SERIOUS MOONLIGHT DVD DETAILS AND DOWNLOADS

And about time too!

Great cover.

Details following...

Don't be afraid of the man in the serious moonlight...

We are very happy to be able to exclusively reveal details of the official EMI David Bowie - Serious Moonlight DVD (ICPN: 094634153997, cover above), that we first mentioned back in August. (08.04.2005 NEWS: SERIOUS MOONLIGHT OZ DVD, PLUS EMI VERSION DUE)

Due on March 13th 2006, Serious Moonlight is the official film of the 1983 tour recorded at Pacific National Exhibition Coliseum, Vancouver, Cananda, in September 1983, captured brilliantly by director David Mallet.

Also included is the Ricochet documentary, presented here in an extended version (at approximately 78 minutes) as a DVD extra. Ricochet allows the audience a rare and fascinating behind the scenes portrait of David Bowie, filmed entirely on location during his 1983 Serious Moonlight World Tour against the colourful backgrounds of Singapore, Bangkok and Hong Kong.

Here's the full tracklisting of the concert segment of the DVD:

01 Introduction
02 Look Back In Anger
03 "Heroes"
04 What In The World
05 Golden Years
06 Fashion
07 Let’s Dance
08 Breaking Glass
09 Life On Mars?
10 Sorrow
11 Cat People (Putting Out Fire)
12 China Girl
13 Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps)
14 Rebel Rebel
15 White Light, White Heat
16 Station To Station
17 Cracked Actor
18 Ashes To Ashes
19 Space Oddity
20 Young Americans
21 Fame/End Credits

...and here's the technical stuff:

Screen: 4:3

Disc Type: DVD-9
Running Time (approx): 173 minutes (TBC)
No. of Discs: 1
Subtitles:-
PAL: English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese
NTSC: English, Spanish and Portuguese

Space Oddity
China Girl
Breaking Glass
Young Americans

A live clip of Space Oddity from the DVD will be made available as a digital download (ICPN: 00946-349736-5-6) on the same day.

I'm happy hope you're happy too.

Great news eh Alan? I knew they ( EMI ) said they were going to officially release it after that dreadful Australian cheapo version, now we have to wait until March 13th, let's just hope the number 13 isn't an omen for this to be put back to next winter.

Notice too how we have the 5.1 stereo mix as an option

According to my old VHS tapes Fame was the closing song and until you now mentioned it! I hadn't noticed the absence of Modern Love, but that wasn't even on the VHS tapes either, most odd

There missing the half hour encore, it's listed in TW's 83 tour section.

Does the extended Riccochet include completely unseen 45 minutes?

I missed that about the extended Richchet. Hopefully it will include more of the concert. What would be nice is if they use songs which are not part of the main feature. This release is looking better and better. Let's hope it comes out on time.

I've got all the other LD era materials, but that one proved elusive.

Nive touch with the EP being released the day before Valentine's Day.

I got it on Video for the first time this year. Excellent version of Look back in Anger, much better than the one on the main video. It never appealed to me at the time and isn't something you would repeatedly play. Nice to have at last on dvd though, especially as an extra.

Having finally heard this wonderful new EP, I can express my thoughts, for what their worth.

"Space Oddity" sounds breathtaking in it's beauty and the remastering is superb, Lord even "China Girl" sounds fresh, "Young Americans" I am in LOve with this track and he definitely says FRIDGE!

"Breaking Glass" is a tad ploddy, but nice none the less.

There are many tracks from this concert I would have picked rather than Breaking glass. I love the song but never paricularly liked the SM version of it. I would have chose either Heroes (with the brilliant lavender blue intro) or the great rendition of White light white heat.

Don't be so fatalistic, there has been no promotion for these tracks outside of the Bowie sites, so how is the world going to know? Besides that, this is not a release that is going to appeal to most people as it is tracks they will be able to get on the dvd in a month anyway and at that point they'll be able to rip the audio.

I was under the impression that only the box edition of all three was limited (then again, that's still available too...).

These limited editions also work the other way around, sometimes: in 2003 John Foxx's Crash And Burn was released on vinyl with only 1000 copies made... yet it was not a limited edition, despite the fact there were far less copies made then are for many limited edition releases (OK, the real reason is that there probably aren't much more than a thousand people to buy Foxx's album on vinyl... it's still available, matter of fact).

Well, I'm keeping my Rajon DVD and not buying any more of EMI's filthy money scamming crud.

If EMI were serving the fans, we'd at least be getting Glass Spider. But no, we get Serious Moonlight. Again. And why? It's because some elcheapo outback Aussie label with next to no resources beat EMI to punch about six months ago.

Then EMI (which is sitting on something like 400 hours of Bowie footage) decides to throw the dogs a bone and tack on Richochet so they'll buy this release instead.

I sincerely hope that Rajon taught the stingy corporate cunts at EMI a lesson.

But somehow I doubt it.

Re: SERIOUS MOONLIGHT DVD DETAILS AND DOWNLOADS new [re: Pablo-Picasso]

That wasn't Rajon's fault. They could only work with what they had which was old tapes - not the massive archives that fat EMI businessmen continue to warm their buttocks on.

You only get your 'real deal' now because EMI are reacting to that release. It shouldn't have to come to that.

Re: SERIOUS MOONLIGHT DVD DETAILS AND DOWNLOADS new [re: Adam]

This release was planned as far back as Best of Bowie, extremely delayed but planned nevertheless.
Rajon's release was at best semi legit, thus having to use old tapes. There is something new on this new release at least.

I think you will find it is more Bowie's buttocks that are warming on this archive stuff. There is no financial gain for EMI in keeping this stuff unavailable. I would say the longer it is kept from release the less revenue it will attract, Bowie might have a hard core following but as far as the general public are concerned he might just as well be dead these days. A Best of cd or DVD might get him back in the charts but I doubt very much a Cracked Actor or Earls Court 78 dvd would cause them much excitement.

I'm very pleased for you Ardent

About the sound quality, does that promo have the 5.1 dts mix? the sound on the "Serious Moonlight" EP is very good IMO, much improved stereo and clearer.

About the picture quality, has it been transferred to 16.9, or is it 4.3? only I know how things can change from what's advertized.

FAB item and I'm very envious

As mentioned copious times before, it could only be transfered to 16:9 if the image was cropped, so it isn't going to be widescreen.

Yes I know it's been mentioned before, but you know how things can change, I still think it would have been better to crop this and make it 16.9, I doubt there are many fans with 4.3 televisions now, If they can make the sound better, then they can the picture, what harm does a little crop do.

I have a 4:3 screen but on my DVD player, I can pan and zoom to deal with widescreen releases. Perhaps in the reverse situation, you could try cropping the bottom of the screen. This should work for all the distance shots but you'll have to see for the face close ups.

My 16.9 television has the capability of a stretch mode, I use it when viewing old pre 16.9 television programmes, It looks good, sometimes it has that goldfish bowl effect on close ups, I use that mode when viewing "Love You Till Tuesday" and you'd never know the difference.

RE: your version of the "Serious Moonlight Tour" on Rajon? this new dvd has extra footage and the "Richochet" documentary, plus the 5.1 dts sound, so it might be worth keeping a look out for it when it's on sale price.

Look what I've won! new [re: russellmael]

You know I had, A great big hat...

But first, you probably want to know the names of the ten winners of our last competition to win signed-by-David Bowie copies of the Serious Moonlight promotional print, the design of which is based on the cover of the DVD. (02.24.2006 NEWS: SM EP IN I-TUNES TOP 20...WIN SIGNED SM POSTER)

We asked for ten live tracks that were released on either the A or B side of David Bowie's 7" releases over the years. We did specifically ask for David Bowie recordings, but being the reasonable sorts that we are, we did accept Tin Machine titles too.

Anyway, the great majority of you seemed to find ten or more songs with ease, but here are the BowieNetters that The Random Generator shined favourably upon:

hartgelach
marcbolan

Congratulations Ant on your stunning prize!

I watched the new DVD last night. I hadn't watched even the VHS in a good long while, and found this concert surprisingly entertaining! The fact that you can distinctly see Bowie's face now with no grainy picture helps you get past the "hair-do".

Its quite amusing how the crowd goes wild whenever a track from Let's Dance is played, showing that its probably the only Bowie album they've ever heard.

Some great performances - the choreography during 'Cracked Actor' is great and 'Fame' and 'Scary Monsters' rock. Hopefully i'll watch the Ricochet documentary tonight which i've never even seen before.

In reply to:

I'm going to watch the concert tonight and Ricochet etc... over the weekend, I haven't even popped it into my player yet, keeping it a treat for tonight,

I couldn't resist a little taster of it...I got home quite late so couldnt watch the whole thing. Tonight I too will sit and watch it in it's entirity. It'll be a double whammy weekend. I also bought a copy of Stage (DVD-Audio) on Ebay. maybe I should do things chronologically. What a treat.

In reply to:

It would also have made a great double cd album, had they bothered.

yes it would have, but then you can easily make your own CD copy of it I keep meaning to do that with the reality DVD too.

What a treat watching the concert the 5.1 dts sound is amazing and picture quality much improved on vhs tape, the on screen menu is FAB! Lord this brought back plenty of memories, It knocks spots off the Reality tour dvd imo.

Excellent, I bought them both when they came out, you wait until you hear "STATIONTOSTATION" played live in 5.1 audio, It sounds like a train going through your living room

i haven't got a 5.1 system yet, just stereo. so guess i have dolby 2.0 still will probably sound better than the CD.

You'll be able to see on screen gallery etc... plus it will sound better of course and it's all on one disc, so no having to change midway

I'm glad this is in a DVD case and not some cardboard origami construction like most of the last 5 years of releases.

Yes I like the plastic case, those card monstrosities tear/wear so easily, my only disappointment being of the poor booklet ( for want of a better word ) inside the casing.

I found it, I had to check in the warehouse though, not the main shop. So I just ordered it for £5.55.

Yeah I remember you sending off for that voucher I believe? the reason I questioned what you bought, was because we were also discussing Bowie DVD-As whilst you were away.

Good price for you, got long to wait for it?

Re: It's arrived! new [re: russellmael]

I love all the special packaging but only if I buy two copies to keep one in pristine nick.

The booklets in Bowie DVDs have often been a let down. Would could have been nice is if EMI released a LTD EDT of SM in special packaging along with a re-print of the book fromt he tour that came out on hard back in 1984. That book along with the DVD packaged together would have been very nice. And for those who just wanted the DVD release it in standard fromat as has been done.

I've said for many years now that more fan input from Bowie followers would go along way to improving the final product. Queen have done a good job at this as have T-Rex fans :)

Re: It's arrived! new [re: Diamond_Dave]

it's funny seeing in some shops here in London the earlier pirate version on the shelves next to the official new one. Both for the same price. I will say to EMI well done for resisting the temptation to put it out at full price.

I have that book, my late father bought it for me, so it's doubly special, only here in the UK it wasn't relesed in hardback, It came out with a soft card cover.

Tell the council you're muslim and the neighbours keep posting sausages in the form of disabled people through your letterbox and they'll have you a stairlift fitted within 24 hours - probably gold-plated.

A truly great concert, It brought back so many memories, this was after all the first ever Live Bowie concert issued on commercial VHS tapes.

The 5.1 dts mix is breathtaking ( haven't a clue who mixed that ) was it Visconti? I can't remember now.

I also viewed "Ricohet" for the first time ( never ever bought the tape ) found it fascinating, would have liked some different live tracks performed on that documentary, great insight in the tour.

I do believe that the SM videos came out in 1984 but at the end of 1983 the ZSTMP came out, so close, but not quite.

I just wish that they could have added some of the tracks which were not released first time around.

Drat! I'd completely forgotten that, well the first concert on VHS tape that would appeal to all maybe?

The one I won measures 42 x 30 cm, or 16.5 x 11&3 quarter inches ( which ever is easiest ) So it's a really nice size for framing.
