Apart from your cheap, gay Turkish excursions, do you ever venture outside Norwich?

Re: Upcoming Thin White Duke tribute band gigs new [re: Nature_Boy]

I can't wait to see The Thin White Duke....it was Scott and his band that gave me the inspiration to get my bowie tribute together.

I think you're right, jealousy is a part of it. If The Thin White Duke are anything like The Bowie Contingent are, then it's a great hobby that allows us to play songs we love and share some great music with others. I'm in a tribute band because i love the music we play....i'd love it even if we never played any gigs. The fact that people come along, have a great night out and often feel inspired to go out and buy some Bowie records is purely a bonus.

Good on you Scott....don't let criticism get you down....i bet even those on here that poo poo bowie tributes would be having a beer, singing along and enjoy themselves if they got off their arses, left their pc's for a few hours and went along to a gig.

Besides....i;ve learnt that advertising gigs on here doesn't really pull in many punters anyway. Local advertising to more casual Bowie fans seems more productive. Saying that...the BowieNet piece seemed to help a great deal with Bowiefest, what with folks coming from all over the UK to attend. Any members of BowieNet see anything written up about it on their forums? Things went a little weird technically and i'd hate to think it got bad reviews :(

Ok... maybe I should've clarified. Yes, it is a good thing to do and I respect the combination of enthusiasm and self belief. When I started out doing music I liked to do covers.

But I was laughing at the MP3 on their site. And, as a casual punter, I am allowed to comment.

Tribute bands new [re: icarusboy]

Tribute bands are the lowest of the low, musically.

I mean, I'm against covers bands also but at least they diversify somewhat.

Really- what is there creative in a tribute band? You are just leeching of the popularity of someone with real talent.

You really should give Bowie some of the no-doubt dozens of pounds that you make. If it wasn't for him, you'd just be singing karaoke... which you sort of are anyway.

What kind of idiot would go to a gig and say 'Wow, it's just like Bowie! Except he's ugly. And kinda fat. And useless. This is much better than listening to a proper Bowie album for free!'

I'd be much happier with myself as a person being in the worst band ever (and I've been in a few that come close) than the greatest tribute act.

I'm not criticising you guys for doing what you love, I'm just saying that I find what you love to be pathetic and repulsive.

And, yes, this post is made completely out of jealousy

Yeah, but you get to dress in Ziggy make-up and meet other people who, as fate would have it, have also turned up dressed as Ziggy.

And then you partake in the communal ecstasy as NatureBoy screams 'Gimme your hands, you're wonderful!' then all the half dozen or so present link arms and circle dance and laugh elvishly at each others' mullets.

You don't get that sat at home, listening to yer 'free' album.

Re: Tribute bands new [re: EmpireStateHuman]

Okay, as far as the MP3 goes on our site, even i find it cringe worthy nowadays (it was made very early on in the band's formation and we have all improved, although still not perfect), so i am at least glad the opinion is formulated on that and not from having seen us live.

As for credibility, i have penned over 50 of my own songs and although i have performed them in the past, i get much more out of composing than performing my own stuff.

And should i give Bowie a cut of tribute band earnings? i have spent way, way more on Bowie merchandise than i'll ever make with the band, so Bowie's still quids in.

I'd be interested to hear a new sample MP3 in that case.

I think tribute bands do have worth.
