fine if they team up for one-off thing, but I, like Spidey, don't want to see them mix it up too much together. I adore AF, and I adore Bowie, but I wonder if the PERCEPTION by younger fans (or by cynical Bowie fans) might be along the lines of what many thought when Bowie collaborated with NIN a while back: "There goes Bowie again, the aging rocker affixing himself to the coattails of the up-and-coming hipsters in his relentless and pathetic effort to remain 'relevant'."

I don't want to hear that shit, so I don't want them to team up.

And if Bowie actually SINGS an AF song with AF as backing band on Fashion Rocks, it isn't AF who benefit in my view. It's Bowie. And if he does this, so help me God, much as I love the man, he will be making himself AF's BITCH! If AF provided instrumentation for his performance of one of his OWN songs, that's fine. But if he sings one of THEIR songs, he's merely a "guest vocalist" on a performance that is duly and rightly THEIR performance, not his own.

Re: Is Bowie Arcade Fire's Bitch? new [re: zigbot]

<<gotta be a well known song>>

That's 95% true, but what did Bjork do in 2003?

I think it's going to be a cover song ie: Bowie/Placebo-20th Century Boy, DB/Bono-Gloria, DB/Morrissey-Cosmic Dancer.

I imagine AF will do 2 songs, one alone and one with Bowie. AF are also doing a Letterman appearance the same month.

Zig,

In every article I've seen about AF, Bowie has been mentioned. Bowie was hip to them, perhaps before Funeral was released in North America - I'm not even sure the album had US distribution.

I would say AF have about as much to gain as DB. The saddest thing is I doubt this show would touch AF without a celebrity cameo of some kind. Remember the Grammy's demanding a OK Computer era radiohead do a duet with Bowie?

I cannot recall Leno ever touching an indie(DIY) act as a musical guest.

As for the NIN/DB tour - I would say Bowie was the highlight of the night and few open minded poeple have disputed that. And I've been vocal about Bowie's attempts to remain hip(**moby who?**) I'm in the NIN/Moby demographic.

When I think of vintage rockers trying to be hip, I think of Jimmy Page performing with Lymp Bizzkyt, Santana performing with Everlast or Stevie Wonder performing with Will Smith.

I'd quite forgotten that, I wonder why ( no pun intended ) he feels it necessary to do these bit part acts? the guy is a genius and really doesn't need this baggage around his career.

I thought that record he made with Paul McCartney "Ebony and Ivory" was atroucious, now McCartney has sadly become a joke, I do not want this happening to Stevie Wonder and most definately not to Mr Bowie, Bowie does not need to appear with the AF, I would prefer him to just be himself and not hang around with these 9 day wonder groups.

To be honest with you Alan I couldn't give a toss about crowd pleasers, I'm thinking what would stretch them vocally as an act, If all the acts are performing crowd pleasers to simply perform another would be boring IMO.

Maybe you wouldn't care about crowd pleasers, but with you (and me) he is preaching to the converted, HOWEVER, at this event, there will be a large portion of the audience, who are NOT hard core Bowie fans, and he has to please them as much as us (moreso, as they are in attendance). Five years, although a great song, takes its' time to get going and is (and this isn't putting it down) a bit dirgelike, to the non-converted. Whereas Queen bitch can be a high powered, rocking track, guaranteed to get people excited. If one song is all he has, on his first live appearance in over a year, he wants to make people prick up their ears and put down their flutes of Champagne.

Re: Fashion Rocks new [re: diamondogz74]

Just got back form the show and an afterparty with a ton of Bnetters. It was a lame show overall, but that's to be expected from any multi-artist extravaganza coming out of the states these days. there was very little rocking, and even less fashion. Anyway, after suffering through Destiny's Child and Joss Stone and Rob Thomas, Bowie came on. First he did an amazing version of Life on Mars? with just him and Mike Garson. Absolutely stunning. Then there were some other artists and I was bored. Then Arcade Fire and Bowie performed Five Years and it was wonderful to hear the classic with the new instrumentation brought by AF's various constituants (mainly the violins and cello.) I thought that would be it, but then they did the AF song Wake Up with Bowie singing lead. It was the highlight of the night and definitely the song that rocked the most. I feel bad for AF, though. In what I think is their first US television performance, they don't even sing their own song--one of the most established artists around does it instead. I hope they get the recognition they deserve from it, though. After that it was pretty much crap. I hung around to see Billy Idol, but he was a major disappointment. It's worth watching on tv, but I'd advise taping it and fastforwarding through everything but Bowie, Duran Duran, Gwen Stefani, and maybe Shakira, if only t osee her shake her sexy thang. I will have it recorded and on DVD (assuming all goes well with the recording) if anyone can't see it and wants to.

Oliver Twist new [re: bowiefanpeter]

I am over the moon that Bowie is back, not only back but back in FULL BOWIE swing, he decides to enter into Oliver Twist character for "Life On Mars?" this is the BOWIE i've been wanting for some time, not the reality, but the surreal where he belongs

You better look out below!

David Bowie returned to the concert stage this evening for the Fashion Rocks show at Radio City Music Hall in New York, and he stole the show with trademark cool and unmatched passion.

First up, Alicia Keys introduced our man for an emotionally charged rendition of Life On Mars?. His voice sounded stronger than ever and he looked strangely surreal, but nevertheless stunning with a blackened right eye and a bandaged left hand.

David was dressed in a charcoal grey suit by new American designer, Thom Browne, with matching grey tie and white shirt and a stars n stripes lapel pin. (see detail below, all pix kindly supplied by Kevin Mazur of WireImage.com) The overall strangeness of David's appearance was completed with trousers that don't go quite all the way down...you know, Oliver Twist length.

Mike Garson accompanied DB for this sublime performance of Life On Mars?, which echoed the similarly brilliant version the pair performed at the Yahoo Internet Music Awards in July 2000. David and Mike left the stage to thunderous applause and a standing ovation, leaving no doubt that Bowie was back in tremendous style.

IIRC,he went to college in Montreal, but originated from Texas.

I was curious as to what part of Texas.

The violinist is from Vancouver.

I also find the choice of "Wake Up" interesting since it wasn't one of their first 2 singles/videos. But it was used as the warm up song before u2 hits the stage this year.

2 out of 3 new [re: Claude]

So they left Five Years out of the televised broadcast. Good thing they had the time to still include the Joss Stone/Rob Thomas duet. If it hadn't been for Bowie and my having been at the taping, I would have turned that shit off almost immediately. Mark McGrath and Poppy Montgmery were the worst hosts I've ever seen for any events like this. What a shambles. Bowie was wonderful, though, and I guess that makes it ok.

I have the show on DVD, like I mentioned I might, if anyone wants to see it that didn't get a chance.

I sorta can see the elephant man element, but more like his bow to the designer and prob his kid watching at home, and the 'weight' of the shoes.

For some reason what struck me was the similarity to alex in clockwork orange (werent his pants that short?) . also it looks like he's wearing stockings (which tons of stage musos do apparently to keep warm) but with DB a bit of a drag show... (!) gosh its good hearing mike garson eh!!

Hi Claude,

I think it's in reference to the meterological/sociological/political disaster stirred up by Hurricane Katrina - America's all battered and bruised. And the Oliver Twist/flood pants (as someone mentioned on this HUGE thread) are perhaps a reference to poverty, given many of the victims of the crisis were poor. ???

I am hugely excited by what he is doing now, I hope it's just the beginning! Not only does he act and look fantastic, his voice is sounding superb!

Thank you Pablo for posting the thread, I was moping round the house yesterday trying to imagine him doing Wake Up so was thrilled when a friend alerted me to your thread today!

Re: Why??? new [re: Claude]

Safe isn't a toy song, it was recorded for the rugrats soundtrack but was subsequently not used, it was then rerecorded for Heathen but used as a b side. The only Heathen B sides from Toy are;
You got a habit of leaving me,
Baby loves that way,
Shadowman,
Conversation piece..

Afraid and Slip away were also from Toy.

The Toy songs are as follows;

Afraid: has appeared on Heathen.

Baby Loves That Way: released on the Japanese 'Slow Burn' (Sony SICP-162) and UK and EC 'Everyone Says 'Hi' CD single (ISO/Columbia 673134 5 and ISO/Columbia COL 673076 2).

Conversation Piece: appeared on the bonus disc of the 2CD edition of Heathen.

Hole In The Ground: remains unreleased.

I Dig Everything: remains unreleased.

In The Heat of the Morning: remains unreleased.

Karma Man: remains unreleased.

Let Me Sleep Beside You: remains unreleased.

London Boys, The: in July 2002, a 1'26" excerpt was issued as a "secret B-side" on a section of BowieNet dedicated to Heathen, followed in August by another 1'30" excerpt. As the latter is faded out, both pieces still do not cover the entire song.

Shadow Man: included on both EC editions of the 'Slow Burn' CD-single (ISO/Columbia COL 672744 1 and COL 672744 2) and on the UK 'Everyone Says 'Hi'' single (ISO/Columbia 673134 3).

Toy: this track was later offered as a free download (re-titled 'Your Turn To Drive') to customers who ordered their copy of Reality online from HMV.

Uncle Floyd: this song was re-recorded for Heathen as 'Slip Away'; the Toy version remains unreleased.

You've Got a Habit Of Leaving: featured on the EC 'Slow Burn' (ISO/Columbia COL 672744 2) and UK 'Everyone Says 'Hi' singles (ISO/Columbia 673134 5).

Toy could be released anytime if Bowie chose? It wouldn't necessarily be his next album, more a treasure we all ( most of us ) would love to own.

On the subject of the sixties, how do gays have a 69er? Whoever was on the bottom would surely choke to death.

Great news, just have to wait for it to reach our tvs, there's a very strong rumour going round that Bowie will play live with the AF in central park this coming thursday?

From Bowienet...

Tickets are still available, and any BowieNetters in the area may want to attend - not just because Arcade Fire are such a magical live experience, but also because you just never know who might be the band's special guest!

You mean at the Fashion Rocks? apart from "Five Years" and "Wake up" both with Bowie, I have no idea what song they performed on their own or if they did even?

Love to be in Central Park tonight, I just know Bowie's gonna be there he can't resist performing now he's started again.

I saw fashion Rocks last friday - just like the rest of america.

Arcade Fire played letterman last night and were great. They did their first video song(their titles are impossible to remember)

Letterman and shaffer were actually blown away themselves and remarked about it afterwards - the seemed genuinely impressed.

MIKE GARSON TALKS ABOUT FASHION ROCKS new [re: Pablo-Picasso]

He's in the best selling show...

One of the nicest surprises of David's appearance at Fashion Rocks last week, (09.08.2005 NEWS: BOWIE STEALS THE SHOW AT FASHION ROCKS) was the beautiful rendition of Life On Mars? Part of its beauty is the simplicity of the arrangement, in that it is one vocal and one piano... But, what a singer and what a pianist!

I asked Mike Garson what it meant to him to have been a part of the performance:

"To play on a concert grand piano with David alone was an incredible feeling. I found that experience to be a very spiritual moment. It's hard to say why, but I felt blessed and honored to be in that space with David for those precious five minutes at Radio City Music Hall. I'm still savoring the moment.

We had played there with The Spiders From Mars in February 1973 and did a band version of Life On Mars? then. I remember Mick Ronson's inspiring solo in the middle and I always strive to get a similar essence. But, it's hard, as the piano is no guitar!

I found myself not being the usual flamboyant Mike Garson, but more in a surrender and truly supportive role. Maybe as I get older the old saying less is more is really true. I know I was good at the opposite! (lol)"

There ya go. David Bowie's longest-serving sideman and he still gets as big a kick from performing with David now as he did back in 1972. Thanx for that Mike.

Bowie Interview. new [re: Pablo-Picasso]

Have you all read this interview ( thanks BWW ) with Bowie?

Bowie comes across as being rather flippant and not giving a toss about much, perhaps it was the interviewer?

Re: Why??? new [re: Shoes]

For some reason what struck me was the similarity to alex in clockwork orange

Kudos for spotting this - in the meantime I guess we all read the interview where it is mentioned that this was in fact A Clockwork Orange look. I had never the idea before that Life On Mars could
be referring to Kubrick, but now I realize that with some fantasy one
could read this into the song.

I just now watched the video of Life On Mars - and I found it most important that this is again a boy's look - continuing the theme from
Reality's cover. Then on the other hand the schoolboy's look also reminds me of Celliers' younger brother in Furyo. So Bowie is continuing the kid phase of Nietzsche's Uebermensch transformation - which is again a reference to a Kubrick movie.

I like this self referentialism in Bowie's work - somehow this guy is
saying the same thing again and again in different ways. And people
are again and again surprised and fascinated. Not a lot can do that.

How brilliant that wonderful songwriting ability is, Bowie is so clever to be able to write songs that fit into any decade and still refer to trends in life.

I thought that was going to be the case when I first ventured into hearing it, I actually don't mind their version surprisingly enough, I think it's because of Robert Smith's trademark squealing, It actually suits the song very much, but I could live without it

in that other recent interview on the BBC jazz program, he sounded different, in a way a bit shyer - not like that over-the-top attitude when he was interviewing for that art magazine!!! lol

i think it's interesting cos of the talk about costumes etc... i mean it was obviously short, maybe just emailed questions and he chose some?

Yes he did and what's more he even mentioned he was writing for his next album the Jazz radio interview was much more respectable and interesting, as for that lousy Fashion Rocks talking about lounging around in the Catskills mountains and wearing Dior clothes, that is not the Bowie I've come to know over 30 years.
