Hallo Spaceboy on Pet Shop Boy's "Disco 4"

This is of only neglible interest to Bowie fans as the inportant track is already available on the two-disc reissue of 1. Outside, but never the less:

Pet Shop Boys release “Disco 4”, the fourth album in a continuing series, on Parlophone on September 24th. The album is available on CD and vinyl.

“Disco 4” collects together Pet Shop Boys’ extended dance mixes of The Killers, Madonna, Yoko Ono, Rammstein, Atomizer and David Bowie, as well as a new extended mix of PSB live highlight “Integral” and their maxi-mix of the single “I’m With Stupid”.

In this respect “Disco 4” differs from the concept of previous Disco albums, which were primarily remixes of Pet Shop Boys’ tracks by other artists and DJ’s. The series was launched with “Disco” in 1986; “Disco 2” and “Disco 3” followed in 1994 and 2003 respectively.

(the above from petshopboys.co.uk)

1. The Killers: Read My Mind (PSB Stars Are Blazing mix)
2. David Bowie with Pet Shop Boys: Hallo Spaceboy (PSB Extended mix)
3. Pet Shop Boys: Integral (PSB Perfect Immaculate mix)
4. Yoko Ono: Walking On Thin Ice (PSB Electro mix)
5. Madonna: Sorry (PSB Maxi-mix)
6. Atomizer: Hooked On Radiation (PSB Orange Alert mix)
7. Rammstein: Mein Teil (PSB There Are No Guitars On This mix)
8. Pet Shop Boys: I'm with Stupid (PSB Maxi-mix)

If the other tracks are half as good as their sublime Hallo Spaceboy remix, then this is a worthwhile release.

This is good news. But what happened to 'Blurs' Girls & Boys PSB remix?

Looks like Damian Albarn got his own way and had it banned

Damon, not Damian, Anthony. new [re: Quills]

There are probably lots and lots of PSB remixes not included on the disc... although remembering the song's popularity, Girls & Boys is a pretty major omission.

I guess it's a little too blatantly in yer face for inclusion?

Also, I'd guess the CD runs to maximum capacity and they had to leave it off.

Apparently, so rumour goes... Albarn heard their version 'Blurs' Girls & Boys and thought it sounded better than his original. So wouldn't let them (PSB) include it.

Sour grapes?

I dont think the first Disco album they did will ever be improved on.

Im still shocked after just reading that Neil Tennant snorted Cocaine backstage with Brett Anderson.

LOL, really? He always came across like a major deviant to me, but then I know a lot of Geordies (most of them deviants).

If that's the one with the Arthur Baker mix of in the night on it then i'm sure You're right as there is very little out there that beats that track.

The only psb I own is the ancient discography compilation, a second hand copy of the rubber-covered Very plus a few additional tracks like the one mentioned above. However, when I saw them live the other week that was pretty much all they played anyway!

Cracking show, though.

Although the setlist was pruned back for the V festival, the current live shows by the Pet Shop Boys are indeed awesome - and probably the best individual concert I've seen since Bowie in '04.

This has been bothing me for ages, and as I finally got my hands on all the relevant tracks, I've got to ressurrect this thread and reply to the following:

In reply to:

From what I read on the liner ntoes of the two-disc reissue of Very (admittedly not the most reliable source), Albarn thought the remix made the song sound like a Pet Shop Boys track. The main reason however why the remix wasn't on Disco 4 is that the two-disc reissue of Very includes PSB's own live version of "Girls and Boys", which is practically identical to the 7" Remix. Although Tennant's vocals don't really fit the song at all.

Personally I'd argue the PSB remix in this case isn't that good. The 7" remix in particular manages to turn a beautiful multi-layered song into a dull, flat piece dominated by an overpowering and unwavering techno beat - there's no separation between the verse and chorus, which makes the remix sound very dull. Admittedly this was a problem with PSB's single remixes of their own tracks at the time as well. Then again, PSB's 12" remix of "Girls and Boys" is excellent and would have made a worthy addition on Disco 4. Although my PSB-fan friend who actually bought the compilation says that apart from the "Hallo Spaceboy" remix it isn't much good anyway.

Also, "In The Night" is indeed brilliant, at least in the original version. Although my favourite early PSB track is "A Man Could Get Arrested".
